they are all going to have a head-on collision on the intergalactic beltway. it will happen in four billion years and the milky way as we know it will cease to exit. so you start with three spiral galaxies, the milky with a galaxy, the andromeda galaxy which is 2.5 million height years away and another galaxy called m-33 that is part of the system. they are going to collide. they are going to take about two billion years to pass through one another, get reoriented into one huge elliptical galaxy. big change on the cosmic scene. >> why are they being drawn towards each other? >> yes. gravity is pulling our galaxies together. we have known that for a while that andromeda are moving
6:50 am
towards one another. about six million miles aday. >> and it will still take four billion years. >> yes. >> so is the earth in peril? >> no, it is not. the scientists said yesterday that they know with certainty this head-on collision is going to happen but space as big place. there is a lot of space in between the stars. so all of these are going to come both. they'll pass through one another including our sun and the solar system. but there is going to be a rearrangement of where we are in the cosmic scheme of things and we'll probably end up in this elliptical galaxy farther away from the center than we are at the -- >> you were saying they were going to pass through each oosm they are not going to be colliding. >> won't there be some commissions? >> they will morph into, under the graver stational pull, into this huge elliptical. you will start with three

spirals. >> we have a photo from earth. >> they did some great graphics. >> it won be a fete owe. >> a depiction. this is hua might be looking at from planet earth if you are looking out at the cosmos, is that right? what are we looking at there? >> what you are seeing is nasa did a great job in putting together some art graphics and a video that shows a computer simulation of all of this happening over the timespan to compress those four billion years of the approach, collision and then the two billion years to get that big huge elliptical. >> james cameron now has new inspiration. >> you say earth is not in peril. but our position will change. that could cause some problems. >> in four billion years from now, sun will be undergoing some major changes. earth will be too hot for life as we know it to exist on it. and the earth is going to be a very, very hot cinder because of changes in the sun but at
6:52 am
least the planet and the sun and the solar system will survive this great change in our local universe. >> my bills are due june 1st. do i need to pay them? >> a little while longer this. >> even though we are talking about billions of years from now, isn't it weird to think that at some point, earth will cease to exist. >> and the sun and the solar system. the thing is, for summer, when people go outside and enjoy the dark skies and camping areas, they see the faint band of the milky way. it is one of the arms of our galaxy. we are a big spiral and they won't be able to see that. >> real quick, lunar eclipse monday morning. >> looking toward the west about 5:30 in the morning. it way be rising but the moon will be undergoing a partial eclipse. we won't be able to see see the main portion of.

it it is only 37% of coverage of the moon. >> greg, we love having you here. >> my pleasure. >> you can read his blog as the sky guy. go to myfoxdc.com and he knows everything about all this kind of stuff. >> we try. >> we'll talk to you soon. maybe next week about the transit of venus too. >> sound good. if you have a question you want answered, go to myfoxdc.com and click on the weather tab. can you also uphood your video question. we may play it on air. please don't be depressed by what we talked about. this is four billion years away. >> so today, three heads were better than two. >> i would say so. >> all right, julie wright. take it away. thank you on all our wazers. we love hearing from you. g fro heavy volume reported here northbound i-59 in lorton. expect these delays to carry up
