a huge loss for major league baseball over the weekend. on sunday... marlins pitcher "jose fernandez" died, after a boat crash in south florida. and jose's death hit very close to home... because he went to alonzo high school right here in tampa. fox 13's shayla reaves joins us live from alonzo high this morning... where the tributes have been pouring in.
a local rap artist is dead... after a shooting in haines city. police tell us 31-year-old "jonathan lee jordan" who went by "j.green" -- was shot along north 10-th street around 8 saturday night. it was right near "cook field" where a youth football game was being played. jordan later died at lakeland regional medical center. police haven't made any arrests. a new war is being waged... when it comes to the zika virus. but this time it's between elected officials in south florida... and the department of health. both sides have been going back and forth the past few days... over the ?location of mosquito traps where ?zika was discovered in those bugs. the mayors of miami-dade and miami beach claim the state told them to ?hide those locations from the public. the state ?denies that request. it comes as the "miami herald" is fighting in court
released... claiming it's a public health priority. meanwhile, researchers in miami are working hard on new ways to test and diagnose the zika virus. the university of miami is looking into a diagnosis test that only takes minutes to come back. right now that testing can take up to several ?weeks. they take a person's blood... urine or saliva... then mix that d-n-a with a reactive agent. the results come on a "one or two line reader"... similar to a pregnancy test. they're hoping to simplify the process so it could easily be per office or health clinic. congress has yet to act on zika funding legislation... but governor rick scott recently announced 25 million dollars in ?extra state money
local communites are fighting back against zika... by cleaning up. on saturday, hillsborough county allowed people to drop off used tires for free. and on sunday, pasco county did the same thing. people came out to pasco's resource recovery facilities.. to toss their old tires. those tires tend to be a favorite spot for the mosquitoes that carry zika, to breed in. exciting news for lightning fans. the team returns to ice... in just one day! the bolts first ?preseason game, is tuesday night. and over the weekend... the amalie arena was getting ready for the big the bolts held its annual fan fest on sunday. thousands of fans showed up... sporting all their blue and white gear. they got to see some practice sessions... and get autographs from their favorite players. the fans also got to meet some of the ?newest bolts... like about 40 prospects hoping to make the cut. and we caught up with two of the ?youngest bolts
