good morning, everyone on this busy thursday. unity on capitol hill after that shocking attack on members of congress leaving them running for their lives. >> republican lawmakers steve scalise was among several people shot. he remains in critical condition this morning as he's facing more surgeries. >> he did get a visit last night from president trump and the first lady and the president called him a real fighter. investigators are still gathering information on the gunman who died in a shoot-out with police. they say he had repeatedly slammed the president and other republicans on social media. >> abc's stephanie ramos is live at the practice field in alexandria where it all happened. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: diane, kendis, good morning. the crime scene tape is still up here at the baseball field where those lawmakers were getting ready for batting practice yesterday morning. but were shot at instead. a blaze of gunshots fired at
republican congressmen at a baseball diamond eight miles from capitol hill in alexandria, virginia. the gunshots erupted at 7:00 a.m. wednesday morning. 26 republican members of congress practicing for their annual charity baseball game against democrats. some seeking refuge in the dugout. >> there's also a victim down in the baseball field. >> reporter: that victim congressman steve scalise of louisiana with a rifle shot to the left hip, medevacked off the field. the house majority whip's capitol police security detail, two agents, firing back at the shooter from behind an suv according to witnesses. both officers injured. within minutes local police joining in the gun battle. the shooter, 66-year-old james hodgkinson is down at 7:14. the unemployed illinois man had reportedly been in the washington area for a couple of months living out of his van and had a long and public history of
anti-trump and anti-republican rhetoric. >> there was an individual middle-aged caucasian male that asked us, you know, hey, you know, is that republican, democrats? we're like, republicans and he turned and went toward the field. >> reporter: unclear if that was hodgkinson asking the question but he is now dead. in all, four shot, the congressman, one of the capitol hill police officers, a staffer and lobbyist. to others injured. the president denouncing it as a brutal assault. >> we may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because above all they love our country. >> reporter: overnight president trump and the first lady met with doctors at the hospital treating representative scalise and the capitol hill police officer. it wasn't just the field here hit by gunfire. car windows, local business, the
local ymca, their windows shattered by bullets. as for the baseball game, lawmakers were about to practice for, that charity game is still on for tonight at nationals park. kendis, diane. >> yeah, the first pitch at 7:05 and there's still tickets available. stephanie, thank you. we're getting new details on those others who were injured in that attack. in addition to congressman scalise, matt mika is a lobbyist for tyson foods shot in the chest and other areas and also is in critical condition. >> zach barth was texting for help during the shoot-out. he's now out of the hospital and u.s. capitol police officer crystal griner was shot in the ankle anddavid bailey and both are expected to make full recoveries. the fbi is investigating every aspect of that gunman's life. >> pierre thomas explains.
>> reporter: police racing to the home of james hodgkinson, in a desperate search for clues about the would-be mass murderer in his hometown of southwestern illinois people shocked. >> he was in a few fights and stuff like that but nothing that would demonstrate violence as far as what he did. >> reporter: the fbi focused on these posts portraying a deep hatred for republicans, even calling president trump a traitor. trump has destroyed our democracy. it's time to destroy tru trump & company. and he posted a cartoon critical of congressman steve scalise who he allegedly shot. he joined anti-republican facebook groups including one dubbed terminate the republican party. his now removed facebook page showing his ardent support of bernie sanders and confirming he volunteered for the campaign. >> the alleged shooter at the republican baseball practice
this morning is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign. i am sickened by this despicable act. >> reporter: he had no love for hillary clinton either. posting, a nomination for hillary equals a win for trump but there were run-ins with the law. just two months ago police were called to his illinois home after neighbors complained about dozens of shots being fired. >> i said i'm going to call the sheriff and report him. i said he's not stopping. >> reporter: he was only given a warning. but his life was apparently starting to unravel. his wife tells us that he left for alexandria, virginia, two months ago without work, the building inspector was allegedly living out of a gym bag. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to pierre there and last night the members of the democratic baseball team invited the republican players to their pregame dinner. >> the republicans got a standing ovation as they entered the democratic club. louisiana democrat cedric richmond said he was looking forward to pitching to scalise who is a louisiana republican.
he says scalise is both a good friend and a worthy opponent. >> he's a tough spunky little fighter. that's just who he is which is why we have such a love/hate relationship because he's just that kid, guy that won't ever give up so no matter how many types -- >> reporter: he also brought louisiana crawfish to the dinner in scalise's honor and stopped by the hospital twice yesterday to see scalise and plans to visit again before today's game. and congressman scalise is the first member of congress to be wounded by gunfire since gabby giffords. >> yeah, she was gravely wounded while meeting voters in her home state of arizona in her district six years ago. in a statement gifford said this shooting is an attack on all who serve and allscalise, the other victims and their family, friends and colleagues who survived. this sign of unity, members of that democratic congressional baseball team to take time out

i said, sir, we're not personally investigating you. >> that was james comey testifying last week when the president was not under investigation while comey was director of the fbi. but that may no longer be the case. special counsel robert mueller is reportedly now investigating president trump for possible obstruction of justice. sources tell "the washington post" the president came under scrutiny just days after he fired comey. they say mueller is planning to interview the director of the national intelligence and head of the nsa the president had asked them to publicly deny any collusion and get comey to back off the michael flynn investigation. the president's attorney responded last night saying the fbi leak of information is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. the senate has overwhelmi overwhelmingly approved a wide range of sanctions against russia for interfering in the election. it voted 97-2 to target key
sectors of the russian economy and individual people responsible for carrying out the attacks. secretary of state rex tillerson urged the lawmakers to make sure the sanctions allow the president flexibility to adjust to diplomatic changes. breaking overnight the port of charleston has been evacuated. officials received a threat made against a container ship that had just arrived from new york city. a safety zone of one nautical mile has been established around that ship while the threat is investigated and we have just learned the coast guard has detained the person who is considered to be the source of that threat. overseas london's fire commissioner says the fire that engulfed a high-rise is finally out. at least 12 people were killed when the tower went up in flames. 18 people remain in critical condition. the commissioner says parts of the building are simply unsafe. survivors are sharing terrifying stories of trapped residents resorting to climbing down ropes made from bedsheets and even more desperate measures. >> from what she was saying i'm about to throw my baby, please catch the baby.

ground. >> some common ground. that congressman echoing the president's call to come together as a americans. we're going to have much more reaction to the attack on "good morning america" after your local news. and right now we're learning new details in a shooting out of san francisco. the u.p.s. driver who killed three of his co-workers had complained of working too much overtime. but a union official says jimmy lamb was not angry about that. he had just filed a grievance. the 38-year-old burst into the morning drivers' meeting yesterday opening fire without warning. >> he was right behind me. it was like six, seven shots inside and at least five to six outside. i was just running. i didn't -- i didn't wait to look at the guy. >> i was just scared. just scared, you know, for the simple fact that it happened around us and it's sad for the victims. >> and two other drivers were injured. lamb then killed himself when police approached him. sources say he was a loner who had mental health issues and was
estranged from his wife. police are still trying to determine what set him off. some new developments in the nationwide manhunt for two escaped prisoners described by authorities as dangerous beyond description. police say donnie rowe and rickie dubose longtime cell mates murdered two guards during a brazen escape from a transport bus in georgia. this morning officials have released the photos of the two fallen guards, christopher monica and curtis blue, a reward has now grown to $115,000. overnight north korea admitting it released american student otto warmbier from prison as a humanitarian gesture. later this morning his parents are expected to accuse north korea of terrorizing and brutalizing their son. the 22-year-old former student arrived in cincinnati in a coma. he had served just over a year of a 15-year sentence of hard labor for stealing a poster. and we have new video of a wild road rage incident in southern california. take a look at the dark colored car weaving through traffic.
there's actually a woman hanging on to the passenger side door. she eventually lets go and appears to be okay. this all happened monday in santa ana and there's still no word on what led to this. we're getting big news in the world of boxing. the match between two of the most outspoken fighters perhaps in the world is on. >> floyd mayweather jr. and ufc's bad boy conor mcgregor will meet in vegas august 26th. mcgregor shared his excitement on social media by making fun of his opponent's age with a photo of floyd mayweather sr. financial terms have not been released yet. if you need any more proof that pittsburgh is a sports town, check out the record crowd that turned out yesterday for the penguins stanley cup victory parade and rally. the estimated crowd of 650,000 is actually more than double the size of the city's actual population. >> wow. in california today a parade to celebrate the golden state
