((walter all eyes on the tropics... a storm spinning in the gulf... has floridians on edge... the new five a-m advisory should shed some light on the latest track. dave's here with that. ((jen hovering off our coast... it's time to stock up and prepare... from sandbags to supplies, what you need to do... to stay safe. ((walter and... they're our best friends... but there's one thing you absolutely, positively ?shouldn't share with your "fur babies." the new pet trend, that surprised... and disturbed... researchers. epstein. the weather is the big story this morning... let's go right to dave.
5:02 am
((wally)) with the storm inching closer to the gulf coast, it's "crunch time"... time to start prepping... and get a family storm plan in place. rain and flooding could be big concerns for our area... so sandbags and other supplies, are in high demand. senate race. republican marco rubio is running for re- election. originally, he wasn't going to... but after losing florida to donald trump in the presidential primary, he had a change of heart. today, he's battling someone a lot like trump... a businessman named "carlos beruff"... who spent eight-million dollars of his ?own money, to fund his campaign. and on the democratic side, the battle will be between representatives patrick murphy and alan grayson. murphy has a ?lot of support from the d-n-c... with endorsements from president obama, vice president biden and senator harry reid. (wally another interesting race today... in south florida. representative "debbie wasserman schultz" is running for re-election on the democratic side. a few months ago, this would have been considered a shoo-in. but that was when schultz was still the chairwoman of the democratic national committee. she had to resign from that post last month... after emails leaked, indicating shultz and members of her staff showed ?bias against bernie sanders. law professor "tim canova" is challenging her. and fittingly... canova got a big endorsement... from bernie

(jen voters across the state will also consider a proposed amendment to the florida constitution. if approved, amendment four would give tax breaks to home and business-owners who install and ?mainatin solar panels. solar advocates say: it would make solar energy for homes and businesses more ?affordable. but critics say: some of those tax breaks, could be ?unfair. the proposal needs 60-percent approval from voters, to pass. (wally a major step forward... in the fight against the zika virus. researchers have identified ?two ?drugs... that could potentially ?stop the virus's devastating effects on the body. (wally) the news comes at the perfect time... as the bay area prepares for what could be an awful lot of rain... wet conditions are prime for mosquito breeding... which could raise the zika threat. but fox-13's haley hinds aren't a ?cure, they are... a game-changer. e news on the zika virus...reach... and devastating health effects... finally -- a glimmer of hope.this is probably i think going to be a virus that is cured sooner than later a research team from florida state and johns hopkins unversities, as well as the national institutes of health... found that nicolsamide an inexpensive drug commonly used to treat tapeworm... could stop the zika virus from replicating in the body. it showed no danger to pregnant women in animal studies. they also identified a drug still being tested to treat liver disease... could prevent zika from killing fetal brain cells. the fact that there's already clinical information on these compounds is a major benefit.we can effectively, in the future, kind of fast track these drugs through clinical trials we should be happy with things findings but we should continue working at full force to find additional drugs that can work the breakthrough comes days ahead of the arrival of a storm...
5:26 am
shape for mosquito breeding after the storm, if there has been wind damage to roofs to screens certainly when you think of gutters for example where there is water standing in gutters, all of those things can contribute to the increased risk of getting bitten by a mosquito to prepare... the city of tampa is buying 10-thousand more mosquito dunks... each one capable of killing off mosquito larvae for 30 days. feeding tampa bay is handing out 15-thousand cans of mosquito repellent to needy families... and if you visit busch gardens, sea world, disney world and universal ... you'll now find plenty of free "epa- approved" insect repellent.
5:27 am
(wally) the tapeworm drug haley mentioned is already f-d-a approved, so essentially, it could be prescribed right now. but more tests are needed, to see ?how it could actually be used to treat the zika virus. ((jen)) forget "cuckoo for cocoa puffs." one guy is primed for pie! the daring pizza place... and it's all caught on camera. ((jen plus... heartbroken hollywood... the sweet, touching tributes this morning, for gene wilder... that'll leave fans misty. the roast looks good dad. how good? 162 likes. did i get any retweets on those green beans?

((walter)) so, with the storm out there, possibly heading our way,t's time... to get your preparations and plans in place.((jen)) gonna include sandbags... a vital tool, in handling what could be a lot of rain and flooding. fox-13's shayla reaves is at a sandbag location right now... at the jackson heights community

((walter the time now is 5:??. and also in the top stories: police are searching for this man. he broke into johnny's pizza on 28th street north earlier this month. the man came in through the roof... then dropped down from the ceiling. at first he looked in the register... but didn't find any cash. he then headsed to the kitchen... but it doesn't look like he found anything he wanted their either. if you know anything call police. ((walter another chance last night to learn about one of the most hotly-debated topics in the bay area... the "tampa bay express plan"... or "t-b-x," as it's called. the project would add express toll lanes to 50 miles of i-4
5:36 am
that could be great for ?drivers, it could also change neighborhoods that border those busy roadways, significantly. the t-b-x plan would also replace the northbound howard frankland bridge, and re-design the interchanges for i-275 and state road 60... so lots of people have a stake in this. the next public information meeting is thursday evening, from six till eight, at the seminole heights library in tampa. ((walter memorial observances continue today for the longtime religious and community leader passed away last week, at the age of 97. he was the founder of st. lawrence catholic church in tampa, and headed that church for nearly 50-years. there's a visitation today, from noon until nine p-m, at the church. the funeral mass will take place ?tomorrow morning, at 11-30... also at st. lawrence. ((jen)) home and business-owners aren't the only ones preparing for the tropical depression. the ?bucs are, too. in fact, they're concerned enough about the threat of bad weather...

gene wilder is being remembered this morning. the man famous for playing willy wonka... along with ?so many other memorable characters... passed away sunday, from complications of alzheimer's. he was 83-years old... known for countless movies, like: "stir crazy" and "blazing saddles," he's long been a hollywood favorite... loved by all generations. and the outpouring on social media, is nothing but love. (jen mel brooks... with whom he collaborated on many films, called him: "one of the truly great talents of our time. he blessed every film we did with his magic, and he blessed me with his friendship. (jen) we love our pets, it's true. we'd do anything for them... and vice versa. (wally) but as close as we are, there's definitely something we should never share with them. laura's here with the story. (laura) sharing food, sure... the bed... okay... but researchers say: people are also sharing their pets' ?medication... and that... can be really dangerous. (laura scientists in texas definitely weren't expecting this when they started their

about it... but when the results came in, they noticed a trend. four-percent of people were ?taking their pet's medication... and sometimes, their pet wasn't even ?sick. they went to the vet explaining symptoms that ?they had... and planned all along to take the animal meds ?themselves. doctors say: that's a terrible idea... animals metabolize things differently than humans do, and their drugs are formulated differently. (laura) the american veterinary medical association was already alert to ?painkiller abuse... were pilfering pet ?antibiotics, too. they understand: it can be hard to get into a doctor... or to afford certain medications... but their advice remains the same: keep your ?paws
