administration post and then getting ready to present them to president-elect donald trump. it means today we'll start to get a better sense of who he will pick to run this city and this nation. donald trump's white house taking shape. his transition team working fast to figure out who goes where. multiple campaign sources tell nbc news high-profile people are in the mix for high-profile positions like chris who didn't rule out attorney general rumors. >> i certainly have the energy for it. >> mike rodgers giving no comment on whether he could be cia chief. nbc's cynthia mcfadden reports exclusively the president-elect's team has named nearly 30 people to whom he'd like to give access to the most

foreign policy. the list includes current and former members of congress and the mill tai and jeff sessions and mike flynn. maybe some outsiders but some are outspoken. like boulton. political insiders hunting for clues in hunt's every move like his decision to bring his son-in-law jared kushnero office. he won't get that job. he's not allowed. federal law prevents that. that rules out ivanka, donald junior, and eric too. overnight they submitted other names of a list of up to five options for each capitol position. not all from new york or d.c. trump values loyalty and that will likely be rewarded with

are awkward. i happened to think we celebrate our democracy by best showing we can transfer power without being ugly and president obama certainly did a good job. president bush created a good precedent. he allowed for the transitions to be done actually before the elections. there was a lot of work done. president obama continued that tradition and actually got support from congress. so this year both teams who were competing, trump and clinton have been working since may. so there's been more groundwork done this time than in any time in history. >> i know the chief of staff job should be the first one he should address. tell me why. >> it's the only one not dictated by congress at the white house. he certainly gives definition to the branch and our country and certainly to the united states around the world to who he is.

discipline to the white house. i think it ee important to name a chief of staff very, very early on. president clinton when he came to office, matt mcclarendon who was a wonderful person was the last person he named. and that meant most of the people in the capitol and the white house had already been identified and he didn't have the gravitas given to him. i think it's important to name the chief of staff to the white speak truthfully and candid to the president, someone there not to please the president even though they serve at the pleasure of the president. they've got to tell the president what he needs to know, not necessarily what he wants to know. even though the fancy piece of paper hangs on your wall, it says you serve at the pleasure

it's to tell the president what he needs to know to do his job. >> a lot of people have observed in the transition in the days and months. in some ways the country is at its most vulnerable because you have new people coming in and learning this job and everyone thinks about national security. tell me what's done. give me some reassurance how the new administration will be ready. >> the new administration will be organized happen click, click, click perfectly. the reality is the world doesn't follow the 100-day plan. something bad will happen. one of our enemies will think they have an opportunity to expose itself and they will do something and you have to be ready for that. you have to plan for it, but you don't have to broadcast it. but, yes, on day one the president is the president.

>> apple with chestnut. a traditional recipe. i grew up in plymouth, mass. keep it simple. you have pork. i've added some onions and celery diced and you're going to cook that until it's translucent. once that's done, your base is ready for the stuffing. i have brie owe. it keeps your stuffing -- it doesn't let it dry out so i really, really nice. >> very airy. >> exactly. once those brie owe cubes are in there, the next thing you've about got to do is sweep off the basil and butter. that's where the apples and chestnuts go. you fold everything. season it up. fresh parsley. beautiful thyme and awesome sage. don't be scared with it.
