the last one before tuesday's all-important new hampshire primary as marco rubio surges, donald trump and the rest of the gop field take aim. while hillary clinton tries to rally women supporters to close the gap between herself and bernie sanders. we're live on the campaign trail. shooting scare. gunmen dressed as police officers storm their way into a boxing event. onlookers, including children, running for their lives. >> daddy, help me! daddy! what was that? >> this morning, one person is dead while several of the attackers are still on the loose and super frenzy. super bowl 50 one day away. tens of thousands of fans pouring into san francisco. many not worried about the sticker shock associated with the price of a ticket. >> what's a few thousands dollars in the sands of time?

8:02 am
>> we will come back in a bit, dylan. let's get to the stoptop story. in taiwan, hundreds of people had to be pulled from the rubble after the earthquake. many of the injured are babies and children. nbc's kelly cobiella is in london with more. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning to you. it is now dark in tainan and more than 800 soldiers are helping to search for the missing. they were in the huge apartment building. some infants. the apartment building is 16 floors and basement. people who got out say they could hear their neighbors calling for help. >> reporter: one after another, rescuers pulled babies and children from the collapsed concrete. mothers too. clearly injured and in pain. this was the 16 story apartment building.
8:03 am
now the focus of the massive rescue effort. the bed shook. everything toppled this woman said. she and her husband made it out on their own. across the city of 2 million, many did the same. the quake struck when people were sleeping. >> i was awakened by the violent shaking of the whole building. the quake began before 4:00 a.m. my 7-year-old was in a different room. we could hear her crying for us and we could not get out of her beds to walk to her. >> reporter: the 6.4 earthquake was strong and shallow. by dawn, its impact clear. multi-story buildings tilting. cars crushed under balconies. dozens hurt. dozens more trapped. this morning, the biggest rescue effort is here at the wegwan building. rescuers pulled more than 200 from the rubble. even family pets. they are still searching for survivors here and across the
8:04 am
already, there are questions if builders cut corners on the high-rise. the focus is now on recovery efforts. dozens hospitalized. reports of more than 400 injured now. many people are spending the night in shelters while rescuers still are not sure, sheinelle and craig, how many are missing. >> thank you, kelly. authorities in new york city will be back on the scene of the deadly crane collapse as they figure out what caused the structure to topple. the crane was secured during picking up speed. it slammed into a building and crashed to the ground scattering debris more blocks as you can see here. the 300 tons of twisted metal killed one and injured three
8:05 am
officials say it is a miracle it wasn't worse. some candidates could make their last stand in new hampshire. the stakes are high with the first in the nation's primary just 72 hours away. we have you covered on both sides. let's begin with hallie jackson following the republicans. >> reporter: good morning, guys. a lot of interest in the race. officials predicting a record turnout here in new hampshire. we are looking ahead to tonight's debate where donald trump will be on stage this time after raising eyebrows the day after his snow day. donald trump, a no-show. blaming snow in new hampshire for skipping straight to south carolina. promising he is not leaving the granite state in the cold. >> my focus is in south carolina. >> reporter: trump pulling crowds in florence, but in new hampshire, jeb bush. tweeting at trump, my
8:06 am
to campaign during the storm. trump bashing bush back. >> jeb bush has spent $112 million and nobody shows up. what the hell? >> reporter: while trump's still leading in new hampshire, it is marco rubio rising to second now. explaining why to nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> it is not enough to be angry. you have to tell people what you are going to do. i think the cumulative effect of doing that for months will help us. >> reporter: rubio at tonight's debate sits in the line of fire and the other establishment candidates look to make their mark. this state is a must win for some. even as rubio picks up an endorsement from bobby jindal and takes aim at ted cruz. >> if you get a call on tuesday night saying i dropped out. it is not true. keep voting. >> reporter: that is a dig at the senator's campaign.
8:07 am
though slipping in new hampshire polls, but in the top tier nationally. >> the two big initiatives i'm running on, repealing every word of obamacare and adopting a simple flat tax so you fill out your tax on a post card and abolish the irs. >> reporter: what can we expect to see at tonight's debate? look for immigration to be one of the major topics. it is important for marco rubio's potential vulnerabilities and what donald trump likes to talk about. we could see the republican field pounce on that. >> thank you, hallie. on the democratic side, bernie sanders holds a lead over hillary clinton in the granite state. the question is will hillary be able to come back for the primary? we have kristen welker with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. senator sanders has a 20-point lead over secretary clinton. she added events to her schedule today.
8:08 am
volunteers and telling supporters don't give up. with the democratic race growing more combative, hillary clinton and bernie sanders faced off at a party dinner. >> the only way we create the change that we need is through a political revolution. >> i will spend all my tomorrows doing everything i can to make your tomorrows better. >> reporter: following a day filled with fireworks. >> i want to say a word to the extraordinary people, particularly young people, who are supporting senator sanders. i know you may not be for me now, but i am for you. >> reporter: meanwhile, bernie sanders rallied his faithful. painting clinton as the establish. ment ment ment. >> reporter: he has been hitting
8:09 am
with wall street and giving speeches to goldman sachs and clinton responding to andrea mitchell. >> are you sorry you did it? >> no, i'm not. i thought it was a good way to communicate what i was seeing in the world. >> reporter: accusing sanders of smearing her. >> i think the campaign he claims to be positive is engaged in artful smear and inuendo. >> reporter: sanders has a double digit lead. supporters ready to put a win on the board. >> we are tired of playing the big game. we want to see things happen. >> reporter: clinton is calling in reinforcements hoping for a repeat. she was trailing barack obama here, but now she is looking to pull ahead.
8:10 am
secretary clinton said she would look into the possibility of releasing the transcripts of paid speeches. so far the campaign has not released anything and officials tell me they are looking into it. meanwhile, today, sanders and clinton have a busy day of campaigning ahead. sheinelle. >> kristen welker, thank you. >> alice jordan is here with us. and steve kornacki is here with us as well. good morning to you. >> steve, let's start with you and let's start with donald trump. a commanding lead in new hampshire. some polls show him flipping nationally. he skipped the debate in iowa, but expected to be on the stage tonight. let's talk about what he has to do. is new hampshire a must-win moment for trump? >> i think it pretty much is. the 13--point lead, the eight
8:11 am
eight days in american politics. you remember hillary clinton and barack obama, she was trailing at this point in new hampshire by double digits. she came back and won on primary day. the cliche is a lot can happen in a short period of time in politics. that is true this week. we have seen marco rubio starting to move up significantly in the polls here. donald trump is maybe sliding back a bit. he is not growing. if you are donald trump and lost iowa and turn around and follow it up with a loss in new hampshire, especially after leading, it is really hard to see how he can jump start his campaign in later stages. he needs to put wins on the board steadily or seen to be beating expectations steadily to stay viable in the later contests. he has to come out with a win tuesday or he is in trouble. >> alice, steve mentioned marco rubio. up six points in a recent poll.
8:12 am
or so-called outsider candidates. ted cruz and donald trump going after him tonight. you also have kasich and christie and governor bush as well. campaigns on life support. how big is the bull's-eye on marco rubio's back in the debate tonight in new hampshire? >> he is the one they have to take down. he is cutting into the vote margin. especially for christie and kasich. it is make or break. he has a poor showing. he is probably out. kasich has about 2.5. doesn't look good for him. kasich has put all resources in new hampshire. he does have the best ground game of anyone. he could surprise a bit. >> and steve, let's talk about bernie sanders for a moment. enjoying a commanding lead in new hampshire. new hampshire has been kind to the clintons. with bill clinton in the past. his campaign. and hillary clinton in 2008. so is there any sense that support will perhaps turn out on tuesday and give clinton a bit of a surprise victory? >> i think there is an
8:13 am
you have polls showing between 20 or 30 points for sanders. most people think that will tighten. when you look at the clinton family history here, you think of hillary clinton obviously coming back and winning in 2008, but the other one was bill clinton in 1992. we remember new hampshire as the state that made him the comeback kid. what we forget is he actually lost new hampshire that night by eight points to paul tsongas. that is how he called himself the comeback kid. that is something to keep in mind. i think the clinton campaign would like to get out of new hampshire, they would like to drive the deficit into single digits. they like to close with some momentum. they like to be able to tell the media, look, bernie sanders is from next door. he is from vermont. a huge advantage there. there is not a huge advantage to being from vermont here in new hampshire. that is another story. they will say that. they want the media to put an
8:14 am
they want to say we beat expectations. >> elise, quickly. after new hampshire, south carolina primary. hillary clinton doing very well in south carolina. do very well around the south as well. after new hampshire, is there a path for bernie sanders? >> i think it just depends on how successful bernie is at expanding his message beyond non-white voters and if he can reach more diverse audiences. so far, he hasn't been successful. >> it is exciting to watch. elise and steve, thank you for talking with us this morning. several authorities are holding a michigan man who they say was plotting terrorist attacks in the name of isis. a federal complaint alleges the 22-year-old planned attacks on police and area church. he has been under investigation since may with agents following his gun purchases and social media accounts where he
8:15 am
including beheadings. he is in custody on weapons and drug charges. excitement is building in san francisco for tomorrow's big game. security is tight for the tens of thousands who descended on san francisco for super bowl 50. among the fun, peyton manning is facing new questions about hgh use. we have nbc's miguel almaguer outside levi's stadium where the game is played tomorrow. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. security is super tight. if you are looking for a ticket for the big game, it is not impossible to get, but it is expensive. as the sun is set to rise in san francisco, soon more fans will hit the streets. 1 million came here for the super bowl, but only 70,000 will go to the game. >> i would do anything to get a ticket to the game. i'd love to. i can't afford it.
8:16 am
yard line could set you back $20,000. the prices are sky high in the upper deck. $3,000 and a pair of binoculars for section 411. >> the panthers don't go to the super bowl every day. >> reporter: randall dropped nearly $5,000 for his seats. >> what is a few thousand dollars in the sands of time? >> reporter: before the game, drama. the commissioner confirming the league is reviewing allegations against peyton manning and whether the superstar quarterback received hgh. human growth hormone. >> i don't see the investigation as any type of distraction for peyton manning. he is focused on the task at hand. >> reporter: with manning denying use, his attorney says his wife received medication for her use only. ahead of its biggest night, the nfl trying to manage i.c.e. hauled in $39 million

8:18 am
prepared for standing out in the snow. that's what i'm used to, so i didn't bring my hand warmers. we did have some snowfall across new england yesterday. we did actually see this as a little engine that could kind of storm as the snow just continued to dump on areas like rhode island. this is in warwick, rhode island, also parts of connecticut saw steadier snow. we did have some higher elevations across connecticut and massachusetts pick up nearly a foot of snow. so, we haven't really seen this driving types of conditions all that much this winter. so, it was tough for the cars to get used to that again and getting used to shoveling off the snow. we are going to see a lot of the snow melt away. we have a ridge in the jet stream. that's going to start to build in and help temperatures warm well above average. we should get into the 40s and even some 50s, especially as we go into the next couple of days

8:20 am
afternoon of fun turned into chaos. the weigh-in ceremony for the boxing event in dublin quickly turned terrifying. at least four gunmen opened fire in the lobby of the regency hotel. people making their way out the side entrance. in the video, you can hear the voice of a child crying help. >> daddy, help me. daddy, what was that? >> reporter: a front page newspaper photo shows two gunmen wearing police uniforms and carrying assault rifles. the shooters entered with handguns and one dressed as a woman. a bbc journalist. >> i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: the associated press says one man was killed and two others wounded. local police ruled out a terror attack attributeing the violence
8:21 am
police are worried this will ignite a bigger gang war. the boxing heevent to be held tonight has been cancelled. it is frightening for the kids in the room. >> thomas, thanks. in los angeles, a doctor has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for killing patients by over prescribing medication. convicted of second-degree murder. the first time a u.s. doctor has been convicted of recklessly prescribing drugs. she wrote thousands of prescriptions for vicodin and percocet. an update on a dog's tale we brought you last week about the retired ohio police officer trying to keep his k-9 water near. officer matt hickey was told he had to buy his police dog ajax at auction. that sparked the social media
