news. new tonight, the news edge at 11:00 starts right now. this is fox 5's news edge at 11:00. thanks for staying with us, burglars were hitting houses in broad daylight in takoma park, maryland. now police are trying to stop the trend. fox 5's audrey barnes talked to officers and residents about how they are making sure they are not the next victim. nicole, who asked us not to use her last name knows exactly how thieves broke into her home. >> my daughter was cooking and the house, something burned. the house filled up with smoke, so she opened up the windows and left it cracked. >> a thief got in through that open window, took the family's laptop and fled. similar crimes have been happening all over takoma park. 14 break ins last month. most of the thieves got in
through open windows or they broke them to get in. but at least two burglars went in through the front door. >> the kicking in of the doors during the day. they are going in, targeting electronics and things that they can sell. >> that's a good boy. >> councilwoman thinks the family pet makes her home less attractive to thieves. she is also urging her neighbors to look around their homes to see where they are vulnerable. >> even if they kick through the door, it's going to get met with a chain. they won't be able to breakthrough at the door. >> takoma park police will come out to your house and do a security check for free. they focus on those areas that thieves target. >> we start the inspection from the perimeter. we look again at the security lighting. we look at the windows. we look at the types of locks you have on your doors. the type of door. we make recommendations. >> recommendations like getting to know who belongs in the community and who doesn't. >> when you have a neighborhood like that, where neighbors talk to each other,
those are key things that reduce the crime of burglary. >> nicole has taken security at her home a step further. >> i put my alarm system every time i go out and even if my kids are home, they put it on, too. >> police believe at least a handful of the break ins are related. since most happen between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., they'll have plain clothed officers out during those hours looking for suspicious activity. audrey barnes, fox 5 news. metro workers doing maintenance work near the metro station found the body of a man early this morning. metro says the man did not apore to have been hit by a train, but he was found near the third rail which carries power. an autopsy is being performed to determine how the man died. police have not identified the victim. the execution of troy davis was one of the most controversial in recent memory. davis was executed after being convicted in 1991 of murdering
an offduty police officer. but several witnesses had since recanted their testimony. >> to me, i think it was a lynching done behind closed doors. >> i feel that it is time for a change. this shouldn't happen no more. it's 2011 and we need to step up to the plate and fight for what is right. >> while supporters are grieving davis' death, the victim's family say they finally have peace. >> an outpooring of support from the human rights campaign from president obama tonight. the human rights campaign hosted the president at the d.c. convention center for its annual dinner. the president campaigned for same sex couples. but some wondered if he would ever get it done. now with the repeal of don't ask, don't tell, hospital visitation rights for same sex couples, the hrc is happy with the president's work. >> it is fair to say that as a community, we have accomplished
more in the last two years than we have in the previous 40. president barack obama has stood with us. ladies and gentlemen, this is our moment to stand with him. >> president obama addressed the crowd at tonight's event and told them he would push to end the defense of marriage act that legally defines marriage as between a man and a woman. >> gay service members can get married on base by military chaplains. the news edge is everywhere at 11:00. the pentagon issued new guidance today, saying chaplains can perform the ceremonies in any state that recognizes same sex unions. chaplains can opt out if it goes against their belief. russian nationalists disrupted a gay rights demonstration in moscow today, causing tempers to flair. about 40 people were taken into custody. authorities are still trying to figure out who was part of the rally and who tried to stop it. allegedly threw tomatoes and waved insulting posters at
demonstration participants. a fun ride on a fer ferris wheel became a scary experience. a small plane smashed into the attraction. the kids were stuck for 90 minutes and the two pilots had to wait for almost three hours before crews could get them out safely. thankfully, no one was hurt. the university of maryland won top overall honors in the u.s. department of energy solar decathlon. the competition picked solar powered homes all around the world against each other. the homes are on display through tomorrow. it is a marriage proposal you are not likely to forget. one woman's happiest moment at the happiest place on earth. gwen. >> we had cloudy skies today and some had to deal with the wet weather. how long it will stick around and the question is, when will it warm up? i know, it's chilly. we'll have details coming up after the break. stay with us.

look at our five 5 doppler radar shows we still have some rain fall over many of our areas and pockets. but good news is, the clouds have really hung around and so have the cooler conditions. let's go to our weather maps and take a look at our cooler temperatures. we have 48 degrees at dulles. 52 to the south in fredericksburg, a little warmer. 50 at baltimore and 51 degrees at annapolis. well that cooler air sticking around, we have a ridge of high pressure that is pushing in a little bit of cooler air that is moving in. and a frontal system that doesn't want to go anywhere too soon. that's helping to create wet weather we are having. it will eventually move out. by the time we get into monday, it will move into the southern portion of new england and start to see some improvement. into the course of tomorrow, however, expect to be in the
