name is craig baxam, 24 years old, a product of prince george's county, accused by federal prosecutors of trying to join a somalian based terrorist organization called al-shabaab. baxam was arrested by police in kenya two weeks ago and brought back to the u.s. friday. he was a member of the largo high school class of 2005. dwayne jones was his principal. >> what i can remember is that he was a pretty good student and i wish i could tell you more and hopefully this situation he's in is just an allegation and it's not true of. reporter: according to prosecutors, baxam joined the army in 2007, was deployed to iraq, reenlisted after he came home, was sent to korea and while there left the army last summer. prosecutors say baxam converted toes i happen shortly before leaving the mill -- to islam shortly before leaving the military and decided to move to africa, specifically somalia, to become a terrorist. this is baxam's mother, herself a lawyer, leaving the federal courthouse in greenbelt this afternoon, clearly not thrilled to be a part of this story. baxam's lawyer also not interested in

to u.s. 50, it allegedly attempted to strike a cheverly officer. >> reporter: prince george's county police gave chase. the suspects headed on to the bw parkway where officers say he caused the first crash sending this van careening into the woods. >> the vehicle involved in the crash went off the roadway and the occupant was trapped for a short period of time. >> reporter: police say the suspect then drove the moving van a little more than a mile up the road and caused another accident with several cars. sometime after take police caught up with the driver capturing him in howard county after he was spotted by a helicopter crew. prince george's county police called off the pursuit at some point but it's not clear exactly when. the department has now launched an investigation understanding that's an answer the public is going to want. >> we do not want to in any way unduly put our constituents in any danger unnecessarily. that's why we have procedures and that's why we're going to do a very thorough investigation. >> reporter: we're told the driver of the dark sedan is in fair condit

also learning new details about a police-involved shooting in prince george's county. an officer shot at a man suspected of stabbing someone in an apartment. it happened early this morning in the 3100 block of good hope avenue in temple hills. when officers arrived on the scene, they spotted a man running away. >> the man ran from the police, hid behind a parked car in this very dark parking lot and then popped up acting in a bizarre manner. he threw himself on the ground and then reached for and acted as if he had a weapon. >> the officer shot at the suspect but missed, but they later catch and arrested another suspect charged now with attempted murder. the victim is in critical condition. >>> a court appearance for a man suspected of attacking two women in alexandria. james click is charged with abduction and malicious wounding. the women were responding to an ad for an apartment for rent in a building on mid road. when they showed up police say -- mill road. when they showed up, police say click grabbed them, pulled them into the building and assaulted them. >>> we got our first lo
