fast. we had a pit thing that went awry earlier in the race but we worked our way back and had a great racecar and won the race. >> matt: southern 500. you had a hendrick car battling you for the restart. tony stewart, two champions. then you had to throw in fuel milal, lot of different drama coming down near the end. >> it was a lot of drama. fuel mileage race, when you see the 14, you always second guess yourself. he is so good at it. i was really concerned. i was just pacing myself in the mirror on what he was doing. hoped i saved enough and i felt like i did a good job and certainly did but there were hungry drivers outs there. tony, kyle, a lot of guys that want to win the race. special to me. the race is so special, so great. darlington is awesome racetrack. and happy mother's day to my mom, my wife, mother-in-law, all the mothers out there. storm a nice day to chill out and savor this great victory. >> chris: iconic names pulled their name to victory lane at darlington.

>> chris: our aerial coverage here in darlington provided by directv. that is the victory celebration for jimmie johnson. 56th cup win for him. alone on the list, eight all-time moving ahead of rusy wallace. and a big 200 for hendrick motorsports. tony stewart who never led in this race, but had a chance late in the race to hunt down jimmie johnson. congratulating jimmie and team hendrick. our steve byrnes caught up with tony stewart. >> steve: well, tony stewart, you guys had to overcome a lot tonight. did you run out of fuel on the final restart? >> yeah, i did. it was, i had hit the fuel pressure light had went down, or the light was blinking when we got one to go. and i had to go down to the apron. caught on the back stretch and we got past the center three and the light was down

to 20 pounds again. laid down on the front stretch and we lost second because of it. pretty happy to come out of here with a third tonight. really proud of hendrick and everybody at hendrick motorsports. they deserve this 200th. >> steve: thank you, tony. >> thanks. >> chris: checking points. we have been running the results of the race on the crawl. greg biffle the points leader coming in. tightens up a bit with matt kenseth two behind. jimmie johnson skyrocketing um. after all he has been through from the start of the year with the daytona 500, the appeal. excellent position to get that win. >> michael: that shows why they won five championship in a row. they have overcome a lot to be in contention for not only making the chase, but they have the speed of that car to win the championship again. >> chris: with michael waltrip, chris myers. 51. you see kurt busch as the race winding down. this brought out the last caution here. ryan newman in the car right behind. 39. >> michael: ryan gets hit when he slows down to avoid kurt busch. really, that wasn't kurt's fault, it was just a racing

accident late in race. spun out. another crew member, one of ryan's crew members comes over to kurt busch's team and starts voicing his displeasure. then on pit road, watch this. >> chris: this is after the race is completely orve. the drivers aren't necessarily involved. although we did see newman go over and talk to kurt busch. remember, it was a year ago after the race one of those in your face with kyle busch and kevin harvick. this time it's team members of kurt busch, and paul ryan. >> michael: that is just southern 500 emotion. like you said, we saw it last year with harvick and the other busch. now tonight the crew guys are getting into it. the drivers had a conversation after the race. ryan and kurt and they seem fine with what happened. the crews got involved. >> chris: meanwhile, michael, denny hamlin finishes second behind jimmie johnson ahead of tony stewart. steve caught up with denny. >> steve: denny hamlin, finishing second tonight. describe your evening. >> you know, relatively

nascar on fox. it's marathon race. remember, kevin harvick who edged out dale earnhardt jr. in that race last year. the all-star race next saturday night on speed. that is at 7:00 eastern. you will see all the stars come out and shine in charlotte. carl edwards, winning that race last year. worked his way up to finishing seventh this time around. victory lane. for continuing race coverage from here in darlington tune in to "victory lane" on speed. rick hendrick, you heard him mention those lost including his son ricky. a promising driver in 2009. 2004. on this date, adam petty died practicing for a series race in new hampshire. miff son christopher, rick hendrick did a lot to get the fox crew out to his funeral in february. we appreciate that. there is a lot more to rick hendrick than just 200 victories.

ross. what went wrong here? >> they played this game just like every other. close, one-goal game and biting your nails until the very end. that's the thing with playoff hockey. there's nothing quite like it, especially a game seven in the national hockey league playoffs. every save is magnified. if you lose, that finality can be brutal. caps trying to avoid that tonight. they won their last game seven against the bruins. the rangers were up 1-0 when marion, the shot is blocked, but gets it past and new york is up 2-0. you think this thing is over, right? wrong. just like they have done all year, the caps have come right back. shot past hendrik lundquist. that was 38 seconds later. final minute, they pulled braydon, but they never got another good shot on goal and sadly, this one ends 2-1 in favor of new york.

they celebrate and move on to the finals. sadly for the caps, it is all over. this great run has come to an end. lindsey murphy was in that locker room and i know it's not an easy task, how were the boys at madison square garden? >> i have been covering this team for three seasons and have never seen the capitals this down in my three years of covering them. they lost some tough games. it was a tough one. a will the of these guys feel like there's unfinished business. it shouldn't have ended tonight and shouldn't have ended at all. here's the guys after the game. >> what can i say? we do our best. it's probably the best team i play and you know, the atmosphere and everybody -- it's unbelievable to play. >> it's the worst feeling i've

android market. you'll find it on our website, the dc police searching for a man who viciously attacked another man in an alley. it happened thursday behind 1418w. street. the victim was coming home from work and walking through the alley to get into his building. surveillance video captured what happened. the suspect went on the attack, hitting the victim hard in the back of the head and then kicking him. >> he had a broken jaw. he has also multiple fractures in his face. he had stitches in his forehead and stitches on his chin and i believe there's some teeth that are loose. >> >> the victim had reconstructive surgery this morning. police are offering an award. to fairfax county where police are looking for two men who beat, robbed, and sexually assaulted a 50-year-old woman.

it happened early friday morning at the hbrook school in maryfeld. the victim was beaten severely with a brick or rock. anyone with information is asked to call fairfax county police. a supermarket could be shut down because of flooding. authorities say a sewage line failure at the supermarket on south glee road caused severe flooding inside the store yesterday. the store will remain closed until further notice for repairs and restoration. police officers and their families are remembering the brave people who have given their lives in the line of duty tonight. families posted photos of fallen officers on the wall of the national law enforcement's memorial today. it's part of the national commemoration of police week. at the white house, president obama and vice president biden welcomed several officers who performed heroically on the job. >> and frankly, they don't ask for a lot. they don't ask for a lot of credit. they don't go to work planning to be heros, they just do their

president obama and presidential hopeful, mitt romney, are wrapping up a busy political week. republican mitt romney was the commencement speaker in lynchburg, virginia today. he told the crowd of about 6,000 graduates and their families that america values work, education, and personal responsibility. but his biggest applause line came when he affirmed his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. in d.c., president obama used his weekly radio address to urge congress to take steps, he said would speed up the economic recovery. he targeted republicans hopes for tax cuts on higher income earners. >> we tried their ideas for nearly a decade.

and it didn't work out so well. we can't go back to the same policies that got us into this mess. we have to move forward. >> the president also called for an end to tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. there's still a long way to go before the conventions. next on the primary schedule, nebraska and oregon. voters head to the polls on tuesday. president obama is getting a special endorsement from betty white. while the 91-year-old actress typically keeps her views to herself, this year she is getting political and throwing her support behind president obama. white likes how the president represents the u.s. the endorsement comes after a big star studded fundraiser for obama at george clooney's house in california. the historic week for president obama as he becomes the first president to voice the for same-sex marriage. what might come as a bigger shock is all the money lobbyists from both sides of the aisle have been spending on the issue.

fox's robert gray has more. >> reporter: for some washington lobbyists, the issue of same-sex marriage is number one. in just the first quarter of this year alone, groups like the american civil liberties union and the leadership conference on civil and human rights contributing to the $1.5 million spent in lobbying for the senate version of the act. provide federal benefits for same-sex couples, but not recognize same-sex marriage. >> there has been a strong effort to put forth a measure that would take back the defense of marriage act, but in particular, there has been a movement to really compel the republicans in the house to come around and get educated on this issue. >> in 2011, roughly $12 million was spent on the house and senate versions of respect for marriage act. tobacco lobbyists spending $17 million that same year.

gun control lobbyists spent $260,000. unlike other issues, gay marriage seems to be gaining in popularity. >> this is something that they really feel like there could be a ground swell of support to help pass this. >> gop presidential candidate, mitt romney, accusing president obama shifting the attention away from the economy. only time will tell if the president's latest decloration will translate to more votes come november. one thing is for sure, the president's decloration of support for same-sex marriage already giving his campaign a boost. he raised $15 million at the home of george clooney on thursday night. in new york, robert gray. the archdiocese of new york cardinal delivered the commencement address at catholic university today. reenforceing catholic teachings that a marriage is solely between a man and woman. >> that union, that sacred union of husband, wife, baby,

mother, father, is so essential to the common good that it's very definition is engrained into our interior dictionary. >> cardinal doe dolon is earning a doctorate. a big drop in gas prices overnight. prices fell 3 cents a gallon in d.c. to $3.91. at one point, it was almost $4.20. the avenue barrage price in maryland is down to $3.68. down about 30 cents. drivers in virginia paying about $3.59 a gallon. plenty of drivers are looking for ways to save at the pump. does it make any difference whether you buy brand-name gas or discount. >> reporter: chris says he usually tanks up at the shell or chevron, not the costco around the corner. why spend 20 cents more a gallon than necessary? >> i don't know.

i tried the gas and it burns just as efficiently, but you know, it's a name like anything else. >> joe was filling the tanks at a nearby costco as part of his route in which he hits many different stations. >> go to shell, chevron, you know, got customers anywhere from 7-eleven to costco to phillips. >> when he was finished, a motor back to the shell refinery and got more gasoline for costco. which begs yet, is there any difference between the gas you buy? well yes and no. >> it's like medicine. you got your branded medicine and then your generic. >> the difference is the branded cleaning additive each company puts in its gas to scrub fuel injector jets. it also helps the engines valve seats.

chevron, for example, calls their heavily advertise attive tech-ron. less expensive gas, the same sort of additive, but generic. we went to the mechanical engineering department where he spent a year studying motors and fuel, and he also drives. >> i have a jeep cherokee from 2003. >> what does he do when he fills up? the same thing joe velardy does his. >> i buy gasoline typically at a lower cost station five times and then on the sixth time, i'll go to one of the name stations. >> and from the university of laboratory to the gas pump itself, you can easily and less expensively protect your vehicle with simple attive that you can pick up. all you have to do is poor it into your gas tank while
