>> and i'm leslie. a tragic conclusion to the search of nicole. she was found about a mile from where her car was found last saturday. allison barber is in fairfax county where the fire department is in mourning and we had this story on the wusa9 app and we come from madison county with details. >> reporter: tonight we can confirm that a suicide note was found so no reason to believe there is foul play. >> we have made a preliminary investigation and we believe it is nicole. >> it ended up at the white oak trail and 300 yards in the wilderness. >> it

area. >> a team of six searchers spotted the remains as a lone helicopter soared overhead. the grim discovery prompted the police cruisers to hustle down the mountain and head to a parking lot in shen na doa. >> we don't have cell service and we don't mind it. >> her final drive would have taken her down rural roads and stunning mountains. to her final resting place. >> her remains will be taken to the office of the medical examiner in manassas for examination and autopsy and

in madison county virginia. andrea mckaren. investigators are trying to pull together a timeline to determine when nicole arrived at the park and when she died. let's go to fairfax county. allison barber at fire station 32 where a candle still burns there. >> reporter: in the past hour we received a statement from the fire chief richard bower saying he and the entire department are saddened by this news. he said as they wait to hear more information their thoughts and prayers are with nicole's friends and family. as most of you know this fire station is where nicole middendorf worked. we saw one person come by here and play flowers at the front door. as news of a body in shen na doa park made its way to

fire department the officials declined to speak. the only statement about the tragic outcome online. there was a post run by middendorf family and wusa9 received an email from nicole's sister. >> our hearts are broken. we believe nicole has been found but not in the way anticipated. she said thank you to police and friends and to strangers. it has been a challenging time for everybody she wrote and we learned that there is an amazing community spanning the entire globe full of love and support. with this community that helped sustain us. we thank everyone for their time, dedication and support. and ask that you keep our family in your prayers. >> nicole was supposed to be here at work tomorrow. she would have started her shift at 7:00 a.m. a spokesperson says the fire chief is planning to come by here tomorrow morning to be
