news ten at 7am on fox 43. i'm don roberts. lets start our winter weather team coverage with meteorologist jeremy wheeler. he's tracking a cold, but dry day. jeremy, it's the calm before the storm. ("jeremy ad libs wx headlines") winter storm watch up for areas north and west of the metro area for tomorrow into saturday. today: mostly sunny. highs will be in the mid- upper 30s. winds nw 10-15mph. tonight: increasing clouds. lows will be in the upper 20s. winds north 5-10mph. friday: rain/snow mix in the late morning or midday. becoming all rain late in the day. heavy rain at times. highs will be in the low 40s. winds ene 5- 15mph. today we will see quiet weather. high pressure is in control. highs will be in the 30s. we'll see precipitation start up tomorrow. the models bring it in a little later in the day. so this will allow for more

the conditions. rico - how's it looking? don, everything is really looking great., but as you can see it's quiet. let's give you a closer look - the roads are clear for the most part - there's a light dusting of snow on the grass - that's all about - nothing really to be alarmed about this morning. as you head out the door this morning, you may notice a light coat of snow on your car if it was parked when the flurries fell yesterday. it doesn't appear like the flurries stuck to any windshields , so it should come off very freezing temperatures this morning. in virginia beach, public work crews prepped the roads overnight for drivers - trying to get ahead of what's to come next. other cities from the peninsula to the southside have crews out assessing the roads and will pre-treat

there are water concerns for people in chesapeake near fentress landing field. tests found high levels of chemicals from firefighting foam in the water. 10 on your side learned the navy is providing bottled water to workers at naval auxiliary landing field fentress as a precaution. the navy says it will test groundwater near the field to see if the issue impacts any neighborhoods nearby that may use well water. happening today, the former oklahoma police officer convicted of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women is expected to be in court for sentencing. you're looking at daniel holtzclaw when he learned about his conviction last month. he raped and sexually assaulted 13 african american women while on duty. a jury recommended a sentence that totaled more than 260 years. before deciding on that today, a judge will also decide on a motion for a new trial. hampton university took

cosby off its board of trustees. this follows similar actions at several universities that used to be affilated with cosby. he's been the target of dozens of sexual assault allegations dating back to the 19- 70s. cosby also faces criminal charges for a 2004 case. this morning, a minnesota police officer is apologizing about a controversial facebook post he made about the dr. martin luther king, junior holiday. he urged drivers to run over black live matters protestors, then wrote on how to get away with it. that officer was on the st. paul police force for more than 20 that someone would encourage violence on a day celebrating a man who taught peace." police say they are actively investigating the post. they say the officer's statement does not reflect the values of the entire department. right now, that officer is suspended.

aware of the investigation, and will let it play out before letting his client comment. happening today, a big deployment in this cold weather. the u-s-n-s patuxent is scheduled to leave naval station norfolk this afternoon. this is video when the patuxent came home over holidays last year. the mainly civilian-crewed ship with about 100 on board, is a fleet oiler that fuels other u-s navy ships when they're out at sea. the fbi and the military are investigating a bomb threat at a local military base. investigators closed gate 5 to joint expeditionary base little creek-fort story for several hours wednesday night. a base spokesman confirms someone found a suspicious package at the gate at shore drive and independence boulevard in virginia beach. fbi agents tells us they took a suspect into custody. as of last night, agents were still questioning that person. new this morning, a snowboarder could face criminal charges after he recorded

triggering an avalanche. take a look at this video from a camera 29-yer-old christian mares was wearing on friday. he and his friends are at sugar bowl resort in california. you can see him get buried under the snow of the avalanche in this video. the resort says this is a very active avalanche area and is closed to the public. the resort also says mares's actions put himself, his friends, and the skiing public at risk. everyone is getting ready for winter weather this weekend. we're all watching the forecast, especially the airlines. with millions of people traveling this weekend, air carriers are preparing for the possibility of lots of delays and cancellations. american, southwest and delta have already issued travel waivers to customers. they're letting customers make changes without penalties. the airlines say they should know later today if they'll have to start cancelling flights. people in new york city

good morning and thanks for joining us on wavy news ten at 7 am on fox 43. i'm katie collett. let's start with breaking news now in james city county. firefighters tell us a fire broke out inside lumber liquidator's main sanding unit just after midnight. that's in toano. crews tell us workers were inside when the fire started. the factory shut down overnight as firefighters worked to the get the fire under control. they estimate the fire caused thousands of dollars in damage to machinery. they're still

many cities in our area are preparing for the next winter storm wave. in portsmouth, the city tells us it's trucks are ready, and crews are working on a 12 hour shift. norfolk will make sure its equipment is ready to handle the job. they could pre-treat bridges and overpasses starting today. virginia beach doubled its crews and has three thousand tons of a salt and sand mix ready to go. suffolk also has sand and salt ready. chesapeake has "ice team" crews monitoring the roads for any slick spots. in williamsburg, public works crews are planning for a worst case scenario. many people in our area headed out to the stores before the first wave of winter weather hit. shoppers in hampton scooped up ice melt and shovels today.

hardware on town center way says they've solds hundreds of both. salt is also going quickly. c15 02:30:44 - :48 "as fast as we can bring it out of the back, it's going off the floor." some stores are already out of salt - like the ace hardware in newport news, on warwick boulevard. an employee says they'll have more tomorrow. folks in the western part of the state flocked to the grocery store and cleared the shelves. these pictures come from a kroger store near roanoke. shoppers have already pulled milk and bread from the shelves. they're expecting at least six inches of snow there over the next couple days. people living in northern virginia and up past baltimore are under a blizzard watch. meteorologists in washington forecast the area could get anywhere from 18 to 24 inches of snow friday night into saturday. some say this storm could bring more snow to the area than d-c has seen in decades. you're looking live at the traffic mess in washington, d-c. the winter storm will bring

heavy snow that could shut down the city. watch as this woman fell on an icy d-c street. she went down right in front of a car, that luckily stopped. she got up and kept going. but it's not easy getting around the nation's capital this responded to more than 150 accidents on the road statewide. one crash turned out to be deadly in bedford county. in fairfax, state police say a van hit a trooper on 4-95. medics took the trooper to the hospital with minor injuries. state police say if you are driving on slippery roads, slow down and give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. with more cold weather coming, we want you to be safe while staying warm in your home. firefighters say about a third of all house fires in the winter come from space heaters. 10 on your side got this video of virginia beach crews putting out a fire at a mobile home on ritzcraft drive yesterday.

that may use well water. new this morning, senate democrats blocked a bill that would have cracked down on syrian and iraqi refugees coming into the u-s. the bill would require checks and individual sign- offs from three high-ranking federal officials before a syrian or iraqi refugee could enter the senate minority leader harry reid says republicans refused to let democrats add amendments to the bill. one of those would have forced republican senators to go on record over donald trump's controversial plan to ban all muslims from entering the u- s. new this morning, the obama administraiton could announce as early as today, new visa requirements. they would apply to travelers who are dual nationals of iran, iraq, sudan, or syria. the new requirements would also apply for any european travelers who visited any of those countries in the last five years. the new requirements are meant to make it harder for europeans who fought

city officials across hampton roads have really been turning their focus to the second round of snow heading into our area tomorrow and this weekend. that's the potential big one that may be of concern, but new forecast models show it could fizzle out and may not be that bad. nonetheless, some cities other crews are out assessing the roads and will pre- treat the roads and spread salt and sand, if necessary. in virginia beach, public work crews prepped the roads overnight. so at this hour - nothing too drastic outdoors - few cars have passed us near independence boulevard - and it appears everyone

tells us it's truck teams are ready, and crews are working on a 12 hour shift. norfolk is making sure its equipment is ready to handle the job. you may see them pre-treat bridges and overpasses starting today. virginia beach doubled its crews and has three thousand tons of a salt and sand mix ready to go. suffolk also has sand and salt ready. chesapeake has "ice team" crews monitoring the roads for any slick spots. in williamsburg, public works crews are planning for a worst case scenario. many people in our area headed out to the stores before the first wave of winter weather hit. shoppers in hampton scooped up ice melt and shovels. the manager of ace hardware on town center way says they've solds hundreds of both. salt is also going quickly. some stores are already sold out- like the ace hardware in newport news, on warwick boulevard. an employee says they'll have more today. folks in the western part of the state flocked to the grocery store and cleared the shelves. these pictures come from a kroger store near roanoke.

pulled milk and bread from the shelves. they're expecting at least six inches of snow there over the next couple days. people living in northern virginia, up past baltimore, are under a blizzard watch. meteorologists in washington forecast the area could get anywhere from 18 to 24 inches of snow friday night into saturday. some say this storm could bring more snow to the area than d-c has seen in winter storm will bring wind and heavy snow that could shut down the city. wintry conditions made the evening commute stretch way into the night with traffic clogging interstates 95 and 66. the slick roads were even a problem for the secret service. you're looking at video of vehicles in president barack obama's motorcade skidding on the road. agents had to drive the president from joint base andrews in maryland to the white house because the bad weather grounded helicopters. one report said the usual 25 minute drive took more than a hour. because of the slippery
