>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this tuesday december 13th. here's what's happening. >> two people are shot in a south jersey community. police find one of the victims dead on a front porch. >> bill cosby is due back in a montgomery county courthouse today for pretrial hearing for his sex assault case. >> and a secret santa surprises families in delaware county paying for their children's christmas gifts. >> nice story. but first up let's talk about your accuweather. dave murphy has that. karen rogers is off. matt pelman is looking at traffic. good morning. >> we're starting out with some clouds across the region. there might be a couple of early sunny breaks. in general we expect the clouds to get thicker today and by this evening there could be a little rain shower, maybe even a snow shower in the northern suburbs. cold this morning, 36 degrees in philadelphia. below freezing in allentown. and similar numbers in reading
and lancaster and down in millville. 34-degree readings in wilmington, trenton really not much different there and 40 down in cape may. winds not all that much of a factor this morning only running at about 7 miles per hour in philadelphia. and across most of the day and most of the region we're probably staying in the single digits whip winds. so not a particularly windy day ahead. it will be chilly though. 33 degrees by 7 o'clock. some of you seeing some early sunshine. by noon, 40 been 3 o'clock, that's your high, 43 degrees today. right around average for this time of year but chilly certainly and then by 5 o'clock 40 degrees been 7 o'clock we're back down into the upper 30's and dipping down close to freezing for an overnight low. big story this week wednesday night into thursday matt when we are looking at an arctic snap coming in. details on just how low the temps go coming up. >> low temperatures and low speeds believe it or not already this morning david on the schuylkill expressway and this is time it's thanks to overnight construction going on here in both directions. it's overhead sign work between montgomery drive and
the boulevard. they've been stopping all traffic from time to time overnight. right now the two right lanes are getting by on the westbound side. and traffic gets by on the shoulder on the eastbound side. as you can imagine, yeah, this is causing big delays and low speeds already just 4 miles per hour as you come east on the schuylkill away from city avenue. already this morning i'm saying use the kelly drive instead of the schuylkill expressway or even lancaster avenue. inbound mlk drive has been blocked for overnight construction but that should be reopening momentarily. this is also in the process of reopening. vine street expressway westbound is opened. eastbound we're still waiting on the ramp from the eastbound schuylkill to the eastbound vine but that should be back in business momentarily. and here on 95 southbound at academy overnight construction is gone so looking better in the great northeast. in delaware, there's still some work on 95 northbound near the delaware service area. right lane out there for the next half hour on this tuesday morning tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. this is happening today. bill cosby is due back in
montgomery county courthouse today. his lawyers are fighting to limit the number of accusers who can testify at his sexual assault trial. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live now outside that courthouse in norristown. she's going run down the details. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam, that's right, bill cosby is expected back here today for another pretrial hearing. this one focuses on whether the prosecution can call 13 other accusers to testify at trial. this is a big issue for both sides and we expect a battle. this trial scheduled for the spring is for charge that is bill cosby sexually assaulted former temple university employee andrea constand at his cheltenham home in 2004. prosecutors want to call 13 other women to testify in an effort to show cosby had a pattern of drugging and molesting women from the 70's to the 90's. some of the women are set to have only known him for a few days. others had ongoing relationships with cosby. district attorney kevin steele
argues the 13 women's stories are reel advance because they establish a common scheme or plan. but the defense is crying foul saying the commonwealth is trying to bolster their weak case. cosby's lawyers will try keep the women off the witness stand attack the relevance to the case and their credibility. the defense had wanted to question the women in person but the judge didn't allow it. the judge already ruled cosby's deposition testimony can be used at trial where he talks about his affairs including the night with constand and giving quaaludes to women he wanted to have sex with. now the question remains, if these accusers can testify. his hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. it's expected to last today and tomorrow. we're live in norristown, katherine scott, channel6 "action news. >> thanks, katherine. new this morning, a plan with -- man with a knife held up a 7-eleven. the robber threatened the clerk with a weapon and stole an unknown amount of cash
fleeing the scene on foot. no injuries were reported. >> it is now 5:04 and two men came under attack while sitting in a car in the city's olney section. you can see the shattered window shot out along the 5900 block of north third street. police say someone opened fire around 5:15 yesterday evening. the men were taken to the hospital in stable condition. investigators are trying to figure out who shot the men and why. around the same time in the city's hunting park section a gunman shot a 21-year-old man. this shooting happened along the 3900 block of north eighth street. the victim wall shot in the chest and the leg is that now in critical condition. >> a burst of gunfire in south jersey left a victim dead on the front porch of a home and sent another to the hospital. chopper6 was over the unit block of plumtree lane in willingboro as police investigated the scene. police and medics responded to a report of shots fired at the residence at 8 o'clock last night. the wounded victim was transported to our lady of lourdes hospital. that person's condition has
not been released. at least one person was seriously injured in a head-on crash in chadds ford delaware county. chopper6 was over this scene along route one just west of the route 202 interchange t a car and an suv collided at 7:00 last night. one person had to be airlifted to an area hospital for care. >> a secret santa is spread something christmas cheer in delaware county. vanessa says she went to pay off the last of her lay a way items at a k-mart ridley township but an employee told her someone had already done that, that they had paid offer the $300 balance. >> i just never thought anybody would do something like that for me. i just want to thank that person 'cause they don't get thanked. >> but you know what it seems like that's part of the deal, store employees say for the past several years a man has paid off lay a way accounts nearing their payment deadline em specifically asks to pay off those with toys and other christmas presents but employees say he wants to remain anonymous. >> snow sleet and freezing rain made for a dangerous commute in more than a dozen
state. at least two people died in separate accidents in maine including a father who was riding in an suv that many collided way dump truck. several crashes took place in lackawanna county pa including four vehicles that collide on interstate 81 just outside of scranton. >> well, now time to turn to dave murphy and keep talking about cold weather including that cold shot coming our way. >> yeah, you're looking at those snowy accidents. we could see a little bit of that friday night saturday morning, too. storm tracker6 live double scan for now shows you we're dry for this morning's commute. we have sky6 looking south on broad street from our temple university camera. clouds are starting to get thicker and win out overall today. 36 in philadelphia, 34 in wilmington and trenton below freezing in allentown lancaster and millville and still at about 40 in cape may. winds are fairly light this morning. there you see the clouds gathering in the overnight hours. we might see some sunny breaks in the first part of the day but generally speaking we're looking at those clouds getting thicker as we roll through it.
lehigh valley's forecast increasing clouds and chilly today. down right cold in fact with a high of just 39 degrees. not a lot of gained so that's good. at the shore clouds increasing, cool, 46 degrees next to that ocean water and in philadelphia a high of 43 this afternoon, clouds on the march as we go through the morning and afternoon. chilly obviously and winds staying light out of the southwest at about 48 miles per hour. at 5 o'clock we're fairly cloudy and well north and west of the poconos there's the chance of some snow showers so if you're planning on going up into northeastern pennsylvania look out for snow later today into the afternoon. and then later on in the evening hours we're going to see some showers build in around philadelphia and some snow showers respect possible up in allentown, maybe down by reading and up in the poconos. these don't look like they're going to amount to very much but if you're out later tonight driving around you might want to slow it down in those northern areas. then overnight mostly cloudy. that evening shower gets out of here after about midnight or so and the overnight low is 33 degrees so tomorrow morning it will be cold and the winds are going to start to pick up a little bit overnight
tonight. then on wednesday a high of 42 degrees but all eyes will be on this frontal boundary which is an arctic front and behind it very cold air so 42 on wednesday. one more day to be able to go out and get things done relatively comfortable conditions but then behind that system look out. we've got a cold crush with an area of low pressure moving down over quebec. we're going get strong winds wrapping around low and we're going to see high temperatures on thursday and friday in the mid-20's but on thursday in particular the wind chills making it feel like it's between zero in the morning and about 10 degrees in philadelphia in the afternoon and a little worse below zero wind chills at times in the northern suburbs. your seven-day from accuweather increasing clouds today, 43. again today is the day to get stuff done if you still got it to get done. tomorrow you can still do some stuff, too, from degrees, clouds and sun but in the afternoon and especially the evening the temperatures are going to plunge. it's a frigid night and we've got the chance of a little snow shower popping through wednesday night. then on thursday, bitter wind, clouds and sun, 24 is the high.
it will feel like again down around zero in the morning, 10 in the afternoon. can't rule out a passing snow shower. the next issue of course we get a high of 23 on friday, that's not great. the next issue is friday night into saturday where we are expecting some snow eventually mixing with some ice and then we expect all of that to change over to rain on saturday afternoon. but saturday morning could be a dicey period around here with a high of 42 later. getting better it. >> thank you david. >> yeah. >> 5:10 and new on "action news" officials ban a ritual of making rookies dress up as women. >> don't be too. a homeowner takes a second look at his surveillance footage and realizes it was an elderly woman who was stealing his christmas packages. matt. >> we're taking a look at the schuylkill matt and overnight construction is still stealing your time. we're parked other eastbound side already this morning. we'll look at that construction zone by that montgomery drive and talk about a new closure in montgomery township when "action news" continues on this tuesday morning. >> ♪
>> ♪ >> 5:13. good morning everyone. taking a look at the rothman river rink at dillworth park. 36 degrees on city avenue getting up to the 40's today and then the cold sweater going to start moving in later in the week. >> let's find out what things are looking like in terms of your commute and go on over to matt pelman. good morning. >> so weather-wise definitely looking better than yesterday morning. it's dry out there. so you might think oh, this is going to be a breeze. well, you'd be wrong because of overnight construction unfortunately and usually overnight construction has at least a little bit of an impact. this project is having a major imimpact on the traffic this morning. it's along the schuylkill expressway between the roosevelt boulevard and montgomery drive. it's been overhead sign work that they've been doing overnight and at this point you've got the two right lanes
get buying on the westbound side of the schuylkill expressway. on the eastbound side it's just the shoulder that's topped traffic head toward montgomery drive and toward center city. so, eastbound you're seeing a pretty substantial delay coming away from city avenue. i would still really recommend heading for the river drivers, the mlk or the kelly. schuylkill is really a mess in both directions here close to montgomery drive. we'll keep watching that. for now let's get suburban on this tuesday morning. new project begins this morning and for 10 months here in montgomery township we're going to be without limekiln pike all part of the county line road reconstruction project. county line, lower state is your alternate again for the next 10 months. so that's not great news but this is better news. on sunday morning we have the new e. ez pass on-ramp to the northeast extension southbound. use that. right now there's no extra overnight construction going on on the nex. but on the east west turnpike at the connector bridge watch out for construction taking out the left lane until six:00
and in westville brooklawn work going on on 47 northbound and 130 northbound. 47 is completely blocked at this point. tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. new this morning, search crews in nevada have found the body of a plan who was buried in anarch launch. the 64 yield man was on a closed ski run in reno saturday morning when the avalanche hit a friend he was skiing with at the time survived. ski patrol officials say the death could have been prevented if the skiers had awarded the closed one. >> new on "action news" the granny who stole christmas. that is what a missouri homeowner is calling the woman whom swiped packages off his front porch. the homeowner says surveillance cameras caught a black hummer passing this drive way four times in less than five minutes in oakville back on wednesday of last week. then you see what looks like an elderly woman walking up to the house and taking three packages. >> this time of year it's really known for this type of stuff, you know, criminals know that that packages are being delivered to people's houses for christmas.
>> the homeowner says he is thankful to have the surveillance video to help police catch the granny. >> new on "action news" a baseball hazing ritual dressing up rookies as women is banned. major league baseball created an anti-hazing and anti-bullying policy that covers this practice part avenue new labor deal set to be ratified tomorrow. the policy prohibits "requiring coercing or encouraging players dressing up as women or wearing costumes that may be offensive. the players union agreed not to contest this. >> villanova wildcats host templeton night at the pavilion. november are a have a remains number one in the latest college basketball poll. the owls are 713. john dorenbos underwent surgery for wrist injury. offensive tackle matt tobin and running back wendell small wood were added to the injured reserve list yesterday. both have knee injuries. the five and eight eagles face the baltimore ravens on sunday just three games remain in the season. the flyers hard work is being noticed.
