policy agenda. first russia. tensions building for years over ukraine, syria, and now the latest sanctions by the obama administration. retaliation for russia's election cyber attacks. trump's positions on russia have drawn criticism from democrats and republicans. >> do you honestly believe that hillary would be tougher on putin than me? >> reporter: the trump administration will be under considerable pressure to contain the spread of isis abroad, and limit the threat it poses in the u.s. on the trail trump said this will be his first order to his top generals. >> they will have 30 days to submit to the oval office a plan for soundly and quickly defeating isis. >> reporter: other burning issues, the refugee crisis in the middle east and europe. ongoing challenges in afghanistan. china's aggression in its own neighborhood, and international efforts to fight climate change. and on all of these areas trump will soon be briefed by

welcome back. 2017 may end up holding a few financial surprises for all of us. and joining us now for a look at what will cost more and what will cost us less, let's hope for more less than more in 2017. our personal finance expert, vera gibens. hopefully it was an inexpensive new year. it sounds like a lot will be costing more. >> let's start with gas. gas prices expected to be the highest in three years. gas projecting prices are going to be $0.36 higher that year than last year.
$2.49 a gallon. costing $52 billion more this year than last year. in some of the cities like new york, chicago chicago, seattle, you're talking $3 a gallon gas. big sticker shock for individuals. on the flip side, airfares are projected to be flat to down because of the competition between the legacy and budget carriers. some relief there. you're really going to feel the pain at the pump. if you're flying domestically, internationally, not so bad. credit card debt will cost more. >> that's going to be expensive in 2017. one interest rate hike in december. we're expecting three more. your variable rate debt is going to get expensive in 2017 if you carry a balance on your credit card. every quarter point hike cost you an extra $25 a year for every 1$,000 in credit card debt. considering the average family has over $16,000 in credit card debt, you see it's going to be very expensive.
>> we expect a few more hikes this year. >> three more. and when interest rates go up, you really see it almost immediately on the credit card. so that's one thing to look out for. on the flip side, annual fees have been following according to analysis, they're down five consecutive quarters because everyone is trying to get you to sign up. they're offering bonus points. >> and it's interesting you mention that that it goes up immediately with credit cards. with homes and home mortgages, it takes longer. >> here's the deal with home prices. home prices are projected to raise about 4% according to zillow. mortgage rates are at 4 %. projected to go to 5%. and every one percent change reduces affordability by about 10%. it's expensive if you're looking to buy a home. on the flip side, rent, while they've been rising are only projected to rise 1.4%.
it's going to be some relief in sight if you're in a current unit you may not see any hike in your rent. if you're looking for a new place, you may actually have some wiggle room on price and negotiations. things like that. >> that $3800 stud know apartment in new york. >> people are shelling out 50% of their income for rent in new york. >> i know. >> that's too much. >> plus the fees you pay initially. you say certain grocery staples. >> certain ones are going up. you're looking at fresh fruits, poultry, orange juice, olive oil sweets. overall groceries are expected to go up as much as 2 .5%. some items going down, avocado. beef, pork going down. eggs declining a little bit in terms of price. peanut butter coming down a little bit. depends on what you're shopping

>> and a hearing for treasury secretary. he's expected to defend his record during the housing crisis after people who lost their hopes to foreclosures were on capitol hill yesterday asking democrats to reject his nomination. and the president-elect's choice to run the environmental protection agency told senators he doesn't believe climate change is a hoax. which is what trump has called it in the past. as oklahoma attorney general, though, scott pruitt has sued the epa 14 times. he refused to say if he could recuse himself from the ongoing cases if confirmed as head of the agency. trump's health agency was pounded over plans to replace obama care as well as his stock trades. >> reporter: on capitol hill a crush of confirmation hearings. massive lines of people waiting to hear from some of donald trump's most controversial nominees like tom price. his pick to lead the department of health and human services.

event earlier saying how honored he was to introduce donald trump. organizers put the finishing touches for inauguration day, more lawmakers joined the boycott. 60 house democrats say they will not be there tomorrow to see donald trump sworn in as the country's 45 th president. for some trump's attack on john lewis was the last draw. many don't want to normalize his divisive rhetoric. george h.w. bush and his wife are undergoing treatment at a hospital. he's in the intensive care unit after a procedure to relieve breathing problems stemming from pneumon pneumonia. as a precaution doctors decided to admit mrs. bush. she's in another wing of the same hospital. he was feeling sick the last few weeks from fatigue and coughing. >> over the course of their 72 years, i don't think they've ever been at the hospital at the same time. they've both had tremendous

tough prison sentence. due process was carried out that she took responsibility for her crime, that the sentence that she received was very disproportionate relative to what other leakers had received. i feel very comfortable that justice has been served. >> meanwhile wikileaks founder has retreated from his pledge to accept extradition to the united states. if manning was granted clemency. lawyers for him say what he was really asking for was an immediate pardon. critics are using the manning case for just publicity. >> more rains expected. emergency crews made dozens of high water rescues as thousands of motorists were stranded on roadways. massive flooding shut down much

from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to everyone. we're going to start the half hour with the new concerns about the health of george h.w. bush and his wife barbara. the former first couple both in a houston hospital this morning. >> mr. bush is in intensive care after a procedure to clear a respiratory blockage. and mrs. bush was admitted as a precaution because she hasn't been feeling well. the former president and his wife hospitalized at this houston hospital. bush's office saying he was admitted saturday for shortness of breath and was expected home soon. a spokesperson saying he was in intensive care from an acute respiratory problem. doctors sedated him to perform a procedure to protect and clear his hirway.
