>> let's get to our top story. post holiday shoppers across the country and police in riot gear. in long island where one of those broke out. >> reporter: good morning. gunshots spread throughout several states and malls throughout the country causing chaos and even evacuation at places like this, roosevelt mall here in new york. post christmas mayhem, striking malls all across the country. in this new jersey mall, pandemonium when a person shouted gun and was slammed by a chair during a fight. 5,000 shoppers tried to escape what they believed was a life-threatening ordeal aband abandoning meals in the food court. in ohio, police responded to reports of shots fired at

>> we had a sort of stampede. >> reporter: officers used pepper spray to stop a large crowd fighting later confirming there were no gunshots, a juvenile taken into custody for assaulting a police officer. meanwhile, disturbances across 15 malls across the country were reported in at least a dozen states. in tennessee, incidents reported in three separate malls. in manchester, connecticut, several sites broke out all at once several hundred teens involved. >> they started yelling and pushing each other. >> reporter: this video shows an officer trying to control the crowd. five other police departments responded to the scene, one officer assaulted with no life-threatening injuries. eight people were arrested fo e forcing the mall to close its doors two hours before scheduled. >> it looked like people were throwing purges and fighting, a huge mob,

it's dry but mostly cold today. elsewhere, this storm is packing a mighty pump. this morning, a familiar sound, digging out. >> how the heck am i getting out of here? >> reporter: after a winter wallop surrounded cars and homes snow drifts so massive they blocked front doors leaving a perfect imprint. a difficult day back to work today in muchorthern plains. across south dakota, blinding snow and zero visibility on the roads, a stretch of 294 closed at one point. in minnesota, this icehouse broke through the frozen lake as temperatures plummeted. foreca forecasters warned up to half an inch of ice could freeze over and travelers urged to bring extra flashlights and food and water. in wisconsin, a dramatic rescue, 10 anglers left stranded after

>> we're planning for the worst case scenario. >> reporter: planning for a state of emergency after this massive sinkhole opened up, three homes deemed uninhab uninhabitable, 22 homes evacuated. >> we saw the hole at the side of the house and the separation. >> reporter: demetrius is terrified her house is next. >> if it swallowed his house it might take ours with it. >> reporter: officials believe a sewer pipe buried 45 feet below the ground may have burst cau causing a sinkhole to form and forced the city to shut off utili utilities. this isn't the first deep problem for the area. the same road caved in back in 2004. this latest sinkhole is even larger 250 feet long and 100 feet wide. david rushed out, grabbing what he could in minutes. >> clothes and valuables and christmas presents.
