storms expected in the great lakes with heavy snow and high winds. we have al back to tell us more about that. >> let's show you what is happening. we have what is going to develop into a nor'easter as it makes its way up into new england. from philadelphia south we have strong storms and heavy thunderstorms. you see back through pennsylvania, western new york snow starting to fire up. along the coast we have cold front and low pressure developing up along this system. so by earlier today we will see coastal low moving into the northeast with more rain and snow. this is mostly an inland event. parts of new england heavy snow. one to three inches of rain per pour with the possibility of thunder snow. as it pulls away the winds come across the great lakes so lake effect snow bands will develop. look at snowfall amounts anywhere from 12 to 18 up

as we move into parts of central and western new york and on to pennsylvania anywhere from nine inches to a foot and a half, in some places two feet of snow. the good news is this is a very quick mover. it will leave very strong winds. could be airport delays tomorrow from boston to new york city. now to president-elect donald trump taking a much different tone talking about president obama just hours after slamming him on twitter. just where does their relationship stand? >> reporter: twists and turns. senior transition official tells nbc news today the president-elect will spend part of his day doing inauguration speech prep. his complaints turning to contradictions. tre

president. >> it's a very routine thing. it's not a big deal. when i won they knew i had big business all over the place. it's a very simple situation. >> reporter: the president-elect preferring to focus instead on a different business, sprint and the announcement the telecom company will keep or create 5,000 jobs in the u.s. a sprint spokesperson confirming the additional jobs are part of a deal announced weeks ago. from now trump is focussing on federal agencies with an eye on making changes to the v.a. now considering public-private health care option for veterans and possibly forming an advisory council. for trump already looking past the transition with now just 22 days left until the oval office. the president-elect still has not named hisk

secretary, one of just a few open cabinet positions left including the heavy agriculture department, too. as early as today the obama administration is expected to reveal new measures to punish russia over suspected meddling in the u.s. election as it deals with a new dust up with israel. peter alexander is at the white house with more. >> this is a real-life clash of the titans, obama, trump, netanyahu and clinton. certainly not going quietly on the issue of policy. top new actions today against russia. this morning the white house is preparing to announce retaliatory steps against russia. two senior u.s. officials confirm to nbc news the announced steps will likely include economic sanctions

coordinated by the treasury departments and additional covert steps. the u.s. has been careful trying to avoid engaging russia. late thursday president-elect trump dismissed the threat of new sanctions. >> i think we are going to get on with our lives. >> senior u.s. officials tell nbc news they are highly confident russian president vladimir putin was personally involved in the hacking. this morning the obama administration is taking heat for fierce criticism of israel delivered in forceful farewell speech by john kerry. >> friends need to tell each other the hard truths. >> kerry tearing into israel for plans to build settlements calling it a threat to peace. israel's benjamin netanyahu's furious.

is only one president at a time especially as it relates to foreign affairs. one of the real bottom lines is there is a growing sense of yesterday's bitter back and forth may have marked the end of the two state solution as guiding policy as it looks towards peace between israel and palestinians. two soldiers were killed when their apache helicopter crashed about 25 miles southeast of houston. the texas army national guard says names are being withheld until their families are notified. the helicopter was on a routine training mission when witnesses say it broke apart in the air. a piece of the chopper's blade was found near the crash site. no word yet on what caused that crash. flight recorders revealed no evidence of explosion on board a russian plane that cras.

a terrorist act. a russian military official said the captain indicated there was, quote, a special situation that began unfolding. the official wouldn't elaborate but noted it is likely it was caused by several factors. president obama designated land in utah and nevada as national monuments marking the administration's latest move to protect environmentally sensitive areas. the bears ear national monument will cover more than a million acres. it is a blow for republican leaders who say it will add another layer of unnecessary government control. in nevada the monument includes rare fossils and dinosaur tracks. let's get a check of the weather with al. >> let's show you what we've got going on for your area

ronan farrow is in the orange room talking, unfortunately, to the reaction of another stunning death in hollywood. >> i thought when i was in the orange room i would get to cover the latest viral crazing can something feel-good. here we are for the third time this week talking about the loss of an icon, debbie reynolds who lost her daughter the day before. cher tweeted this is beyond heartbreaking. b debbie was an idol. >> the world is finding ways to mourn both mother and also daughter. a light saber vigil people had at disneyland. on the hollywood walk of fame where debbie doesn't have a star, fans created one for her. last month carrie fisher said of her mom there are very few women from her generation who worked like that, raised children, had horrible relationships and lost all her money and got it back again. my mom knew debbie reynolds and she loved her and she kept coming back to the fact that she was tough. bb
