parts of northeastern georgia still getting a few flurries this morning. that is about to taper off. colder lingers all day. look at the morning temperatures. ranging from 23 in greenville, 24 in anderson, spartanburg at 23, asheville at 18, toccoa at 24. dillard at 22, livonia, 24, hartwell at 27. everybody needs a warm coat, especially when the wind blows. we are seeing 15 plus mile-per-hour wind to make it feel like -1 in hendersonville and 11 in anderson. temperatures will struggle to reach 40 for the upstate. made 20's in the mountains. -- mid 20's in the mountains. geoff: thank you. these bitter cold temperatures in asheville has mobilized relief workers to get help to the homeless and get them indoors. allyson: the asheville buncombe community christian ministry shelter opened it doors to about 40 men last night.

analyst marc sandalow joins us live from washington. us. coming off new hampshire, what carolina? marc: donald trump and bernie sanders have a big momentum. after iowa and new hampshire, south carolina will bring diversity. if you took -- the city of greenville itself has more african-americans and it then the entire state of new hampshire. just to give you an idea about the demographics are different. on the republican side, it doesn't change demographics that much, but on democratic side, hillary clinton is hopeful that once a gets down to african-american and latino voters, she would do much better in south carolina. if she loses their, there will be much more serious talk about bernie sanders as the possible nominee.

minutes after 6:00 and happening today, the united way of anderson county need to help defeat 1000 school-aged children. geoff: aly myles is live in anderson this morning. aly: good morning. we are live at golden harvest food bank in anderson and talking about the higher box campaign for united -- buy a box campaign for united way. all of them will help the children in need in anderson county.
1000 children will receive meals over the weekend, food they can open and eight, they don't need a stove or microwave. it takes them through the weekend when they are not at school. the backpack program is feeding america program that has been going on for about 15 yearsrs organizations across the country embraced
the program and we are glad they united way in anderson has passionately embraced it. and because of their hard work, getting volunteers and raising money, kids know they can get that food before they leave on friday and it will take them through. aly: you were saying earlier that this is not just a problem here but globally. a lot of people don't realize this is happening in their home town or city. >> hunger among all age groups is an issue. last year in anderson county, golden harvest food bank was able to provide 1,785,000 meals
36% of the individuals who received food were children and 28% for seniors, so the vulnerable members of society are the ones that we need to be most concerned about. the kids have no weight to go and find food and the seniors don't have enough resources to take care of their needs day today. the backpack program is a direct way to help in addition to the food that comes to the warehouse and we partner with all the agencies in five counties, almost 60 agencies and they are able to come and help and get food, which helps the community and they can go back and distribute additional food beyond the bags. aly: making a huge difference. especially in the upstate. if you would like to make a huge difference, one of the boxes cost $32 and that can feed eight kids. that is four dollars with the

geoff: happening today, a prayer meeting in response to a school proposal. the school district of pickens county wants to close a.r.l lewis, holly lewis and that would mean 2600 students moved to other schools. the rally is scheduled for 7:30 this morning at ambler elementary to save the school. the hearing is scheduled this morning in the zack hammond case. he was shot and killed by a police officer in july and a hardy's parking lot during an undercover drug sting. it is a connection to the defendant's motion to quash the subpoena issued by the plaintiff. and an update now to a fired greenville county deputy accused of taking bribes. former sergeant david hays will avoid prison time after pleading guilty yesterday to misconduct in office. hays is accused of taking bribes for tips about possible gambling raids. he spent eight days in jail after his arrest. the judge sentenced him to time-served.
