only on 10 - shocking video shows a fight between a bus driver and a student in newport news. this startling video you're looking at shows the driver, 58-year-old john hopkins attacking a 12-year-old boy from crittenden middle school. you can see the student hit back. this morning, that driver faces an assault charge and the student is suspended for his role in the fight. rico bush has more now on this shocking video you'll see only on 10. don, a school spokeswoman says surveillance video from the school bus shows the student acting inappropriately before hopkins

physical. we have yet to see that video leading up to the altercation, but we did obtain footage of the fight only moments after it started on a crowded school bus. let's show you another look at the altercation. you can hear students screaming in the background as hopkins hits and chocks the child on the school bus. in the video - the student is child's face. police say the assault happened wednesday afternoon when the driver was taking students home from class. we caught with parents for comment on the shocking video - take a listen to their concerns. saritta ayers - parent - c10 01:0719 "i mean that's pretty, pretty messed up i mean just that video it looks bad it looks really bad." butt to sahilys price - parent c11 01:09:36 "unfortunately because they are adults, they have to kind of have a little bit more control. home with bad intentions. 18-year-old tyrell slaughter spoke with our jason marks from jail. he says this was the first and last time he will do something like this. he says he was on his way to green run high, when he decided to go inside what he thought was a nice looking home on chimney creek drive. the back door just happened to be open. he chased him down and help him until police came. slaughter had this to say when our jason marks asked him why he took the items. hungry. it's kind of hard out the green run area to get a job and money, so i guess i found that's easier than going to get a job" slaughter faces burglary and grand larceny charges. he remains in jail on a

only on 10, a big update to car vandalism we first started investigating last weekend. neighbors in the fox hill community of hampton told our joe fisher someone shot out about 30 vehicle windows. when we spoke to police, we found out that number more than doubled. officers are investigating 73 cases since february 1st. police say this also happened in the willow oaks and buckroe neighborhoods. sgt. matt bond, hampton police "it appears that a slingshot, pellet gun or possibly even a paintball gun might be the propulsion, the items that are being propelled into these windows that are actually causing the actual damage to the vehicles." "obviously, it's got to be very vandalized in any way, shape, or form." police are not sure who is doing this, but here's a clue they have so far. it's a picture from a surveillance video on one of the streets. it shows a dark-colored, truck. police say most of the incidents happened on friday and saturday nights. officers will step up patrols, but if you have

could help, call the crime line. today we're waiting for a big decision on trash plans in hampton roads. each city served by the southeastern public service authority, or s-p-s-a, will make decision today that will affect what you pay for trash for the are looking for ways to cut costs. right now, a company called "wheelabrator" takes spsa's trash and sorts and burns it. another company - repower south- put in a bid to take over spsa's account. repower south plans to build a facility in chesapeake and turn the trash into pellets. a portsmouth city councilman says the two contracts differ by 20-dollars per ton. repower south has a lower bid right now. however the councilman says there's a third option - dump spsa altogether. the spsa board meets this morning at 9:30. we'll keep you posted on what happens. now to decision 20-16 and a bitter debate between the remaining republican

there were just four candidates on the stage last night in detroit. marco rubio and donald trump each laid into each other with some pretty personal remarks. 1:05 - 1:14 trump: "...don't worry about it little marco, i will." rubio: "well, let's hear it big donald." trump: "don't worry about it little marco." moderator: "gentlemen" rubio defended a line he used earlier this week referring to trump having small hands, but the frontrunner candidate fired back. :11 - 21 sen. marco rubio / (r) presidential candidate :11-:14 "if there is any one who ever deserved to be attacked that way, it's small... something else must be small. i guarantee there is no problem, i guarantee." john kasich tried to stay above the fray and literaly said "i won't bite" when the moderator tried to get a comment about trump. at the end of the debate, each candidate said they eventual republican nominee. last night trump also responded to harsh comments from former presidential candidate mitt romney. at a speech in utah

trump as president would hurt the party, and he's only "playing the for suckers". here's how trump responded. tempers flared on the streets of fontana, california wednesday. a man got out of his s-u-v and started hitting the passenger of a pickup truck. then the truck's driver hops out and kicks one man. the fight goes on for about 25 seconds until other people in the area break it up. everyone involved got in their vehicles and drove away, and it doesn't look like anyone was seriously

product. breaking news in the death of bobbi kristina brown. the medial examiner just announced how she died. they say two things led to her death - her face being submerged in water, and drug intoxication. the m-e says marijuana, alcohol, and anxiety medication were all involved in her death. the 22-year-old daughter of singer whitney houston died last year. first responrs found her face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in atlanta. tomorrow morning, the newport news shipyard will celebrate christen its newest submarine, the washington. elisabeth mabus, daughter of secretary of the navy ray mabus, will do the honors of smashing a bottle of champagne across the sub's bow. the washington is the latest virginia-class submarine. this is a picture of the boat under construction at the shipyard. crews first laid her keel in november of 2014. tomorrow's ceremony starts at 11:00 am. tonight, the u-s-n-s laramie will come home

month deployment. the laramie's crew of civil service mariners supported u-s naval operations around the world. that included refueling ships and replenishing them with supplies and cargo. this is video of a previous homecoming. the laramie is scheduled to pull into naval station norfolk around 8:00 tonight. today is the last day of training flights over n-a-s oceana in virginia beach. system 2/23/2016 navy pilots have been practicing for several upcoming air shows above the base and surrounding neighborhoods. for the last couple of weeks, you might have heard extra jet noise, especially in the late afternoons. things will get a little quieter since the navy says their extra training ends today. this morning, we're hearing from the man who wants to be the next mayor of portsmouth. as we reported earlier this week, former city manager john rowe announced he will enter the race. he'll face current mayor, kenny wright. rowe made the official announcement in front of a crowded group of supporters last night. three

the sheriff have also publicly endorsed him. john rowe - mayoral candidate c1 18:44:46 - we get to not only set the future for portsmouth. but we get a chance to set it by examining the past behavior of our current local elected officials. rowe was ousted from the city manager's position after a city council vote in april 2015. at the time, mayor wright said it was because of rowe's proposed tax increase to close a budget gap. this morning, we have new information about which local sports authority stores are closing. this after the company filed for bankruptcy. the store on coliseum drive in hampton, the one at janaf in norfolk, and the one near lynnhaven mall in virginia beach are among the 140 across the country that are shuttering. sports authority used to be the largest sporting goods retailer in the country. the norfolk school board is giving an elementary school building back to the city.

unanimously to turn over oakwood elementary school, off central business park drive. a school spokeswoman says the city requested the property because it has a buyer. a city spokersperson would only say, the city is talking with a private company about expanding its business. if the deal goes through, the company would tear the school down. the students who go to oakwood would move to richard bowling elementary, a few miles away. all new this morning, we're getting a better idea of how much damage last week's deadly storm system did to virginia's farm industry. the virginia farm bureau says its gotten 126 claims totaling $1-point-6 million dollars. chopper 10 was above the damage in waverly. the tornadoes left five people dead across virginia, including three in waverly. in essex county, the virginia department of forestry says the storm caused about $750-thousand dollars in damage to timber alone. icy roads in vermont even proved difficult for police officers to drive on.

new this morning, an incredible story of survival from a virginia state trooper. last month, in western richmond, the trooper got hit by a car while clearing an accident. "the human body is not meant to be struck by a car at 55 miles per hour and you're not supposed to make it.. through.. i'm just glad i'm still here and we made it through." throoper glasscock. he says, on february 15th while he was clearing a deadly accident, a driver on route 2-88 hit him and the people he was helping. the accident killed a 53-year-old woman, trooper. we get to not only set the future for portsmouth. but we get a chance to set it by examining the past behavior of our current local elected officials. rowe was ousted from the city manager's position after a city council vote in april 2015. at the time, mayor wright said it was because of rowe's proposed tax increase to close a budget gap. new developements in a big debate in portsmouth over a confederate monument. this morning, governor terry mcauliffe is reviewing a bill that could impact on monuments across virginia. house bill 587 passed the house and senate this week. portsmouth mayor kenny wright, who opposes the monument in olde town, says he's asked the governor to veto the bill. a law from 1998 already bans local governments from removing war monuments, but the sponsor of the new bill changed the language slightly. it would protect all war monuments, no matter when they were built.

yogurt could help protect women against high blood pressure. researchers at boston university compared two groups. women who ate 5 or more servings of yogurt a week...and those who ate it once a month. the group that ate more yogurt had a 20 percent lower risk of developing hypertension. doctors tried the study in men, but found weaker results. the national dairy council funded the research. new this morning, a litter of puppies is safe and sound thanks to firefighters in california. look at this video of the rescue. crews pulled three puppies, their young mother, and another dog from an 8-foot deep space under a downtown fresno building. it wasn't an easy task. one firefighter had to crawl 70 feet through a concrete tunnel to get the animals. this morning, the dogs are with a foster family until they're ready to be adopted. this morning, animal workers in minnesota are nursing almost 100 dogs back to health after a bad hoarding situation.
