>> ♪♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 11:00. >> ♪♪ >> right now at 11:00, the bitter cold temperatures are hanging around. but get ready for some winter weather that will affect the weekend shopping frenzy. >> and a local teenager sees this in the house. >> a deer in our living room and i need to know where the keys to the guns are so that's a lot to take in. >> we'll tell you what happened next when the news starts right now. >> ♪♪ >> we're going to get things started with a winter weather alert. it is another bone chilling night out there. if you have big weekend plans be prepared it is going to get messy out there. >> gwen is in the weather center with an update on the winter weather that is heading our way. hey, gwen. >> hi there, you're absolutely right. we know a lot of people are out trying to get all that

taken care of this week but this weekend is really going to be kind of challenging. so, as we look at temperatures right now, it is bone chilling cold out there, shawn. you chose the exact right words. 29 at d.c. this hour. 26 at baltimore. 30 at annapolis. 26 at dulles. 28 at fredericksburg. and we've got wind chills jet stream to the south of us allowing that cooler air to just settle in and make itself right at home. so, overnight lows tonight into the 20's and we do have those wind chills that are actually in the teens and the single digits so here's what it feels like if you're stepping outside right now. feels like it's anywhere from about 14 to even up to 20 -- 29 degrees more to the south of us but in the city and surrounding burbs we're talking temperature in the teens and single digits. bundle if you you're headed out. winter weather alerts they are in full force. winter weather advisory and freezing rain advisory for our areas. we're talking in the freezing rain advisory about less than a tenth of an i

possible in the winter weather advisory about a tenth of an inch or more and this is where we're talking in the onset especially in the winter weather advisory maybe a little bit of snow very briefly but primarily to the north and northwest close to mason-dixon but this is becoming and will become i should say a freezing rain event overall. we're going to see a mixture of snow, rain, sleet, freezing rain altogether and then by the time we get into saturday into the mid morning hours, we expect to see all of this changing into rainfall because we're going get an influx of warmer air. so here's a quick look at the next couple of days for you. 49 degrees for tomorrow but we're warming up to 60 by sunday. your full forecast just ahead. tony. >> all right, gwen thank you much. there are a lot of events going on around town this weekend not to mention it's the last weekend before christmas. >> that's right. the stores and malls will be hopping. fox5's lauren demarco is out at tysons corner tonight. how are folks getting ready, lauren? >> reporter: wel

here at the mall because tomorrow's the last saturday before the big christmas weekend. so, everybody is trying to cram things in because weather may be throwing a wrench into the works and as you said there are some other big events going on. in fact, tomorrow morning in arlington national cemetery thousands of people are expected to gather for wreaths across america. we spoke to a member of the board. >> last year it was actually 70 degrees. we had 70,000 people show up. it was incredible. way more than we planned on. usually it's about 40,000. >> reporter: what are you expecting for tomorrow. >> hopefully we can get the 40,000. weather is a little rough but the soldiers sailors airmen marines coasties that all fought and died in there fought in worse weather than we're going to have to take care of us. >> reporter: spokesman dan meade wants people to come out for the event's 25th anniversary and they need volunteers to place wreaths at nearly 245,000 headstones. he says many hands m

work but if you're heading out think layers and take metro. they don't want people on the roads and there won't be any parking available anyway. now again, we are live on out here at tysons corner center and there have been people making making that mad dash trying get some of their shopping done before mother nature brings in that wet mess tomorrow. >> i wanted to head out tonight and get all my shopping out of the way so i bundled up in my coat and here i am. >> reporter: happy to be on tv. >> yes, of course. >> i changed my schedule so i start shopping exactly at 9:30. so, i'm just going to grab something to eat and take it home and just have a nice cup of tea and relax. >> reporter: avoid the roads and everything tomorrow. >> oh, absolutely. and i got some desert just to make sure if i'm stuck at home i can have a nice cup of coffee. check their batteries, check their fluids and carry an extra blanket. that's what we always do good. >> reporter: advice. that salt truck driver says he is ready and happy to do his part so that he can make sure things are smooth for other drivers. vdot will have 1100 pieces of equipment on the roads. we saw several out tonight. maryland state highway and ddot are also implementing their snow plans. as we traveled around you could see the pavement had been pretreated on roads like 270 and the gw parkway as early as yesterday and once this wintry mix begins officials are asking that you stay off of the road until it ends. if you have to be out there, be very alert and aware because the cold weather that we saw since thursday has really lowered the pavement temperatures which means there's expected to be a lot of ice, icy patches especially on-ramps bridges overpasses so give yourself plenty of time, plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. live in tysons corner, lauren demarco, fox5

>> montgomery county police are cracking down on drunk drivers this holiday season. tonight they deployed this breathalyzer truck. officers were use it to help determine if drivers are impaired. they say drunk driving continues to be a big problem especially around holidays. >> the north carolina man accused of firing shots inside ideation pizzeria is still in jail following a hearing today. edgar welch pled not guilty in federal court. a judge ordered him held until his next court appearance in january. welch is accused of firing shots inside the comet ping-pong pizzeria in northwest. he told police he was inspired by false internet conspiracy theory that claimed the restaurant was at the center of a child sex ring organized by hillary clinton's presidential campaign. and rain credible story out of frederick maryland where a teen thought an intruder was breaking into his house when he heard his front door being kicked in. >> instead he found himself face to face with a deer right in the middle of his living room. fox5

more on the encounter that was caught on camera. >> reporter: it's believed this deer picked ryan manchester it's home out of all the other ones on the street for one very specific reason breeding season before it decided to just barge through his front door. >> we had just cut down our christmas tree like the day before so we're pretty sure that a doe had sprayed our christmas tree and that it smelled that scent. >> reporter: 17-year-old ryan manchester was certain intruder had just broken through his front door while he was home alone one december afternoon. >> it sounded like someone, like a person was taking a sledgehammer to my door so i was actually, you know, pretty terrified. you can see the holes in the door from where the antlers hit. >> reporter: what he saw when he came around the corner he captured on his cell phone. no, not an early christmas visit from one of santa's reindeer but he was after the family tree. >> and it was just totally behind the tree in this area right here. it

over. >> reporter: ryan says for several minutes its more than 100-pound eight-point buck flailed around his living room tearing it apart. >> he was trying to jump through all the windows so there was actually bleeding everywhere 'cause he had cut himself up. i knew it was trying mate so i was afraid it was going to become territorial and try to hurt me. >> reporter: that's when he decided to call 911 and then his dad at work. >> there's a deer in our living room and i need to know where the keys to their guns are. so, you know, that's a lot to take in. >> reporter: ryan says animal control officers weren't able the come right away and the damage was getting worse. so he grabbed his father's 9-millimeter handgun and fired off two shots hitting the deer in the head and chest. it died on his living room floor. animal control officers arrived a short time later. >> the only concern i had is that we don't hunt so i wasn't sure he knew where on the deer to shoot it to make it come down quickly because we didn't want it to be in pain but he did a great job. >> reporter: insurance estimates about $4,500 in damage. by

>> investigators cleared a fairfax county sheriff's deputy of any

wrongdoing following a deadly shoot at inova fairfax hospital in august. police say javon knee martinez a patient released was having a psychotic episode. he attacked and injured someone. when the deputy arrived martinez charged at him with a spiked metal sign post. that's when the deputy shot and killed him. the sheriff's office is still planning to conduct its own internal investigation. president obama held his last news conference of 2016 today. >> he spoke with reporters for nearly 90 minutes. some of the issues that dominated the news conference include the in zero y-the election of donald trump and russia's suspected hacking of the dnc during the presidential election. the president stopped short of saying vladimir putin orchestrated the hack but he did say the highest levels of the kremlin authorized the hack. >> what i can tell you is that the intelligence that i've seen gives me great confidence in their assessment that the russians carried out this hack. i'd make a

teamed up with make a wish midatlantic to make it all come true. >> i'm kaheem. i want to be a superhero. >> reporter: a five-year-old boy from owens millions transformed to a superhero friday. kaheem was diagnosed with leukemia but at this moment he fought another battle, being a superhero. >> what's going on? how you doing. come on down young man. >> reporter: super kaheem started his day at fox5. he arrived on a montgomery county fire truck where he was greeted by his favorite superheros. >> hi buddyism his next stop, the national harbor where santa was stuck on a ferris wheel. >> can you see off in the distance there, somebody needs our help. he's stuck. >> santa. >> thank you. >> reporter: another mission complete with the help of tucker. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: from there it was off to the capitol where he received a special message from speaker paul ryan. super today home's next mission was stopping an all too familiar

there is some wintry weather on the way. is it clear? i'm not sure if it is. >> i don't know. gwen, what's -- >> we have some clouds outside right now. we don't have any precipitation that we're anticipating just yet but it is on its way because we do expect it to start to move in in the overnight hours, guys, so, are, but it's cold out there, bone chilling cold as we said earlier with some significant wind chills. let's take a look at our maps and just show you some of the numbers right now. 29 degrees at d.c., 25 at gaithersburg, 27 at frederick, 26 in baltimore and that's the same for dulles and 27 degrees at winchester. and the wind chills here's what it actually feels like if you're stepping outside. anywhere from about 14 degrees. we've got 15 at gaithersburg. 18 at quantico. 17 at winchester and this is just the beginning of the overnight hours so it's going to get even colder as far as the overnight is concerned. so, keeping a very close eye on what's happening in the skies. there we go. you can see all the cloud cover and all the winter weather. there's been major snowfall that's moved over the upper

and all of this is moving its way toward the east. also, some of that precipitation heading its way up from the south also. so, a couple of things that are going to be impacting us and as a result, we are under some advisories and alerts for tonight. so, here we go. we do have a freezing rain advisory an winter weather advisory in place. this in effect tonight right through until 9 o'clock on saturday. we are looking at winter weather starting off maybe a little bit of snow in the very onset but very briefly, if anything in snow would be more closer to the mason-dixon line north-northwest. other than that we're talking a combination of freezing rain, sleet and rainfall and that is going to kick and then we're going to see it all change over into rain about mid morning on saturday because we're going start to get some warmer air coming in. freezing rain advisory as well and it will become fairly widespread as we get closer to dawn. less than a tenth of an inch of freezing in

ice is concerned and a little bit more than that up to maybe about a tenth of an inch for the winter weather advisory area. so, this is what is happening this weekend a combination of things. we've got the rain snow wintry mix as far as saturday is concerned changing all to rain. then we have a frontal system coming through on sunday and that's going to be all rain. behind that, though, we're going to see some colder air. so, we're warming up ahead of the frontal system on sunday. we're going to be into the upper 40's on saturday into the low 60's on sunday. unbelievable. so here's a look at our snow cast map for you. sleet and freezing rain as i mentioned closer to the mason-dixon could see a ltle bit of snowfall but most of that will be to the north and northwest. futurecast showing early morning hours we're dealing with all that mix and then it gets itself out of the way and changes into rainfall. and that's what we're talking about. seven-day forecast, though, is looking not too bad with mixed conditions after all of this. back to you. >> ♪♪ >> hi i am r
