factor. you can see things moving just fine on the ben franklin bridge and man what difference amy few hours can make. radar tells the tale. all that rain is out of here pretty much anyhow. things are starting to cool on down. good evening, thank you for joining us. merry christmas. i'm lucy knoll land. >> let's get to fox 29 meteorologist dave warren. the start of the holiday weekend going to feel little different, dave. >> a little cooler. at least we're not talking about rain we had earlier. ultimate doppler clearing up just a little bit. not completely though. may ab few showers tonight to the south the last few hours very heavy rain that band of heavy rain right through delaware and areas in south jersey one to 2-inches of rain. but everything is calming down now a few showers right along atlantic county extending up towards long beach island through burlington county. light rain and few spotty showers to the south. wider view go from the current radar to the forecast. picks up a few showers around but it will keep the clouds in overnight tonight and again
spotty showers are possible. mainly to the south. this is by tomorrow now. so just a few shores with cloudy skies and a little cooler. but look what happens towards the evening. few showers begin to develop again as the warmer air returns. you'll feel that cooler weather tonight. temperatures are dropping to the north. they will be falling throughout the night tonight. so the warmest part of the day could be right after midnight you wake up to temperature into the mid 50's and it drops into the mid to low 50s throughout date tomorrow. 63 your high today 68. tied a record just a very light breeze out there. here's what we have coming up. again that rain clears out. we'll see a few showers will stick around. much cooler temperatures especially to the north warm weather returns as soon as the end of the weekend and we could be talking about more record high temperatures. they're all in the seven day forecast. a look at that coming up a little bit later, lucy. >> see you then, dave. christmas like we've never seen around here. one a lot of folks in the southeast no doubt want to forget. heavy rain brought flooding and mudslides states reeling from outbreak of rare december
tornadoes. 15 people have died in mississippi, tennessee and arkansas. today search and rescue teams on the ground looking for more victim. weather officials confirmed nearly 20 tornadoes touched down across 10 states and more could be on the way. >> i'm going sit in my house and think pow that. there's people that are not going to go home. they don't have a house to go to. >> some of those same weather systems are bringing much more welcomed weather to the west coast and drought stricken california the snow pack is higher than average for the first time in years. clearly that's not the snow pack there, but it's huge and a wonderful relief for residents who are still under severe water restrictions out west. back here at home, the spirit of christmas alive and well across our area with many people spending part of their holiday giving back and few causes are more worthy than helping those who have already given so very much. fox 29's brad sattin joins us from our newsroom. brad you spent the day with some of our veterans in need rt row report a great story here.
we did. we spent some time at the philadelphia veterans house which gives struggling vets temporary place to live, medical care also tries to find them work. today, though, thanks to gofundme page, a local chef an bunch of volunteers, they were treated to a very special christmas dinner. >> turkey. u.s. army veteran doris thomas were something to smile about. unexpected christmas feast. >> i had situation where i lost my home in new jersey and i'm still trying to recover. >> reporter: just last week mayor nutter announce an end to veteran homelessness in the city. resources are now available to get any struggling military vet who wants it into save housing. and while 63-year-old veteran carl miller knows being off the street is job one, the loneliness of the holidays can also be disabling. >> makes them feel like they have family again. you know, something about vets holiday come they feel lonely. when they get together, it's like, hey, we got family. >> reporter: familiar thanks in part to marco, wanted to
start new tradition where i would cook for these guys every christmas. >> this chef and elkins park restaurant started a gofundme page. raised over author's sap dollars and brought food an hundred blankets even wrapped to christmas to veterans in need. >> i don't want them to be forgotten. >> just to see their reaction to some toiletries or a pair of sock. >> to tell you the truth, i almost cried a couple of times. >> reporter: he's been where they are. >> they made a statement that they hadn't had a gift or anything like that for years. >> reporter: so while they ate, ricky and nate owen were on dish duty. after their family breakfast and opening present their dad also a veteran brought them here. >> we all hit a difficult time in one way or another. when things are going better for you it's definitely even that much more important to help others. >> making their day or even their week knowing that they think there's people out there who are willing to help them. >> reporter: carl miller knows it. his thoughts as he finishes his pumpkin pie.
>> i can kiss the chef. (laughter). >> reporter: he indeed wanted to kiss the chef. they made enough food for about a hundred people. there were lots of leftovers which means some of the veterans will have more special meals in the days to come. i'm brad sattin in the newsroom. the meaning of the christmas not forgotten tonight. >> ♪ thousands of people gathered at saint pete's square to listen to pope francis. he prayed for an end to human suffering this christmas. the pope's message included a prayer that recent u.s. backed peace agreement will bring peace to syria and libya. pope francis also praised nations that have taken in refugees this year n afghanistan american servicemen and women celebrated christmas at bagram air base. troops enjoyed a special meal at the air base while so far away from their families and friends he even santa and his helpers
brought some cheer. it's a tough time to be away from family. it can be just just as tough for the folks back at home. >> i miss them very and i wish i was there having dinner with them. >> kind of sad 'cause i'm not with my family at this time. but i have a job i have to do. so sacrifice i have to make. >> bagram air base is the largest us military base in afghanistan where americans serve alongside nato forces. a quiet christmas mass in holy place sacred to christians around the world. the town of bethlehem celebrat d wirefree answer on his christmas day worshipers made their way to the church of nativity for morning mass. traditional site where jesus was born. despite the wint sunshine festivities have been low key this year. dampened by months of israeli palestinian violence. from the birth mace of christmas to the birthplace of our nation. one local organization made up of ministers all about spreading good news and cheer this christmas especially to those in need.
boy, did they. tonight chosen 300 spent this christmas making sure families were surrounded by cheer and goodwill. fox 29's shawnette wilson joins us live from center city. shawnette. >> reporter: lucy, you've been out. of course you know that signs of the holiday are all around our city. but many people don't have shelter or food let alone a christmas dinner or a gift but tonight, a group of volunteers is making that possible. >> they was excited about comi coming. they never did nothing like this on christmas. >> reporter: josephine core and her family are getting a christmas they didn't think they would have. >> i told them they was going to a gathering and they was going out to give out toys and they was excite. >> tonight they got dinner and gifts during a christmas celebration by chosen 300 an organization that helps the homeless and children. >> it helps a lot. it helps a lot. i mean i do what i can do. but every little bit more that go along with it. >> reporter: more than 100 people showed up for the gathering on lancaster avenue in
mantua. they had a brief prayer service before volunteers put smiles on everyone's faces. brian jenkins is the expect stiff director. >> the children wake up in the morning there's no tree and no gifts to go under a tree. here at chose season 300 we want to make sure we impact these children's lives in a very significant way. >> jeff howard says chosen 300 helped him get on his feet. he just recently got a job and the organization presented him with their free month long transpass to get back and forth to work. >> there's hope. basically my job is somewhat giving back to the community, too. i help out old vets and stuff like that. >> these folks have abundance of worries. they're trying to figure out who do i pay my rent next month? how do i feed my children? how do i put clothes on their back? >> what kind of education are they going to receive? and so these folks really deal with the burden of poverty on daily bas basis. >> reporter: and two other events like this were helder held in different places in the
city. chosen 300 serves about 150,000 meals a year. lucy? >> wonderful thing. thank you so much, shawnette. this day is all about tradition. for many on the delaware river general george washington crossed part of an annual reenactment of the historic moment. >> ♪ >> everything from the firing of a cannon to soldiers dressed in uniforuniforms today reenactmens true to what happened on this day in 1776 except a whole lot warmer today. the crossing of the delaware river is a pivotal event in the american revolution. straight ahead one of america's biggest delivery companies is playing catch up on this christmas day. how fed ex is explaining the, well, the iou's under your christmas tree. a south jersey family's christmas gift exchange is anything but traditional. it is outstanding. how they're bringing smiles and cheer to dozens of other families.
♪ well, um, unlike santa claus, federal express is conceding it wasn't able to make all of its scheduled deliveries on christmas eve. so to ease some of the disappointment company employees had to work on this christmas day and they were delivering packages out there all over the place. fed ex even opened some stores so customers could pick up their stuff. it blames the delayed shipments
on inclement weather in parts of the us and last minute surge of holiday shopping it hadn't anticipated. speaking of gifts, instead of exchanging presents with one another, one local family helped bring smiles to 25 other families and fox 29's bill anderson went to camden for the tidings of comfort and joy. >> these are your secret santas. >> reporter: most of us spent the day with friends and family exchanging gifts one new jersey family decided to give up their traditional christmas and dedicate this year to helping others. >> this year we felt we want to give and the lesson is, it's better to give than to receive. >> reporter: jennifer morris is a fire marshal in camden and after conducting an inspection at ronald mcdonald house she and her family decided that rather than he can change gifts with each other, they would give them to the 25 families of sick and injured children living here. >> i can't open describe. the best feeling in the world to
see that we're making these kids happy, the smiles on their faces it's just incredible. >> reporter: ronald mcdonald house staff shared family information so the family could do the shopping and from the response it like like the presents they got were perfect. >> i think today they are building their reservoir of goodness so that on those tough days when they feel they can't take another step, that they've got a little bit bad news they can look back in their minds eye and say you know what, there are people that love me. >> i wish you get better. >> 23 members of the family gave up their own christmas to give presents to the families here at the ronald mcdonald house and all of them agree that it makes christmas this year a little bit more special. >> appreciate what you have. don't take anything for granted because you never know what could happen tomorrow. >> thank you. does you're very welcome man. >> reporter: in cam, bill anderson, happy holidays from fox 29 news. i just love that. all right. so imagine living with six different families throughout
your entire life and you're not even a teenager yet. well that's what life was like for two local children until halloween. that's when the fogle family got a little bigger and our lauren johnson shows us christmas, christmas will never be the same. >> reporter: for 11 years zach fogle was an only child. >> i wanted a brother and sist sister. mostly a brother. >> reporter: his mother robin fogle wanted something else. >> we wanted to help kids out. >> reporter: she and her husband had been faster parents for years. >> a foster parent was not good thing for me because it was hard to say goodbye. >> reporter: she thought adoption was a better option. >> when i got that call, i was like yes! so happy. almost like a pregnancy, you know, wahoo! >> katie and ben a brother and sister set -- i didn't know i had a sister until i had a visit with my mom. >> reporter: had been in the foster care system for years. moving around lot. >> um, for an estimate i think
six. >> reporter: six defendant times? that's a lot. how was that for you? >> hard. >> where are we ever going to stop moving. >> reporter: it took emotional toll on 12-year-old katie. >> did you ever get scared sometimes that you might get separated from your brother? that went through your mind sometimes? >> yes. >> reporter: did you ever cry? were you ever sad? >> i was sad. >> reporter: and do you know why you were sad? >> because i didn't think we were ever going to get a family. >> reporter: robin was hoping she would would be the last stop on their tough journey to find a forever home. >> all these kids wanted was love. >> reporter: she was ready to pour out all she had. >> i was a bundle of energy but in different ways. butterflies and stuff like that. >> reporter: everyone was nervous but excited about what could be. >> i thought they were really fun. it was very quite and we went from that to complete chaos but it was good chaos. >> reporter: after a year of adventures it's became official.
>> our adoption was finalized october 30th, and that was just an amazing day. >> reporter: just in time for the holidays. >> first christmas with adoption done. >> reporter: zach says they have big plans. >> go to the nutcracker, macy's, hershey park probably and christmas lights in allentown. >> reporter: and christmas list -- >> a tablet, um, more lego friends. >> reporter: a long list of wishes for siblings who were short on tradition. >> it breaks my heart to think they were eight and 11 and they had never ever decorate add christmas tree. >> reporter: they did it and loved it. >> what has it moment for you guys? >> that we never have to move any more. unless we're moving to a different house but we're still staying together. >> reporter: now the fogle family is finally complete. >> and i think that puts a whole different spin on our christmas.
like we are a family and we are altogether. row what great christmas for them. love that. love the temperatures because i gave up on skiing this december. i can't believe it dave. goodness. >> i'd like to see colder temperatures. like to see that ski season get underway and santa dropped off some shreds for the kids this morning. >> really? >> he didn't pay attention to the weather forecast apparently. temperatures were into the record territory today. still into the 60s but dropping overnight tonight. they will will be falling you could wake up to mild start mid 50s but it will stay there all day tomorrow. already cooling off a little point mount pocono 54 degrees. tied a record in philadelphia. set a record in atlantic city 71 in 1982 it was 70. so a record high today. no records tomorrow and no more steady rain. it's all clearing out. few showers will linger and could see a few more throughout the day tomorrow to the south. ban of very heavy rain led to flooding there in new castle county and threw south jersey this got one after the other.
heavy showers and thunderstorms that came over the same area. now no more rain but the showers will linger tonight. we'll say a cooler saturday. record high on sunday in philadelphia, 64. forecasting a high above that. so we can see another record. here's this rain tapering off and just a few showers around tomorrow. mainly to the south. one or two spots. not a completely dry day although not that said dee rain widespread rain like we had today. start to increase and fill in a bit more tomorrow night for the eagles game maybe a passing shower. this is the warmer air coming back. we're cooler tomorrow. there's the cooler temperatures. but look all the warm air lifts up throughout the day sunday. so it's cool saturday but then sunday climbing into the 60s. cooler weather comes in late sunday. that's the focus for these showers but ahead of that record high 64. we could be into the upper 60s by 9:00 o'clock on sunday night. 65 degrees. so a warm end to the weekend. some clearing.
47 will be dropping to 47 north and west overnight tonight. 55 falling temperatures it's 55 in the morning. but then it drops throughout the afternoon and evening. showers will linger a bit to the south and east overnight tonig tonight. let's talk the seven day forecast. you can see we really warm up there on sunday. 52 tomorrow. up to skate on sunday. little cooler breeze on monday that front will come through drop the temperatures down to 50. warm weather returns briefly tuesday. another storm comes in brings back the rain. brings in the warmer temperatures. it will start to feel a little more like this time of year here by the end of the week. wednesday, thursday and friday for the new year our lows are dropping down to 35. not to the freezing mark but down to 35. that will come with a few showers. only climb to frick. >> all right. let's hope, dave, that the eagles are as hot as our weather has been. >> let's hope so. >> we have a big game coming up. sean bell what you got? >> sean? >> the holidays won't be joyous
