electronic devices when flying from ten international airports. >> it went into effect overnight. the official word expected from homeland security later on this morning. passengers coming from the u.s. from mostly middle eastern country can no longer carry on devices larger than a cell phone. this morning, new air travel restrictions going into effect. the department of homeland security overnight issuing an emergency directive for passengers flying from ten middle eastern and african airports, any electronic that's not a medical device or larger than a cell phone now banned from the main cabin of flights coming from certain countries including tablets and laptop computers. >> i think that's a little much. >> reporter: the countries impacted include jordan, egypt, and united arab emirates, an origin of several daily flights into the united states.

a terrorism official says it was probably driven by intelligence of a possible attack. >> what is likely happened, the u.s. government has developed some intelligence that a group or individual has developed some type of device they can get on to an airplane using a laptop or some other electronic appliance. >> they have been used before by terrorists as recently as year. this whole blown through a laptop in somalia. the pilot managing to land and the alleged bomber the only death. aviation experts said if the bomb went off at cruising altitude the plane would almost certainly have been destroyed. and the ban does not affect any u.s. carriers. ray government tells abc news this has been considered for several weeks now. >> lawmakers were apparently briefed about it over the weekend. the white house is not backing down this morning after the head of the fbi testified on capitol hill debunking president

pr president trump's claim that he was wiretapped. >> james comey said an investigation is under way under the trump campaign's possible ties to russia. to so far no reaction from president trump himself. here's abc's janai norman with the latest. >> reporter: the president rallied in kentucky. >> we will make america great again. >> reporter: unfazed by the high drama on capitol hill. >> the fbi as part of our counterintelligence mission is investigating the riggs government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. >> reporter: the testimony from fbi corredirector james comey offering two black eyes first revealing an ongoing investigation now in its seventh month. >> that includes investigating the nature of any links between the individuals associated with the trump campaign and the russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and russia's efforts.

>> reporter: and then publicly undercutting the president refuting trump's tweet, quote, obama has wiretaps in trump tower. >> director comey, was the present statement obama had his wired tapped true? >> we have no evidence to support that. >> reporter: the president fired back. >> investigating it and having proof of it are two different things. >> reporter: then distanced itself from former trump campaign associates caught up in the investigation including paul manafort. >> paul manafort. >> manafort. >> who served as trump's campaign chairman. >> and then obviously there's been discussion of paul manafort who played a very limited role for a limit amount of time. >> he was the chairman -- >> jonathan -- >> reporter: fbi director comey says the russians were unusually loud about their intervention almost as if they didn't care the u.s. knew what they were doing. he says he believes they'll be back into medding into the

election in 2020 and possibly next year. >> many waiting to hear what the president himself will say about this. janai norman live in washington, thanks. speaking of the president despite the cloud of controversy he heads to capitol hill today. but he's looking to gain more support for the american health care act. >> he is set to meet with house republicans, that is, the vote is just two days away. it's still not clear if there is enough support to push through that replacement for the affordable care act. overnight paul ryan said changes have been made to the bill to help older americans. and today's the second day of confirmation hearings for neal gorsuch. the judge addressed democrats concerned about his independence from politics, white house chief of staff reince priebus described gorsuch as the type of judge that has the vision of donald trump. gorsuch insisted the bench is no place for politics. >> these days we sometimes hear judges cynically described as politicians in robes. seeking to enforce their own politics rather than striving to

apply the law impartially. if i thought that were true i'd hang up the robe. >> senate democrats clashed with other members saying they'll try to block his nomination for coming to a final vote. they blocked president obama's nominee from getting a vote. they're set to last through thursday. oil expected to start flowing through the dakota access pipeline this week according to the company building the pipeline. in a court filing last night energy transfer partners said physical attacks along the pipeline will not stop operations. the company didn't elaborate on those attacks but two native american tribes and supporters had blocked completion of the pipeline. and we're tracking a mixed bag of weather on this first full day of spring. wet weather returned to the coast and showers expected into tomorrow on the west coast and record highs could fall in other states today. get this, temperatures in texas and other parts of the south

fire crews are hard at work fighting a massive fire near kansas city. it started at an apartment complex but spread to several house and buildings. 17 homes were destroyed or damaged. one fire official described the scene as a war zone. three firefighters were injured but not seriously. the window is making it especially tough to fight. a plane crash landed in south sudan and hit a fire truck

as landing in fog and burst into flames and the pilot lost control. about 50 were on board that flight. reports say the pilot found the only door that wasn't on fire and opened it allowing everyone to escape. about a dozen people were injured. a suspected gang member has been arrested in connection with the murder of two colorado teenagers. g gustavo marquez was arrested in el paso not far from where the bodies of derek benjamin greer and natalie partida were found. the investigation is ongoing. in northern california, police are searching for a woman who allegedly hit several people with her car in a walmart parking lot. surveillance video shows her nearly hitting a mother and a 3-year-old child. police say that she did strike at least five other people. she was apparent liang bring that the store refused to allow her to return some batteries that she had purchased. >> all that because of
