i'm pat kiernan with a new york 1 minute. republican frontrunner donald trump squared off with surging rival ted cruz at the latest gop presidential cruz brought up new york city as he questioned trump's conservativcredentials. trump defended the city, and wondered if cruz can even be president since he was born in canada. four of the connection with an alleged gang rape in brooklyn have been released, though they still face charges. prosecutors had to let them out of jail because an indictment has not yet been filed. investigators are still collecting evidence in the the number of substantiated complaints against city cops took a major jump in 2015. the civilian complaint review board says more video evidence is one of the reasons it was able to validate 70 percent more complaints last year than in 2014. and ben mcadoo is set to meet reporters today for the first time since being named the new head coach of the giants.

new york city was a surprisingly hot topic at last night's republican presidential debate, as the event turned into a battle between the top two candidates. donaltrumpnd texas senator ted cruzereamong the seven republicans who took the stage in south carolina. trump is still leading most national polls. but cruz has been polling well in iowa, which holds its caucus on february 1st. and that led to a number of clashes, including one over what cruz calls trump's "new york values." "everyone understands that the values in new york city are socially liberal, pro-abortion or pro- gay marriage, focused around money and the media. not a lot of conservatives come out of manahttan.""new york is a great place, it's got great people, it's got loving people, wonderful people. when the world trade center came down i saw something that no place on

more beautifully, more humanely than new york." the two men also sparred over the canadian-born cruz'seligibility to be president. trump said democrats are planning lawsuits to keep cruz from the white house. cruz said any lawsuit against him would not succeed. one four of five teenagers accused of raping an 18 year old woman inside a brooklyn park have been released while prosecutors work to gather more evidence in the case. the boyse stilfacing rape charges. but under the law, they had to be released from jail if they weren't indicted within five days of their arrests. prosecutors have six months to file an indictment or the case will be dropped. 15 year old shaquell cooper is being held on an unrelated assault charge from last year. the teens are accused of attacking the woman in osborn park last thursday. but defense attorneys say cell phone video shows the woman laughing and smiling as the teens approached the attorney for 14 year old

denzel murray says the teen should be allowed to live a normal life for now. "i'm of the belief that you have to hold your head high, particularly if you're innocent, and live your narrative. i don't think he should shy away from doing anything that's important, such as school and being a family member." prosecutors are still waiting for the results of toxicology reports and dna testing. police are also searching three of the boys' the city has seen a huge spike in the number of substantiated complaints against cops. numbers from the civilian complaint review board show a 70 percent jump in proven complaints between 2014 and 2015. thirty percent of complaints submitted in december 2015 were validated. that's the highest monthly rate in the review board's 23 year history. accordinto thedaily news, thboard credits stronger investigations and the availability of more video evidence for the spike.
