and fast. this is the time lapse of the storm moving over the oxen hill area. the big question, are we in the clear? >> reporter: we're doing well considering the front moved through to the east. and let's look at our radar. we have some precipitation and we're not dealing with strong storms across the area, and we're going to get to some clearing once this dissipates into the course of tonight and let's go to the weather maps. talk about winds and extremely strong. 58 miles per hour wind gusts at reagan national airport; 47 at dull else and bwi thurgood marshal, the winds were at 35 miles an hour. and it was a very hot day. temperatures into the 90s, warm, unstable air mass for the frontal system to come though and once it did, things changeed drastically. once the front passed, it dropped to 64 degrees and in an

to and fox 5s audrey barnes spoke with residents in one neighborhood that saw every kind of storm damage in a matter of a few blocks. >> reporter: several people living near bellville boulevard and cavalier drive are without power after today's bad weather, the latest in a series of storms that thrust them into the stark dark and some have had enough. >> we heard a nap and a pop and then we came to our front window and looked out and saw a streak of fire in the middle of the road. >> reporter: when she looked out of her front window and saw the power line in flames, she braced for the worse. >> and there are a couple us, like our neighbors have power and we seem to get affectid and think the last time we were out for eight days. >> reporter: people living here say trees around here routinely come down in large storms and today's was no exception. that is why linda raised home from the center to check on her property. >> and the wilson bridge should
be here. >> reporter: not before capturing dramatic video of the storms over the weather water. >> -- the water. >> and i saw the blackness in the sky and i realized that my house being immediately over the river, this was a danger to me. >> reporter: the neighbor got caught in the storm, too. >> i was at the nationals game. >> and we have high winds. >> everyone got swamped. >> foggy. >> reporter: the good news, his dog was fine back at the house and neighbors were hurt. no word on when they will get the electricity back, but we have seen a utility crew in the area. back to you. >> thank you, audrey. a similar scene in the district where the wild weather left a swath of damage. a huge tree came crashing down on a parked car at 38th and appleton northwest. as can you see, it took power lines, rather, down along with
it and that storm knocked out power in upper northwest. at this hour, about 38,000 pepco customers are without power and that is down from 54,000 dominion virginia, 8,000. and 15,000bge in the dark. >> a rare storm in parts of new york. a national weather service confirmed that two tornados touched down, one in queens and another in brooklyn and now, of course, the cleanup. there are no reports of serious injuries. the storms downed trees and power lines and damaged homes. workers spent this afternoon cleaning up debris. and following a developing story tonight. friends of a young d.c. mother who was murdered are expressing gratitude that police made an arrest in the case. phillips' body was found stuffed in a duffle bag last month. fox 5s john henrehan has the
latest. >> reporter: 22 when the 22- year-old phillips went missing on july 30th after dropping her younger daughter at a child care center, some of the neighbors at the project in southeast washington knew right away something was terribly wrong. >> my daughter woke me up and said sharon was missing. that was a hot feeling. i jumped up and i was like that can't be true. that is not her. just to up and leave like that. >> reporter: her body was discovered a couple of days later in swan creek in the fort washington section of prince georges county. it was homicide by asphyxiation, according to the medical examiner. her apartment was apparently broken into and ransacked around the time of her disappearance. the detectives in prince schemes -- georges county arrested 31-year-old joseph f. jones of mountain lake place in capitol heights. investigators believe he was an acquaintance of the victim. >> and she was on her way to a
car auction in fredericksburg, virginia, and we believe that she was carrying $3,800 in cash at the time she disappeared. investigators, detectives in the prince georges county homicide unit determined the motive to be robbery in this case. >> reporter: police say the victim's dna has been collected from a van owned by someone else who was an acquaintance of the suspect, joseph jones. jones is charged with first- and second-degree murder. a balloon is still attached to her apartment door with condolence messages scrawled on the door. >> and i wish it hadn't happened, but young girls here today need to be careful of who they pick their friends with. >> reporter: the security video from inside the day care center captured the last moments phillips and her 2-year-old daughter were together john henrehan, fox 5 news. the gay marriage fight goes viral in maryland, thanks to a scathing letter from an nfl
player. at the center of the controversy is maryland delegate emmit burns, a democrat from baltimore county. he asked the owner of the baltimore ravens to silence linebacker brendan iandanagio for supporting gay marriage rights in maryland and he support delegate burns an outspoken and we should say a profanity-laced letter saying in part as i suspect you have not read the constitution, i would like to remind you that the very first, the very first amendment in this founding document deals with the freedom of speech. he also said i can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero affect on your life. they won't come into your house and steal your children. you know what having these rights will make gays do? full-fledged american citizens just like everyone else with the freedom to per sue happiness and all that entails. we reached out to delegate burns and he would not give us
a comment. let's expand with the story now. the discussion about the controversy. noah brand is the editor-in- chief of the good men project, an online magazine fostering a discussion around manhood and the question, what does it mean to be a good man? he joining us by skype. good to you have here. >> thanks for having me. >> you bet. >> let's begin with your reaction to the letter to delegate burns, urging the ravens to silence the outspoken player because of his support for same-sex marriage. what is your take? >> i think that is a pretty low thing to do to someone operating a private business for someone in governmental position to tell them to order their employees not to express their opinions. >> he said look, as a football fan, maybe we should keep this separate. do you think perhaps part of theup ease with gay marriage from sports fans is what, maybe a wrestling match over masculine identity?
>> absolutely. our writer liam day published an article, as a matter of fact, today, in which she argues that we imagine masculinity and homosexuality to be opposed to each other, to be somehow enemies. i think delegate burns saw a football player, a macho person speaking in favor of gay marriage and felt as opposed to gay rights, he was entitled to this football player's support. he's a masculine guy and he must be on my side of the homosexuality issue. >> and as know, not the first nfl player to come out and support same-sex marriage. >> certainly. and it's something that people so as contradictory. if yew a big tough guy, you must have a problem with hono sexuals. obviously, that is not the case. mr -- benahos case or other
professional athletes and guys in other occupations in our country and history. >> let's talk about the letter y. do you think that letter, in particular, touched a nerve making it go viral? >> first, obviously, because it's funny. it's easier to forward something to all of your facebook friends that makes you laugh. and because it expresses a genuine and uncompromising anger that i think a lot of people feel over what is fundamentally a civil rights issue when the basic minity of all americans is still upped debate in 2012. a lot of people are fired of -- tired of pussy-footing around that issue and want to just, frankly, speak out and say this is bigotry, this is wrong, and i'm ticked off about it. i think that andrew is what the letter tapped into and that is why it's popular. the fact that he uses profanity
exceptionally well. >> certainly, it's a controversial issue, and i know, like yourself, a lot of people see this as a civil rights, a human rights issue, but not everyone does and that include says delegate burns. again, we have reached out and we're waiting for the response. again, noahh brand, thank you for waving in. >> my pleasure. thank you. the nationals eighth pitcher straussburg has been the talk of baseball with his impending shutdown. the team decided to alter its plan and dave ross has the details. hey, dave. >> reporter: the surprise is not necessarily that steven straussburg is shut down, but rather that it happened earlier than everyone expected. straussburg was supposed to make a final start this wednesday in new york but that start, like the rest of his season s new history. so last night became the swan song for his 2012 campaign, and it was one he would l forget. matching his shortest outing of the season, going three innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs against the marlins.
