new this morning... a tampa destroyed by flames. this happened on east 12th avenue. firefighters could see smoke and flames coming from the roof of the single-story wood frame home when they arrived on scene. it took them nearly an hour to put out the fire. fortunately... no one was hurt. the cause is still unknown. what was supposed to be a meetup to sell an item advertised online... ended in now, the sheriff's office is searching for the killer. the buyer and seller agreed to meet outside this family dollar on combee road sunday night. things went south when the supposed buyer tried to steal the item... when they ran off... the seller and their friend jeff morrow chased after them. that's when the thief opened fire. 21-year-old morrow was pronounced dead at the hospital. thong detsouvanh owns the marathon gas station to the north of the family
up after the shooting... investigators haven't said what item was up for sale. whatever it was... it couldn't have been more valuable than a human life. this is an unsettling reminder of the dangers involved with meeting strangers... whether it's for a sale or even a date. many law enforcement agencies have offered up their properties as safe places for meetups. looking for trouble... they're unlikely to even show up. the killer is still on the loose this morning. if you know anything about this crime... call the polk county sheriff's office. for a sixth day... a protest continued in east tampa. people are outraged over the death of lavonia riggins. protesters blocked part of 78th street last night... deputies we're on hand -- the same agency they're protesting. demonstrators reject claims made by the sheriff's office-- which says riggins was reaching for his
riggins-- who was later found to be unarmed-- was shot once by deputy caleb johnson. the state attorney will decide whether deputy caleb johnson will be charged. deputy johnson has been placed on administrative leave. happening today: funeral service for a tampa police officer. officer fred arnold will be laid to rest this morning at life point church. services begin at 11 and will conclude with the rendering of final honors. officer arnold died late last month during an off-duty diving trip in nevada. after 7 weeks of summer vacation... congress is heading back to work-- and it couldn't come sooner. one of the major issues they'll face... funding to combat the zika virus. from pinellas to sarasota county. several beaches have posted no swim advisories. they've tested positive for high levels of bacteria after hurricane hermine blew past the area. sarasota county lifted its advisory for siesta key late yesterday afternoon. but there's still one in place for north lido beach. many chose to stay out of the water over the labor day weekend. red flags flew from life guard stands warning people to the potential danger
bacteria comes from pet waste and storm water run off. it can be dangerous for the young... elderly... and people with weakened immune systems. many people we spoke with this afternoon said they weren't going to take any chances. other beaches that have the no swim advisories include "honeymoon island", "sand key park", "indian rocks beach" and "redington beach" at 182nd avenue west. the effects of hermine are also being felt on lido key in sarasota. what remained of their beach has now washed away. for years lido beach residents have complained that a
working with the army corp of engineers on a long term plan for about two decades. that plan would provide renourishment every five years and after repeated storms. right now residents say it's badly needed. a smaller restoration project took place nearly 2 years ago. that was done to replace sand that was washed out from debbie. it cost about 4 million dollars months. lido beach residents are waiting on the state's final approval of the long term fix plan. that is still in the works. losing someone you love can be hard... but when you have something physical of theirs to hold onto-- it can be a little bit easier. this morning... a pinellas county man is searching for the owner of an american flag after finding it on the side of the road. ((vanessa thanks, shayla. like shayla said... flood water is receding in pasco county. but thousands of residents there aren't in the clear just yet. emergency crews passed out 660 cases of water to families in badly evacuation areas yesterday. many of the properties in these neighborhoods use both well water and septic systems. when flooding is this bad... those wells can easily become contaminated. pasco county is not under a boil water advisory at the moment... but officials say if your water is supplied by a well and you experienced flooding... it's a good idea to boil your water and make sure to have your well water tested. pasco county just released its preliminary damage assessment from
structures are destroyed.. nearly 300 have major damage.. nearly 200 have minor damage.. in all, 322 structures were affected by the storm. hernando county also released its damage estimates .. 2 structures were destroyed. 18 had major damage. 179 had minor damage. the total damage estimate is nearly 7-point-8 million dollars. meanwhile... emergency management teams are holding a disaster relief session in citrus county today. officials with the county... american red cross... and the salvation army will be there to it's being held at the lecanto government complex in room 280... from 1 this afternoon until 7 today. another
the time now is 5:??. let's get you up to the minute on today's top stories: police are looking into the strange events... that led up to a man's death in bradenton beach. police received a call about a naked man running around coquina beach sunday morning. that man was taken to the hospital. about 5 hours later... officers found that man's clothes on the to the body of samuel collins. police say both men have had issues with drugs. they call collin's death suspicious... and believe he either drowned or overdosed. polk county deputies are searching for the thieves who made off with a lot of firepower. the 4 men stole 30 handguns and 10 semi-automatic rifles sunday morning. this happened at "titan arms" on south florida avenue in lakeland. they pulled up in a pickup truck... ripped off the burglar bars... and smashed a window to get in.
a gray ford f-150... extended cab with chrome wheels. north korea fired 3 more missiles into the ocean... landing less than 200-miles off the coast of japan. the country has carried out ten similar tests this year alone. they're in violation of countless u-n security council resolutions. at the same time... president obama was meeting with leaders at the g-20 summit in china. u-n officials will discuss this latest test in a closed-door meeting sometime today. hurricane newton packed a powerful punch on mexico's western pacific coast... bringing heavy rain and high wind to the area yesterday. newton is now on it's way to cabo san lucas.... on the southern tip of baja california. people there are taking no chances-- setting up sandbags and boarding up windows. weather officials say the hurricane's wind is up to 85 miles-per-hour.
