effort to get you in the voting booth. as wyff new 4's corey davis tells us, the deadline to register before the south carolina primaries is approaching. corey: today reverend jesse jackson spoke about the importance of having younger voters register to vote before the deadline this month. the civil rights leader gathered with local activists in his hometown of greenville at the west end community development center. jackson says he's traveling the south in a campaign to encourage better voter turnout. he also touched on issues he believes are affecting low-income families in south carolina. >> a million people in poverty in our state and 250,000 have no health insurance. we should not turn down the affordable healthcare act, and that will enable people to be able to work their way out of poverty. corey: that was part of the jackson's message, that voting could have a direct impact on the outcome of future laws and policies that are introduced. your voter registration must be received by january 27 to vote in the upcoming south carolina

the republican primary will be held on february 20 with the democratic binary -- democratic primary scheduled the following week on the 27th. jackson says he will make his way around the south as more primaries approach this year. reverend jackson will be back in town on january 15 to help kick off celebrations for the martin luther king, jr. holiday. corey davis, wyff news 4 in greenville. patrick: you can regegter to vote at your local dmv, online through the state election commission, by mail, fax, or e-mail. right now a local group is gearing up to celebrate the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. the rainbow push coalition of greenville announced several events today. a gala will be held on january 15 at the hyatt regency hotel in downtown greenenlle. tickets are $50. a college fair with more than 20 historically black colleges and universities is planned at the peace center on january 16. that event is free to the

the mlk celebration will wrap up on january 18 with a blood drive and computer donation at the phillis wheatley center. >> we ask african americans to come and donate blood because there is a very severe need for african american blood. patrick: you can find more details about these events on our web site at www.wyff.com. tonight, authorities in laurens county say a teenager has been located after his parents were charged in his disappearance. deputies say michael hudson ran away from the parent who has custody of him. friday morning, michael steward hudson and kelldon vaughn hudson, both of fountain inn, were arrested and charged with custodial interference and unlawful neglect of a child. deputies have not said where hudson was found. turning to the weather now. the start of january is bringing cold temperatures to our area. wyff news 4 meteorologist chris

chris, how cold are we talking? it was definitely chillier today . chris: i think it is fair to label this cool. next tuesday is going to be cold as well. wait until you see that forecast. nonetheless, this is cold compared what we have dealt with lately. record-breaking december is no more. we are in january and it is chilly. 36 in boone. 41 in asheville. 47 in greenville. over the next few hours, nothing but clear skies. if you're heading downtown, temperature schools the over 30's. in asheville, clear skies. quickly heading to the lower 30's. eventually the 20's. a huge cold blast comes in on monday. i will detail that for you coming up in the full weather. patrick: people who suffered damage in october's massive floods have two days left to request federal help. the deadline to apply for fema aid ends monday january 4. the fema aids available in 24

, including greenville, spartanburg, and greenwood counties. again, this deadline is for damage from october's record flooding, not damage caused by this week's heavy rains. the flood that inundated parts of the midwest are starting to recede. now damage assessment and cleanups are underway as cities further south brace for what is underway. chris: in missouri, it's a day for drying out. >> it's always three feet deep two feet now. chris: the town, waged between a demure mac and mississippi rivers, inundated. laughing -- leaving 150 homes underwater. 24 are dead, 2 remain missing. >> the 500 year flood, i would

chris: the governor's availability in missouri are surveying the damage. -- the governors of illinois and missouri are surveying the damage. the coast guard is watching from the air, watching for people that might be stranded. the national guard is ready to help too. >> we have communication equipment as well as sandbags and other supplies to support local first responders. chris: those who escaped with their lives but little else remain hopeful. >> we will get through this. we will come out better on the other side than where we started. chris: the focus shifts downstream, where places like memphis and vicksburg prepare for the surge later this month. chris pollone, nbc news, new york. patrick: a south carolina man is charged with attempted murder after being accused of opening fire on police. investigators in hampton county say 27-year-old malcolm orr opened fire on officer when they

store. one officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. charlotte police say a drunk man stole an officer's patrol car and crashed it in the woods.. the officer left the keys in the car after exiting the cruiser at a local business. police then say this 22-year-old jumped into the unlocked cruiser and sped off. a short time later, the vehicle was found crashed in the woods, totaled. the man was found a short time later and is now in jail, facing several charges, including driving while impaired. a man is critically injured after falling 20 feet underground in eastern tennessee. the man in his 60's fell while exploring caves outside knoxville. he and a group were about half a mile underground when he slipped on rocks, stumbled, and fell into a pit. that set off a 12 hour rescue effort. the group from atlanta had the proper training and permission to be in the cave. coming up, federal investigators

23 states on april, 20, 2015. police arrested a connecticut man after finding a stash of weapons in his car near gillette stadium in foxborough, massachusetts. during a search of the suspect's car, they found an electric stun gun and several swords. police say they were notified around 11:00 a.m. on new year's day of a suspicious man in the stadium's employee parking lot . that was about two hours before the winter classic hockey game between the boston bruins and thmontreal canadiens. the space-x falcon 9 rocket is ready to fly again. ceo elon musk said the rocket was undamaged during its launch and subsequent return to earth on december 21. once the rocket's second stage engines ignited, the booster stage engines detached. it then positions itself for a gentle, upright landing.

freezing, warming up to 52. in anderson, starting with sunshine, ending the day with sunshine. warming up to the 50's. in asheville, lots of blue skies. temperatures freezing, warming up to the 40's. that is where the cold will be felt the most in the mountains. 41 degrees in asheville. 43 in hendersonville. over towards spartanburg, union, cherokee counties, look for a widespread range of temperatures. 54 for pacolet road. 53 for jonesville. back towards oconee in pickens county, middle 50's. tampa bay at carolina -- the big game. 55 degrees to start the game. kickoff is at 4:25. it will begin colder as the game goes along. if you're heading to bank of america stadium in charlotte, you might need the jacket and gloves. lower 40's by the end of the game. as we head into monday, even colder air moves in.

the day goes on. the high will be sometime around 11:00 and 12:00. then it gets colder after that. that is the next cold last. it will take hold for quite some time. we are watching for this northern jetstream tuesday up there -- jetstream to stay up there at least for now. the good news for us in the mountains -- no ice, no snow. the northern part of the state allowing this to be all rain. heading into the latter half of january, the pattern favors these emerging jets. that means cold air will already be in place when these lows ride up. we are not watching any particular storm that could cause this snow. we are looking at upper-level patterns here. high-pressure sets in for the whole week. dry conditions until that low comes in on thursday into friday. it's going to move in a northeast fashion, allowing

to be all liquid precipitation. lodging back towards the west near alaska are these big low-pressure systems. we could see these starts to hit our way by the latter half of january. if there is cold air in place, that could spell trouble for us. nothing showing up like that in the four day plus. we will keep you posted. next several days are clear. but by tuesday, a high of 41 degrees and yet take. 37 in indie carolina mountains. i put 34 for the mountains on monday, but that's going to be early in the day. it will be getting colder and breezy. chief meteorologist john cessarich be back tracking those temperatures. you want to tune in then because it will be downright nasty cold monday night. temperatures in the 30's on tuesday. wednesday will be called as well. we warm up a bit on thursday and friday. above freezing, so no frozen concerns. next week clear things backs out

the best is yet to come. >> clemson gets a commitment from one of the best linebackers in the country. rayshaun shaq smith rated as the number two outside linebacker in this years recruiting class. smith chooses clemson over auburn and lsu. the season is ending, but recruiting never does. while college football teams seek success in one season, there's a huge focus on players who will shape the seasons to come. clemson's run to the college football playoff national championship game is the culmination of one of the best seasons in school history. i asked clemson co offensive coordinator tony elliott how this season helps the tigers on the recruiting trail. >> i think it brings more attention to the tiger paw. our social media dept and our recruiting department does a great job of getting that out there. now it is validation. we are a significant football power. we can compete with the best in the country. we can all of elevated the coaching that we have. it shows that if you are looking for an opportunity to grow every year of your life, spiritually,

mitchell. the bulldogs open up a 10-3 lead. just before the half, more from godwin. this time from his normal position. godwin skies for the score. dogs up 17-3 at the break. third quarter, georgia adds one more touchdown. sony michel runs it 21 yards and powers his way into the end zone to build the bulldogs lead to 24-3. penn state didn't roll over and die. a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns put them in position to attempt a game tying hail mary. georgia knocks it down and the bulldogs win their 10th game of the season with a 24-17 win over penn state in the tax slayer bowl. tough two weeks for the clemson basketball team. tigers have lost 3 straight games heading into today's game against florida state. clemson desperate for a win with games against syracuse and louisville coming up next week. we go to the well for florida state and clemson. tigers trying to snap the seminoles 6 game winning streak. have a day, jordan roper. the senior from irmo had the hot hand today. drills the 3 from the corner. clemson clings to a 2 point lead at the break. second half, tigers turn defense
