team coverage the massive winter storm on the way to hampton roads. crews are continuing to monitor conditions to make sure the roads are safe. newschannel threes stefania okolie is live in newport news with the latest. winter blast isn )t here yet but you can certainly feel it. talk about conditions --later this morning we re expected to see the first of the wintry mix here on the peninsula-- throughout the week crews have been planning watching the forecast --we know they were out last night for pre treatment on the roads which is certainly visible this morning -- officials tell us they have more than two thousand-500 crew members and more than 13 thousand pieces of equipment. crews plan on using nearly 650 thousand tons of salt, sand mixture -- thats the weight of more than 20 cars and nearly two million gallons of liquid salt to clear the roadways. as you know governor mcauliff declared a state of emergency here in virginia which means several agencies are on standby for aid-- in addition to 24- hour crews treating roads for ice --the governor talks about what he also needs virginians to

intense weather can be a real pain when it affects your power. dominion power says they are doing whatever they can to make sure you stay safe and warm. a dominion power worker strapped a camera on his helmet to show us what is like working on these power lines on east little creek road in norfolk. they are part of the 2 hundred crews in hampton roads and northern

responding if your power goes out. they )re about to go on 12 hour shifts and are making sure their trucks have gas and are ready to handle the storms. dominion power officials say theyre talking to other utility companies in the country -- as far away as florida and alabama to make sure that if they need back up - theyve got it. first responders across hampton roads are also gearing up for this winter storm. the virginia beach fire department says they have been in constant communication with the state emergency management officials. the conditions they ll encounter over the next few days are expected to be less than ideal when responding to emergencies. the american red cross is also urging folks to be prepared ahead of the storm -- and to avoid unnecessary

airlines are already canceling thousands of flights ahead of the monster storm. american says all eight flights out of norfolk have been canceled for today. the newport news airport says all six american flights they have been canceled. united airlines announced it would suspend flights at its washington dulles international airport hub and other mid- atlantic airports starting this afternoon. make sure you double-check your flight status if you re are flying anywhere today or this weekend. in hampton-- roads are back open this morning-- a massive water main break shut down mercury boulevard in both directions for a couple of hours last night. water was coming out really quickly and taking over the roadway. it was so bad crews had to shut down mercury boulevard between cunningham drive and saville road. police have arrested a gloucester teen--caught with a gun on a school property. two americans freed from iran are waking up this morning

friday in inland north carolina first. the snow will then cross the state line into hampton roads, again as all snow. areas along the albemarle and outer banks, though, will more than likely see rain. then, through the day, as low pressure moves closer to the area, it will drive in slightly warmer temperatures, which will cause the snow to transition into rain for most areas. however, our northern communities, especially along the peninsulas, may see a slower transition to rain than the rest of us, meaning you could see a little more snow on friday. saturday will start with rain across most of the area. but later in the day, once the low exits the coast,

down the foundation of the republic for the u-s government. two americans freed from iran are waking up with their loved ones this morning. christian pastor saeed abedini returned home to north carolina yesterday whi;e former marine amir hermati arrived back home in michigan. both men spent the last few days receiving medical treatment at a germany military hospital following several years in captivity. on the military watch-- twelve marines have been declared dead. the marines went missing when the two helicopters carrying them apparently crashed. it happened off the coast of hawaii last week. six marines were on board each helicopter. the coast guard says debris similar with the helicopters has been collected by the marine corps. a gloucester high school student is under arrest - officials say they got an anonymous tip about a student with a gun on school property. authorities searched the student s car and found the handgun along with marijuana. the 17-year-old is in police

new this morning shot a woman at a movie theater washington state---then took off. police were called to the theater late last night. they say the woman was watching the movie 13-hours when she was shot in the stomach. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. officer think the suspect was intoxicated when the gun went off. they are still looking for the shooter. a former oklahoma police officer convicted of sex crimes has been sentenced to 263-years behind bars. 29-year old daniel holtzclaw was sentenced yesterday afternoon. a jury convicted him last month on 18-charges including four counts of rape and several other sex crimes that happened in a low-income neighborhood.

if you don )t want to drive in the bad weather - uber says its drivers are committed to safety and will be on the road statewide - unless a travel ban is declared. they say due to the )state of emergency surge pricing will be capped at a certain point... and proceeds will go to the american red cross. riders are asked to be mindful that trips will take longer if the roads are a bit rough. as hampton roads prepares for potential severe weather, triple-a is offering tips to keep you safe. one thing you can do to get ready for the snow is get a winter car kit together. triple a recommends a few essentials, like a flashlight, flares, a first aid kit, and water. and before snow falls - there are things you should check before hitting the road. also be sure to keep your gas tank relatively full to avoid ice getting in the tank and fuel lines.

justin anderson took his off- road wheelchair and put a snow blade on it. anderson says the chair has on-the-fly tilt so he can adjust the height of the blade as he pushed the snow. he says his community supported him with his struggled with brain cancer and having to have his leg amputated and this is his way of giving
