this morning. i'm allison kropff. and i'm ian reitz. we're on top of breaking news right now in south tampa. where police are investigating after they say a man shot at officers, forcing them to shoot back,

it happened on cherokee avenue..that's not far from himes, just south of gandy. 10 news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live there. sarah, a police spokesperson says the officers had a close call and were forced to pull the trigger. yes, this man shot at them twice as soon as they pulled up to a house on this street. the first time the gun didn't go off, the man went back inside to reload or grab another gun then fired at the officers again -- this time barely missing one of the officers and hitting a protective shield he was holding. holding. it all started at 3am when officers came to this house at 3312 cherokee for a domestic dispute between the man and a woman who lives inside. after the man shot an officer's shield, the officers shot back-- killing him in the front yard. the woman who was inside wasn't injured in the shooting and is expected to be ok. but officers tell us it's scary how close

working to find this out now- how many officers on paid leave after this shooting live in south tampa, sarah hollenbeck, 10 news wtsp happening today. tampa city council will be discussing ways to make sure towing companies don't haul away your car when they're not supposed to. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live along south howard in tampa... emerald...this has been a huge problem in that area. yeah, and city council is saying enough is enough. tampa has a law on the books that says tow companies aren't supposed to tow away cars from places like bars and restaurants where people have probably been drinking...but it was happening anyway...until a 10news investigation brought the problem to the city's attention. - our stories showed that last year more than 270 cars were towed from one particular plaza along south howard...one of the city's most popular

a texas police officer is facing murder charges for allegedly pursuing and killing a teenager while off duty. police say the incident all began when the officer suspected the teen had broken into a car. friends and family of jose cruz cheered and released balloons into the air...following the arrest of farmers branch officer ken johnson wednesday night. the mother of the 16-year-old, he's charged with killing, broke down in tears. johnson was off duty sunday when he says he spotted cruz and another teen breaking into his car at an apartment complex. authorities say the officer chased them down in his personal vehicle.. eventually shooting both at a nearby gas station.. the other teenager hit is expected to survive. merrick garland, the man president obama nominated to the supreme court, will meet with senators today on capitol hill. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he won't get a hearing anytime soon. but some gop senators have said they'll speak to garland. garland is known for overseeing the federal government's

city bombing. if approved, he would replace justice antonin scalia, who died last month. after a several big wins on tuesday...some g-o-p leaders are still fighting the possibility that donald trump may eventually be the g- o-p candidate. henry barbour, a senior republican national committee member, says trump quote "doesn't deserve to be president." trump says if the party tries to block him...there would be riots. even though the billionaire is the republican frontrunner, ted cruz and john kasich say they will fight for delegates to the end. five deputies in north carolina have been suspended without pay for not taking action at a trump rally in fayetteville when a protester was punched. remember this video we showed you last week. a man was charged with assault for hitting a protester in the face. the sheriff says the deputies there failed to act in the situation. search and rescue will be out again this morning for a man who disappeared in lake thonotosassa. the hillsborough county sheriff's office believes the 24-year-old man, who doesn't know how to swim, panicked after jumping off a boat

preserver. they say he went underwater and never re-surfaced. dive teams and a helicopter with infrared technology spent much of the night trying to find him. if you've been waiting to see what the future of the st. pete pier will look like, we're expecting to see it today. the pier design team will unveil updated renderings to city council during a special workshop at 8:00 this morning. city architects say this phase of the pier development has been about creating and refining designs that fit within the city's budget. city council members will share their input after the designs are presented. architects will make refinements and wrap up this phase of the process in april. construction on the pier will start in 2017. 10 news will be at this morning's workshop. this evening on 10 news at 5:00, a look at possible tweaks to the pier design you voted for. frank sinatra junior, who was known for carrying out his father's legacy has died. sinatra junior was scheduled to

mahaffey theater tonight in st. pete. his family says sinatra died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest while on tour in daytona beach wednesday. when sinatra junior was 19, he was kidnapped and held for ransom. later on in his career, he worked as his father's musical director and conductor. sinatra, jr was 72 years old. a lot of reaction this morning following the sinatra junior's passing. music performer, tony bennet tweeted out, "i am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of frank sinatra jr and send my sympathy to tina and nancy and the sinatra family." actor seth macfarlane tweeted,"frank sinatra, jr. was a friend to family guy, and a friend to me. i'm saddened at his passing, but grateful to have known him. rip, frank." a major highway in texas is closed this morning as flooding continues to plague the south. the closure could last into next week as a river there is expected to crest today or tomorrow. this is video out of orange where i-10 is shut down and thousands of homes are at risk. already more than 10-thousand people have been forced out of their

reopened. it's been shut down for 29 hours for crews to examine power cables. inspectors found 26 areas where cables were damaged or frayed and need immediate repairs. on wednesday, hundreds of thousands of metro riders were frustrated. d-c's metro system is the nation's second-busiest commuter rail service changes are on the way to how cars brake in the future. the u-s government and several automakers are expected to announce today that automatic emergency braking equipment will be in most cars by 2022. some cars already have this feature. automatic emergency braking uses radar, cameras and other sensors to see things that are in your way. your car will slow or stop if you don't react. firefighters in tucson, arizona were battling a fire on when they found five puppies sleeping on the front porch. crews had contained the fire to the inside of the home, and they were able to move the puppies to safety. firefighters don't know what caused the fire yet, but the homeowners are getting help from
