♪ live from center city in philadelphia this is fox 29 news at 11. new plan tonight could finally spell relief for thousands of commuters across our area. it has been weeks of living through a travel nightmare waiting in long lines and crowding on to packed trains. septa now says it may finally have a fix for its defective cars. good evening to you, i'm lucy noland. the fix it's not a quick one but rider cos see a difference as of next month. fox 29's chris oh com is live at septa headquarters with what's up. chris? >> reporter: that's right, lucy. septa train commuters at least now have some answers as to when their train service will return back to normal. septa management announcing to customers today that full service should return by sometime in october. it's been a long and frustrating summer so far for septa rail commuters. >> a lot of standing room only. crowded trains and awkward

schedules. >> reporter: help is finally on the way after septa pulled a third of its train fleet 120 silver liner train cars side lined for repairs. pictures from septa show engineers now doing final testing on a potential fix of those defective cars. if all goes according to plan, repaired train cars will be fixed and phased in by the end of the month. >> we see what our customers are going through. it's nothing we ever wanted for them. >> reporter: the problems costing septa a million dollars a month. it's costing passengers lots of lot of time. >> it's been kind of hectic. everyone is getting little ant antsy. >> reporter: now september to says this train defect problem is costing the authority more than a million dollars a month. costs they'll try to get recovered by the rail car manufacturer who caused those defects. lucy? >> all right. we'll see what happens. thank you, chris. developing to night in atlantic city another casino set to close this i'm it is trump taj mahal

it is closing after labor day weekend. the news comes a mid on-going strike tropicana entertainment manages the taj mahal and it cites the strike as par of the decision to close and also says it's losing millions of dollars every month. members with unite here local 54 say no matter what happens over the next several weeks they plan to stay on the picket line. the workers walk off the job 35 days ago over a dispute over health insurance and pension benefits. republican presidential nominee donald trump opened the casino in 1990. but another billionaire eventu eventually bought it that would be cash icahn. trump owned the taj and two other atlantic city casinos but most ties by the city in 2009. he kept a 10% stake for the use of his name. that was wiped away when icahn took over in march. >> beautiful end to the week but connect we could have storms over the weekend. meteorologist kathy orr is here

with your first forecast at 11. kathy. >> good sleeping weather overnight tonight lucy that will make for gorgeous start to the day tomorrow. when you're up and at them wake up weather looking pretty good and comfortable as you hit the road tomorrow. in philadelphia waking up to 66 degrees. in allentown 64. millville 66. little bit milder in dover and wildwood with temperatures starring off in the 70s. but during the day tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. 85 degrees. low humidity with that persistent easterly wind. it will be light but it will give us bit of a refreshing air mass as we look ahead as you plan your day tomorrow, breakfast temperatures mid 60s. by lunch 80 degrees and plenty of sunshine. afternoon high temperature will be in the mid 80s but by 3:00 p.m. we'll be at 83. the dinner hour 79 degrees. and as you look ahead to the seven day forecast, it's looking pretty good for thursday and friday. the storms are mainly saturday afternoon. 93 degrees. sunday and monday looking good. and take a look at the beginning of next week even. monday, tuesday and wednesday in

the 80s. each day getting a little warm warmer. i think i'm liking august. i'll be back with more on the timing of the storms if you have plans over the weekend that's later in the broadcast. lucy, i'll see you then. >> talk soon kathy. police are hoping a grainy image helps them find the teens who assaulted a young boy. 11-year-old was just playing basketball at a playground before attacked and humiliated him. fox 29's dave schratwieser has been talking with police and local families live now at police headquarters. dave? >> reporter: lucy, parents and police calling this crime despicable tonight and urging community members around the olney rec center to come forward and help investigators identify the teenagers involved in this attack. leonard lucas took his family to play ball at the olney rec center wednesday night disturbed to find out that an 11-year-old boy playing hoops here had been chased from the courts by teenagers, stripped naked at gun point in a nearby alley and beaten. >> where are the parents?

>> reporter: police released a photo of of four teens they believe chased the young boy from the rec center courts to this alley off a street. detectives say they pulled a gun and ordered him to take his clothes off here. they took a picture of him with an iphone and then beat him. >> he must have been in absolute fear, and for that, you know, my heart goes out to him and his parents. report roar darnell lee took his son to his first football practice at the rec center wednesday night. >> we all bring our kids here in a safe environment, you know, thinking everything is safe. >> you can go that far, i mean, take some kids clothe off like that i can't assume you won't do it again where is did the gun come from? these are still kids. >> reporter: investigators for the special victims unit continue to track down leads trying to identify those suspects and hopefully make arrests soon. lucy. >> hopefully they dork thank you dave. developing right now philadelphia police are investigating a shooting in the fair hill neighborhood. it happened just before 9:00 this evening on the thee thousand block of north second street.

someone shot a man in the stomach and his arm. officers themselves rushed him to the hospital called scoop and run. he's in critical condition at temple university hospital. so far no arrests. two people are in the hospital tonight after this crash in montgomery county. emergency crews raced to the intersection of blair mill and easton roads in upper more land about 8:30 tonight. firefighters had to cut out two people had were trapped in their cars. but we are hearing their injuries are not life-threatening. and we are learning more tonight about the young father tragically killed when caught in crossfire in east germantown last week. police say 25-year-old al ford was a hard-working dad who had just left his job to pick up his three year old daughter from daycare. suddenly, gunfire erupted around him. police say two groups of men started shooting at each other on the crowded street and the bullets hit ford in his car. >> we got his daughter out the back seat before anything, though, the daughter was still strapped in. it was horrible because so many people was around seeing that

horrific incident you know what i'm saying it was just tragic. >> we believe that he possibly protected her and that bullet actually unfortunately could have struck and killed us daughter. >> police say they have video of the scene and are interviewing people right now to find the young father's killers. a first in our country. police arrested a law enforcement officer for terrorist related charges. 36-year-old metro transit officer nicholas young was in federal court today after prosecutors charged him with trying to help isis. fbi says young a fairfax, virginia resident bought nearly $250 in gift cards with the intention of giving them to is isis. but unknowingly gave them to an undercover fbi agent. the criminal complaint described young as a disturbed man who tortured small animals as child. officials say young was easily influenced by isis and sorry media. >> we know that part of the strategy that is used by stream mist groups around the world including isil is to use social media to try to recruit

followers from countries around the world. >> he was just little weird. he was a little closed off. >> court documents show young was on the fbi's radar since 2010. his next core pierce is on friday. if convicted, he faces as long as 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine. a woman missing $700 stall stolen right out of her purse and new jersey state police say they know who did it. new jersey troopers are looking for this woman. they say she grabbed a purse in a shopping cart at a hampton township wal*mart. state police say a surveillance camera caught her taking cash out of it. and they she later brought the purse to customer service and turn it in. she left the parking lot in a light colored suv. little league team in south jersey getting whole lot of praise for what they did to their team's jerseys. they swapped out their names and their numbers for the names of police officers who have died in the line of duty. shawnette wilson has their inspirational story from galloway township.

>> reporter: south jersey sand sharks baseball team honoring fallen police officers. they had new jersey made to wear during their championship baseball game in hershey last weekend. seventy three their names they replaced them with the names of fallen officers much it's cup of touching to their coach gary brenner also a 14 year veteran of the galloway township police department. >> found the names of some officers and their badge numbers we put them on the back of our jersey. we have a badge of mourning band on our shirt as well as the american flag. the way things have been lately with law enforcement and a lot of tragedies we've had, we wan wanted to remember our brothers and sisters who have been lost. >> reporter: the officers were with the team in spirit they were down couple runs but in the last inning they chanted they were doing it for the officers and they came back and won the game. the team now plans to center jerseys to the families of the officers. in galloway township, shawnette wilson, fox 29 news. a proud us veteran wants to

>> lucy, philadelphia police officer is being hailed a hero tonight after his quick thinking saved a man's live in matter of seconds. officer joel rice was driving near broad street and bell field avenue when he saw car crash. rice rushed to one of the cars involved. when he saw the driver was unconscious and slumped over the seat. police say rice got the driver out of the car, get this, just before it burst into names. that driver is in the hospital tonight, but authorities tell us he is going to be all right. in north philadelphia, dozens gathering in the intersection of broad street and cecil b. moore avenue for the say her name speak out. organizers say the event honored the lives of women killed by law enforcement. well, any college student will tell you how expensive textbooks are these days. so tonight philadelphia mayor jim kenney teamed up with a local non-profit to help two lucky students. cep even joined unity in the community for operation college help. team surprised two students with

through the lehigh valley possibly seeing some showers bubbling up but really not until afternoon that we see this really getting its act together. by about 2:00 o'clock through philadelphia. and then i think moving through south jersey and down the shore little lit later on toward the din are in hour between 5:00 and about 8:00 p.m. so if we timed it out, early, we're a couple days out lehigh valley between 11:00 and 2:00. philadelphia area and suburbs between 2:00 and 5:00. this is saturday afternoon and south jersey, delaware, heading off the shore by 8:00 o'clock but generally the range between five and 8:00 p.m. as far as precipitation well in the heavier downpours you're going to see more but both of our long range models are saying about tenth, .20 to about .30 of an inch of rain that's the way it looks right now. we'll continue to update you as we get closer if we know the weekend is important. we'll zen it back to you luce is he. >> got happy news here for you kathy. baby owl is back in the wild and healthy tonight after staff from the barnes foundation rescued him earlier this year in marion. staff found him at the barnes

arboretum in march. employees at the schuylkill wildlife rehab center not only nursed that little guy back to health helped his wing but they had to teach him how to hunt. hundreds of people are lining up for the national bow fan botanic in washington, d.c. to see the corpse flower to full bloom. the gigantic flour smells like rotting flesh. they only bloom every few years. their scent a tractors beatles and flesh flys that help it reproduce. at least seven have bloomed in the past few months. experts say it's really strange phenomenon and they like to study it more but since they bloom so rarely that's going to be a tough mission. all right. howard what you got? >> the olympics. they're about to get underway and i'm not a little bit happy with one of the events. i really don't think the shows much sport. my comment is next.

about to go full steam ahead in rio. a lot of other issues over there but i'm not on board with at least one of the events. but it's one that has been eating at me, honestly it's been eating at me for years. what the usa has done in put olympic basketball team together has become a joke. now i know i have to go back over 20 years to watch a team of amateurs, remember when the olympics were about the purity and love for the game and not for the money? the usa olympic committee is now about ego an nba all star team. now what does that prove when the usa wins by 40 points every night? the 1992 dream team now that was unique. the 1996 team was still a fresh experience but the usa has proved their point. they're better. we are better and we have better players when using professional athletes. heck, half the teams in the nba could win a gold medal. where is the sport in that? now the basketball team is actually

boring at this point in the olympic, and don't think players are doing this for free. they all get big money from their shoe companies. now, it used to be one of the pure things remaining in sports but that's over. unfortunately, never to return. lucy? >> all right. thank you howard. bradley cooper is talking about the brew haha from the democratic national convention. we told you last week some fans were upset that he attend dnc cooper now says it caught him off guard and that "republicans were up in arms that i was watch -- was there watching the president speak cooper portrayed naval seal chris kyle in the 2014 american sniper film. some feel the dnc appearance insulted kyle's memory. apology tonight from the sesame workshop it tries clear up some quotes around the changing cast rolls. last week word got out that three veteran actors from the children's program would not be part of the up coming season.
