live from the news station, 7 news live at five, continues. 5:30, that time of year, a lot of people are trying to get the w 2's together and all of the other paperwork together. the irs has announced a hardware failure. >> and this evening, 24 hours later, we still have few answers about what caused it. the bigger question, whether you filed already or not, is how will this affect our returns? well, i talked to the local preparers to learn more about the delay and if you should hold off on filing. >>reporter: single dad with four kids, he is eager to get his tax refund soon. so when he found out today about the irs hardware failure, he was worried about how a possible delay could affect his finances. >> going to be hard, but just sit back and wait, the waiting game, until they can get the glitch out. >>reporter: tax preparers, also pawns in the waiting game. >> every 15-20 minute, i'm looking to see if they're online.
explain to customers why the checks flnt the mail. >> the customers are freaking out, two phone calls today already and wanting to know about their checks, if we've got them. and as soon as we answered the phone, we go into this, well, the sirs down right now, they say, never mind, don't even check on it. we understand. so they're being really understandable about it. >>reporter: normally, when a return is transmitted to the irs, a preparer won't know if it's accepted within 15 minutes, here's what's been happening during the outage, you press transmit, wait a while, only to learn there are 0 acknowledgments. in a statement on the irs website, the agency provided some hope for electronic filers say, quote, we continue to expect that 9 out of 10 taxpayers will receive their refunds within 21 days. by this afternoon, the agency had still provided no explanation of what caused the failure. and the https was crossed out with the red line, in the url of the where's my refrund section of u.s..gov. a page that is usually secure where taxpayers enter their
>> you get used to government type things being behind and slack and things of that nature. but yeah, it's a little shocking to hear that they don't have their game together at this point. >>reporter: so even with the delay, tax preparers say you should still come in and file, they can get everything processed and then just hold that information securely and press submit when the irs website is back up. >> how crazy would you go, if you went through the thing with the paperwork and to get your tax return done, it doesn't work. >> that's what's happening now. the website itself is not down, just certain aspects like e-filing, the most important. >> the part are you submit the return. >> the other big story we've been following tonight is about the roads outside. and well, people have strong opinions about this. the condition of those roads, are they getting better? local leaders say if they're not fixed soon, it could have an affect on businesses, that could move into south carolina. there is a bill in columbia to

but for now, conditions are dry, and skies had a chance to clear over the parts of the upstate. many of us still looking at a lot of high clouds. we'll be on the lookout for showers that try to move in from the northeast. after that point, that area of low pressure pushess out and our skies clear, and temperatures have a chance to really cool off. quiet weather extends back in northern california. the super bowl forecast looking great. they're going to see a lot of sunshine with temperatures in the 70s on sunday. so looking good there and not bad here either. here at home in the morning, we'll look for winds to be out of the north, clear skies, a cold start to our day, most areas will start out below freezing. lots of sunshine, and cooler temperatures tomorrow afternoon. come teared to where we were today -- compared to where we were today. saturday, a freezing start to the day, a lot of sunshine for the morning. some high clouds moving in during the afternoon. and no rain in the forecast for us. so a few showers are possible,
skies are going to clear. temperatures will be cold, to start your friday. we've got sunny and cool weather on the way for the end of the week and also the weekend. right now, at 41 degrees in asheville. 57 in greenville, we're at 59 degrees in laurens and 58 in greenwood, not feeling bad. we'll expect beautiful weather but cooler, temperatures a little bit below average for this time of the year. mainly lower 50s for the spartanburg area and also down into greenwood, the mountains are going to stop in the mid 40s for tomorrow. here's what to expect for the next 72 hours, a few chapgs on the way -- changes on the way, lower 50s for tomorrow and saturday, mid 50s on sunday. below freezing friday and saturday nights. and then a big area of cold air comes in for next week. we'll stop only at 40 degrees tuesday and wednesday. on monday, the upstate could see a few rain showers it looks like, mountains have a better chance of snow showers in the first half of next week. highs in the 40s and 50s.
