everyone's guns. here's the breakdown of the executive measures unveiled today. there will be expanded background checks on firearms sales, a step-up in research and technology, to make sure triggers aren't pulled accidentally, and expanded treatment for mental illness nationwide. plus, more people would be hired to process paperwork, to make the system more efficient, it includes extra funding for the fbi and atf. gun control is expected to be a key topic at next week's state of the union address. michael: today, we learned republicans will count on governor nikki haley to voice opposition to the president's plan. she has been chosen to give the gop response. haley made a brief stop in the upstate tonight. wyff news 4's liz lohuis has the story. liz: governor haley did not comment tonight on the response she will give to the state of the union address next week, but lawmakers in south carolina feel she will give a very thought provoking response. >> the first south carolinian to

for representing us. liz: at a stop in pickens county tonight, governor haley spoke about the heart of south carolina. >> we care about how we treat people. we are respectful in the way we treat people, but we believe in what we believe, and we do fight for it. liz: local lawmakers believe that fight will be in her during the state of the union gop response. >> we had a lot of terrific things happen to our state, in our state, and she led, when the national eye was on south carolina, with a very steady hand. liz: easley councilman terry moore expects her to voice opposition to obama's gun control orders. >> the president brought up that conversation today, and i think everyone in the united states is talking about that tonight, and a lot of people don't agree. liz: political analyst chip felkel say it's no surprise haley was chosen for this gig. >> she is seen as one of the rising star governors in the country. it's an honor. liz: but as for rumblings she

felkel says, not so fast. >> from her position of growing prprinence nationally, could she be a good choice for somebody? absolutely. does this mean she is? we don't even have a nominee yet, so we can't be talking about a vp. liz: the state of the union will be held january 12. liz lohuis, wyff news 4, in pickens county. carol: governor haley also spoke tonight about the confederate flag removal from state house grounds. eight people showed up to say they did not like it. >> hey hey, ho ho, governor haley's got to go. carol: it came on the heels of the charleston church shooting. it was removed july 10. this group has been protesting the removal since then. michael: in 2015, more than 1700 people were injured or killed by mass shootings in the u.s. that's according to the gun violence archive. carol: during his speech today, president obama recounted some of the high-profile mass shootings in recent years.

killed in a mass shooting in san bernardino. it happened december 2, inside a social services center. both suspects were also killed in a shootout with police. michael: turning to charleston , last june, 21-year-old dylann roof stands accused of killing nine people at emanuel ame church. he is set to go on trial july 11. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. carol: to newtown, connecticut. in 2012, adam lanza opened fire at sandy hook elementary school. killed. he later took his own life. michael: and there was the mass shooting at the theater in 2012. james holmes opened fire during a midnight screening of "the dark knight rises." holmes killed 12 people, injured another 70. in july of 2015, a jury convicted holmes on all counts. a judge then sentenced him to 3318 years in prison. carol: in tucson, arizona, in 2011, jared lee loughner opened fire during a political event. six people were killed.

carol: to the weather now, a live look at woododff road. a cold night out there. feeling more like winter. john: absolutely. you can see the temperatures, very cold, colder than last night. the difference is, yesterday at this time, we were dealing with making for dangerous wind chills. instead, light winds across the area. crystal their skies. 16 in boone, mid 20's in asheville and hendersonville, 28 in greenville, 29 in anderson. clear skies will stay with us. tomorrow morning, sunshine. very cold temperatures, light winds, 22 in the upstate, 15 in the mountains on average. a slow warming trend, and we wait for the next stormrm system to arrive. carol: in greenville county, the sheriff's office there says a man was shot in the leg. it happened just after 7:30

old buncombe road. deputies say the victim is expected to be ok. at this time, no arrests have been made. for the latest, go to wyff 4.com, or download the mobile app. michael: a deadly attack in afghanistan. a u.s. service member was killed, two others wounded . it happened today. defense officials say it happened during an ongoing operation against the taliban. officials say a medical helicopter was hit by a mortar while it was on the ground. they say the chopper was able to take off. the name of the service member killed has yet to be released tonight. carol: to georgia. rescued from an overnight hostage situation. it happened at a hotel in dekalb county. police say a man was holding them hostage at knife point. police responded after receiving a call about a domestic-related assault. hours later, a swat team rescued the 12 people. the children ranged in age from 3 months to 17 years. police say the man stabbed himself in the neck.

michael: tonya couch appeared in court in los angeles today. she is the mother of the the so-called "affluenza teen." she agreed to be sent to texas to face a felony charge of hindering apprehension. authorities believe she and her son, ethan, fled to mexico in november. prosecutors were investigating whether he violated his probation. couch was sentenced to ten years probation for a drunk driving crash that killed four people. you may remember, he blamed his behavior. he remains in mexico, and is fighting deportation to the u.s. carol: the wife of bill cosby will not be deposed tomorrow. a massachusetts judge has granted camille cosby's emergency motion. last week, a judge ordered her to give a deposition as part of a defamation suit against her husband. the defamation case involves 7 women. they all have accused bill cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them. the comedian was arrested in pennsylvania on a sexual assault charge last week. he is free on $1 million bond. that arrest stems from an alleged incident from 2004. the comedian has denied any

michael: in los angeles, a hoverboard burst into flames, with a man on board. the rider quickly jumped off. he then turned his camera on, and captured the smoke and fire. the man says he had the guts -- the hoverboard a few months. he said it cost him $600. carol: a storybook matchup in the national title game for clemson head coach dabo swinney. michael: the alabama connection runs deep. sports director brad fralick is here now, with more. brad: dabo swinney talked today, and told many stories about his days in alabama, from being born and raised in pelham, to dreaming of attending alabama and playing for head coach bear bryant. swinney talked about living with his mom in an apartment for most of his college life in tuscaloosa, walking on and playing for gene stallings, earning a scholarship, and winning a national title. and it is only fitting that as a coach, the first time swinney has a chance at a national title is against the crimson tide. >> this is the way it ought to

a championship, and you have the opportunity to play against the team that has been kind of the standard, you know, i think that we're excited about that. we embrace that, and look forward to competing against them. brad: alabama is the best team clemson has faced thus far. and on the other side, clemson is likely the best team alabama has faced. coming up in sports, deshaun watson weighs in on the tide, a battle of heisman trophy finalists for the title. carol: $450 million. that's the estimated jackpot for tomorrow night's powerball drawing. no one has won powerball's biggest prize since november 4th the jackpot is now the sixth-largest prize in powerball history. the last time powerball had grown this large was in february 2015. three winners split a $564.1 million prize. michael: with less than a week to go, excitement is at a fever pitch at clemson. we check in next with some of the studenen.
