goin morning. >> all right. >> aside from that at 4:30 breaking news out of montgomery county. this is exactly what maureen and i were just talking about, 355 in gaithersburg shut down both directions near chestnut street. the crash happened just after midnight this morning. now fox5 is told at least one person has been taken to the hospital. still no word on their condition. montgomery county police say wires are down in that area and the roadway in the area of route 355 again could be closed through 8 o'clock this morning. >> ♪ >> now to a big story we're following this morning in a last minute switch senators decided not to vote on the gop tax reform plan last night. putting off more votes until sometime today. republicans are retooling the entire bill. it would be the first major rewrite of the tax code in more than 30 years. republicans tout the fact that it cuts the corporate tax rate and offers cuts for middle class families but democrats say they plan to hit it hard with amendments this morning. >> has called this bill in his words, a great big beautiful christmas present for the american people. well, i
american people remember to keep the gift certificate. >> now, republicans say their goal is to still get to the president's desk by christmas if the senate passes its version they still have to reconcile it with the house version and those bills are still very far apart. another white house staff shakeup may be coming. the white house is reportedly discussing a plan to replace rex tillerson with cia director mike pompeo. pompeo would be replaced by senator tom cotton a republican from arkansas. the new york times reports the change will happen within weeks. >> ♪ >> 4:32 right now. the senate ethics committee has opened an inquiry into groping allegations against senator al franken. six women have come forward accusing him of inappropriately touching them during campaign events from 2003 to 2010t senator franken's office says he's committed to cooperating with the ethics investigation. house minority leader nancy pelosi is calling on john conyers to resign. the move was in major
from her position days ago although conyers is facing several allegations of sexual misconduct, his attorney says he has no plans to step down. instead, he plans to fight those accusations. the 88-year-old is resting at a detroit hospital due to stress. >> ♪ >> follow-up at 4:33. matt lauer apologized yesterday morning for his inappropriate sexual behavior at work. lauer issued a statement that read there are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain i've caused others by words and actions. to the people i have hurt i am truly sorry. lauer also denied some of the oe said others were mischaracterized. but he did admit that there is enough truth in the stories to make him feel embarrassed and ashamed. now meanwhile music mogul russell simmons is stepping down from his companies after accusations of harassment and sexual assault. the def jam recording founder is accused of force jenny lumet

of rain shower activity so that's why people are waking up with raindrops on their car but that's done. you won't need the umbrella today. get the rag out wipe the car off real quick and you're good. >> who does that? let the wind take care of it. >> i had an old car where the windshield wipers didn't really work so i had to get out there and -- >> goodness. >> satellite and radar show if you're able to snap a picture of it snap a shot of the moon. it's big bright and beautiful this morning. i believe it sets early this time of year so only up in the sky for another hour or so. we've gone quiet along the eastern half of the country. much like we were earlier in the week. again, it was just kind of last night that we had that hiccup with some of that shower activity coming through. but again, we're in the clear as far as that goes for the rest of the day. 50 degrees outside right now. not a bad start at all. dulles you're cooler, 42. bwi 43 degrees. suburbs always chillier than the city this time of year. grab the jacket when you head out the door to work or school. 51 degrees sunshine by 10 o'clock.
4 o'clock 56 and we should squeeze out 57, 58 degrees sometime later on this afternoon. so not as warm as the past two days. we were 60 degrees yesterday. we were of course 70 the day before that but december not starting off too bad. 58 degrees though we do think that will change heading into next week. more details on that to come but again about 58 degrees for daytime high cablely breezy from time to time. >> all right, thank you mike and erin you've been watching the roads now. that 355 accident. tell us what's happening there. >> that's right, maureen. 355 is a mess this morning up in gaithersburg. it was a crash as a result of some downed wires. 355 shut down in both directions between chestnut street and folks corner avenue. downed wires there. authorities saying it could be through about 8 o'clock this morning and i don't know if you've ever traveled through gaithersburg but a lot of people take 355 to get around 270. be mindful that's going to be a nightmare later this morning. we'll keep you updated. coming up on fox5 news morning. >> wal-mart facing backlash this morning for a controversial

lacked a captain co-pilot or both. it was all because of a glitch in the company's scheduling system that let pilots take days off in the last two weeks of december even if there wasn't another pilot available to operate the flight. >> wal-mart has removed a controversial t-shirt from its web site. the item was finally removed from wal-mart's web site today after the radio tv digital news association sent a letter to the company. now wal-mart explained that the shirt was being sold by a third party vendor and it clearly violated the company policy. >> colin kaepernick's protest during the national anthem are earned him the muhammad ali legacy award from sports illustrated. the 30-year-old is the youngest person to win the award. kaepernick started take agony during the fashion an is 2016 to draw attention to police brutality and social injustice. other players have since joined the poet. kaepernick has been out of the nfl since march and last month he filed a grievance against the

just outside of dover delaware around 5:00 p.m. social media was flooded with reports that it was felt as far away as boston. earthquakes are rare right here in the midatlantic region of the east coast but so far no reports of any damage. >> still didn't feel that earthquake. the kennedy center honors this weekend. celebrities honored include gloria estefan norman lear and lionel richie. back in august the white house canceled the reception after controversy that some of the honorees planned to skip it in protest. president trump says he wants the honorees to be celebrated without any political distraction. >> good morning toy. thank you for joining us. >> that's right, today is friday december 1st. let's say it's the first day of friday -- first day of december,s are friday. >> uh-huh. >> and we have more sunshine. >> yeah, we're back to sunshine today. we had some clouds, some rain last night. we're getting back to the good stuff today. by the way did you all feel the earthquake. >> no. >> i didn't either. >> the entrepr earth moves whene enter the scene. we make our own. >> we make our own quakes.

chilly especially in the suburbs. in d.c. i expect temperatures to drop a little bit. laying in bed right now still going to need the jacket as you head out later on this morning. 58 degrees in washington, 56 for quantico, 66 in manassas later on today. occasionally breezy. what about the weekend? well, saturday a little cooler than today at 54. thanks to a few more clouds around but we're back to sunshine sunday 58. whole weekend should be dry. not until the middle of next week do we have our next chance of seeing some rain. all right, that's weather. more details coming up but first we have traffic. for that we turn to erin como. hey, erin. >> 4:47. we've been tracking this breaking news out of gaithersburg, downed wires impacting a route on 355. a car completely sideways into those wires that are down. we have crews working hard to get that cleared. again, this is both directions of 355 shut down in gaithersburg at the intersection of chestnut street. crews telling us it could be out there through at least 8:00 a.m. this morning so take 270. plan on another alternate. if you have any questions about getting around at erin fox5 d.c. on twitter but
looking so great this morning. we'll have more on that with your next look at traffic. >> ♪ >> 4:47 and we've got a news alert for you this morning virginia commuters are aware during next week's rush hour along i-66 you'll see some changes on the road. >> fox5's annie yu live in the news room now with more details on what you can expect. good morning, annie. >> reporter: good morning, ladies. we've been talking about this for a few weeks now. new rules are coming to i-66 inside the beltway for those who take the beltway to roslyn on 66 your commute is about to change. they're enforcing the express lanes. they'll go live on monday. there are new rules for tolls and hov hours so take a look at your screen. here are some of the major changes. the new system covers a 9-mile stretch between i-495 and lee highway near the route 110 and roosevelt bridge split there in rosslyn part of vdot's effort to manage the traffic congestion during rush hour. the
9:30 a.m. the major difference from the highway's current structure is that people driving alone can now use it if they're willing to pay so up until this point solo drivers haven't been allowed to enter during those peak hours as its lanes have been restricted to carpools only so now again solo drivers will pay a toll and must have an e-z pass. cars with two or more occupants can travel for free but their e-z pass must be on the hov setting. motorcycles are exempted from the tolls and do not need an e-z pass and good news here is that there are no tolls for outbound traffic on i-66 and no toll for evening inbound traffic. now, if you don't have an e-z pass, which is very important, i learned the hard way, your license plate will be photographed and you'll be fined. coming up at 7:00 this morning we'll be speaking with someone from vdot to learn more pout abt the big changes. back to you guys. >> annie thank you. do you consider yourself a foodie? get your appetite ready for a shop sip event.

>> 4:53 and to prince george's county now. an update this morning on the simmering disagreement between governor larry hogan and county executive rushern baker. things reached a boiling point yesterday. governor hogan blasted county leaders for not taking the investigation seriously. yesterday the naacp wrote a letter to hogan pleading to meet with him. the county executive said the governor's comments were wrong because the county has 60 days to respond to the grade fixing report. the meeting between hogan and the naacp is set to take place in a couple of weeks. >> also in prince george's county, a shocking crime. this man is accused of impersonating a police officer and raping a man he had pulled over. police say michael bell stopped the man in langley park early sunday morning. he flashed a badge offed
