it's wednesday, january 27th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." the standoff between armed protesters and authorities in oregon turned bloody. one person is killed when the fbi and state troopers close in on the leaders of the week's long occupation of federal lands. fox news is getting dumped by trump. the republican presidential front-runner says he is not going to take part in the cable channel's debate ahead of the iowa caucuses. and tragedy in indiana. a beloved principal puts her life on the line, pushing young students out of the way of a school bus, before it hits and killed her. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york.

i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the leaders of the armed group occupying a federal wildlife refuge in oregon are under arrest. the situation at the wildlife refuge itself remains fluid. the fbi and oregon state police stopped the group on a highway near burns, oregon, shots were fired and one member of the militia killed and another wounded. andrew denver of our portland station koin joins us on the phone from burns. andrew, what can you tell us? >> reporter: ammom bundy and some of his top ranking officials left the refuge late tuesday afternoon for a scheduled meeting in john day, a town about a hundred miles north of the wildlife refuge. that is when federal authorities made their move. one man was killed and eight others were arrested. reports are suggesting that lavoy finnegan, arguably the number two guy in all of this, was the one who was killed, but that is yet to be confirmed by authorities. i can say that finnegan has said

than go to jail. the militia arrested including ammon bundy and his brother ryan, and cox and payne and joseph donald o'shaughnessy. pete santelea was already arrested and streaming on his youtube page but he is not accredited to his youtube page with any media affiliation and often referred to as bundy's right hand man. jon ritzheimer another one involved in the occupation is in. all of the arrested are facing federal conspiracy felony charges. as for the rest of the militia believed to still be occupying county judge is asking them to leave peacefully. them to surrender without incident is unclear. one thing important to understand in all of this is

frequently left the refuge coming and going as they pleased so it wasn't out of the ordinary for them to think they could get in a truck, leave for a meeting and come back. they have done that several times the last couple of weeks but this time, the fbi shut them down. still an active situation here. >> andrew denver in burns, oregon, thank you for bringing us up-to-speed. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will have the this latest on the arrest of the leaders of the oregon wildlife refuge occupation. republican front-runner donald trump plans to skip tomorrow's gop presidential debate. it is the final gop debate before next week's iowa caucuses without trump, seven candidates will take part. the debate is being broadcast by fox news. trump says he has issues with fox moderator megyn kelly. don champion is here in new york with more. >> reporter: a series of war had

republicans will finally start voting on who they want to be their presidential nominee. the latest escalation and tensions came after fox news released this press release tuesday saying, in part, we learned from a secret back channel that the ayatollah and putin both intend to treat donald trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president. the statement set the republican presidential front-runner off. >> when they sent out the wise while ago done by some pr person, along with roger ailes, i said bye-bye. >> you've called women you don't like fat pigs. >> reporter: just yesterday, the billionaire candidate took to instagram, asking his followers if he should participate in yet another debate moderated by her. >> trump is not used to not

truth is he doesn't get to control the media. >> reporter: in a statement, the network says trump is still welcome at thursday night's event and will be treated fairly. >> this is all about his not being willing to defend his record. >> reporter: locked in a tight battle for first place, ted cruz is now offering to debate trump one-on-one. >> 90 minutes, you and me, mono mono, lincoln/douglas style and if that scares you, then we can do an iowa town hall. >> reporter: with trump's absence, seven gop contenders will pa part in the seventh gop debate. instead of attending the debate, trump says he, instead, will be holding a fund-raiser for veterans and wounded warriors. >> don champion here in new york, thank you, don. democratic presidential hopeful bernie sanders is scheduled to meet with president obama this morning at the white house. the white house says there is no formal agenda for the meeting,

from vermont has become a surprising factor in the democratic nominating process. a milwaukee man is under arrest. after the fbi foiled an alleged plot to attack a masonic temple. the fbi says sammy mohammed hamzeh had been under surveillance since september. he told fbi informants his group planned to shoot everyone they saw at the temple and hoped to kill at least 30 people. he was arrested monday by undercover agent after he paid for two automatic machine guns and silencers. he is charged with gun possession. two people were killed and three others wounded when gunfire broke out at a homeless camp in seattle. it's unclear what triggered last night's shooting. one victim died at the scene, another at the hospital. seattle police say they do not believe the shootings were random. >> we do have at least two persons of interest. we believe this was a targeted incident.

point. >> one of the victims remains in critical condition. police believe the victims were targeted because of who they are, not because they were homeless. president obama was briefed on the potential threat of the zika virus. yesterday, the world health organization predicted the mosquito-transmitted virus would spread to almost all countries in the americas, including the u.s. symptoms are usually mild, but the virus has been linked to birth defects in brazil. the president called for the development of tests, vaccines, and treatments. the two anti-abortion rights activists charged with making those undercover videos of planned parenthood will turn themselves in. david delidel and sandra meredith face charges of tampering with governmental records, a felony. they made an undercover video accusing planned parenthood of illegally selling fetal tissue for research. a grand jury found the organization did nothing wrong. the texas teenager who used a so-called affluenza defense

time lapse video from the coast guard shows it was ten minutes before it was swallowed by the sea. a crumbling cliff creates evacuations. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the san diego union tribune says a report of gunshots at a navy hospital led to a nearly six-hour lockdown. workers at naval medical center san diego evacuated with their hands above their head. an employee reported hearing at least three gunshots yesterday morning. military police found no evidence of a shooting. the cleveland plain dealer reports the city fired six officers for their role in a deadly chase. six more officers are suspended and another retired. in 2012, officers fired 137 shots into a car following a high-speed chase, killing both unarmed people inside. one officer was indicted for manslaughter, but was acquitted. the indianapolis star reports a popular principal died

witnesses say elementary school principal susan jordan pushed students out of the way of a bus before it struck and killed her. two 10-year-olds suffered serious injuries. the driver and 25 students were aboard when it suddenly lurched forward and jumped the curb yesterday afternoon. >> i'm very close to the situation. very hard to talk right now. so we mourn. >> the school cancelled class today. police say the crash is under investigation. the "omaha world herald" reports a funeral home fire injured three firefighters and one of its owners. heavy fire engulfed the funeral home early yesterday morning in omaha, nebraska, causing parts of the building to collapse. a witness described what she heard and saw. >> you can hear the fire blazing and you could feel the vibration of the fire. it was very intense.

working with the funeral home employees to remove bodies of the deceased. the cause is under investigation. "the san francisco chronicle" says an evacuation order due to a crumbling cliff is causing mixed emotions among people who live there. the cliff in pacifica, south of san francisco, is falling into the ocean and homes along the edge are crumbling. moving trucks were in and out all day, but some are determined not to leave. the cliffs are being eroded away by intense waves fueled by the weather phenomenon el nino. still ahead, trooper struck. dash cam video captures an officer being hit by a car as he was making a traffic stop. your "freedom" may only go as far as your oxygen tube. on the cbs "moneywatch." sales of apple's iphone hit a bump. jet blue's cabin gets a makeover. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. china and shanghai composite fell this morning but other stock markets in asia got a boost after wall street's rebound. tokyo's nikkei rose more than 2% to finish near its two-month high. hong kong's hang seng added 1%. oil prices jumped 4% yesterday. the dow gained 282 points. the s&p rose 26. the nasdaq gained 49. trouble may be brewing at apple. apple says it expects sales of iphones to decline in the first quarter of this year. in the last quarter of 2015 during the holiday season, apple sold 74.8 million iphones. that is record but it is the slowest rate of growth since iphones were introduced in 2007.

over 8.5% from january to march. weight watcher's stock is soaring. thanks to oprah's weight loss. the stock jumped 20% yesterday after a new commercial starring winfrey aired. she said she lost 26 pounds on the weight watchers plan and ate bread every day. winfrey owns about 6.5 million shares of weight watchers so that means she made about 12.5 million dollars on paper. jetblue is resigning its cabins of its fleet to include free wi-fi system will let flyers stay connected gate-to-gate. jetblue says the seats will have more leg room and power outlets and more ports. the updates will take about three years to complete. last weekend's big snowstorm hit broadway's box offices hard. saturday's performances were cancelled and attendance for the week was down by over 83,000. grosses for the week ending on sunday were down 1.3% from the
