southern prince george's county now where firefighters have been on the run all day long. right now, the fear of a hot spot that could reignite is a big concern. in fact, out-of-state firefighters are on hand helping, too. matt akland has more from outside of clinton, maryland. >> reporter: firefighters on this part of the county, the southern part of prince george's county closed through the clip ton area have been very busy throughout the day. about 20 structures have caught on fire. this wind is really causing a huge problem. to give you an example, it's hard to see behind me but it was burning earlier today and sparks from that fire actually blew across this major road over to that house and caught the rear of that home on fire. it's been impossible to control. the wind has been the fire's best friend today and the worst enemy for the residents who live in this community. many of them evacuated. >> it is very scary. >> reporter: gina ball watches the flames and smoke get just too close to her home. across the field, firefighters use a bull doze en to build a -- a bulldozer to bu

significant amount of blood all over the apartment. >> while prince george's county police were working that crime scene, d.c. police had another mystery on their hand. a 53-year-old man apparently jumped from his apartment in northeast. turns out, his name is on the lease of t langley park apartment, the scene of the double murder. and investigators are connecting the dots. >> they say that that individual in washington, d.c. was the one who actually committed the murders in prince george's county. he fled to d.c. and committed suicide. >> for now, police are labeling this case domestic and an isolated incident. but it's the sixth double homicide in prince george's county this year, something county leaders say is very troubling. >> for any murders in general, it's concerning and troubling. when you get these many and we still have half the year left, we have to figure out what we will do about it. >> police have not released the names of the victims. they are in their 20s. we don't know their relationship to the suspect and what led up to the tragedy. matt? >> thank you. >>> w

, prince georges, carol, cal bought, baltimore county, arlington, lowden, fairfax, this entire area still under a severe thunderstorm watch. now to the west where you're seeing the darker green and to the further is where we have a flash flood warning in effect. that particular area, they've been seeing rain coming down about 2 to 3 inches already reported in these areas and a it is still coming down so that's an area where we do expect to see rain continuing into the course of the next few hours. as i said this is in effect until 10:45 p.m. a flash flood warning in effect for those areas in the green. we have thunderstorm warnings have ended but i wouldn't be surprised to see more pop up. a look at truview and you can see it all moving its way through. the line heading towards areas of the east and storms continue to be very strong as well. we haven't had a lot of let up in that at all. let's go to our weather maps. hail has been a big factor, a quarter to one and 3/4 in frederick county, maryland. winds haven't been too bad but we will expect to to see showers and thunderstorms, g

house fire struggling to find a neighbor who can help. it happened in prince george's county late last night. fox 5's stacey cohan talked to neighbors today about what happened. she's live in the newsroom. stacey? >> reporter: well, maureen, unfortunately the story of 8- year-old kennedy pierson does not have a happy ending. that child died in that house fire, but out of this tragedy there is a lesson that may help you keep loved ones safe. >> i don't know what i'm going to tell my daughter. >> reporter: this woman wasn't hope when her friend's house began burning last night. she wasn't there when kim arock and ran out of the house for -- awoke and ran out of the house for help but kim was trying to find her. >> i knew she came here first. like i said, we were very close. i know she ran here first because my car was still here. she probably thought i was home. i saw hand prints on the door. i knew she came here first. i know she did. >> reporter: the fire started in the front room of the home while kimberly and her daughter, kennedy, were in a bedroom. >> we believe both the mom a

i-95 and out to the east. prince george's county has been getting some fairly heavy snow. we've had fairly heavy snow moving right up here into the district as well. and then there's continuing to be heavy snow for prince william county up into fairfax county. what we're seeing now is a little bit of a lull back out to the west here from, say, loudoun county right out towards 81 and into west virginia. it is lightening up just a little bit as it is for frederick county as well. i think we're going to continue to see that for the next several hours, but this heavy snow band that you see in the red from southwest to northeast, it jumps right across the district, that will stay in place for quite a while. so i'm expecting at least during the early overnight period, that here in the district and parts to the east we'll actually be getting the heaviest of the snowfall and then by tomorrow morning another big general area of moderate to heavy snow will be forming as the coastal area of low pressure is forming. as sue as been hinting at as well, once that area of low pressure forms, the wi

christmas light display at watkins regional park in prince george's county. it begins friday and run every night from 5:00 until 9:30, light displays at the park's 25th annual winter festival lights and santa will be flying over with a helicopter and driving a fire truck. so $5 to get in and see the light displays and buses pay 25. the show will continue right through the beginning of january. if you're in the season and the feeling now for the season, this is a great way. after your christmas shopping all weekend, this is the way to get into it. in the meantime we've got sunshine and we don't have any snow to talk about, another sunny day ahead in my forecast for you. a cold front is headed our way, our next weathermaker, temperatures up and down across the board and some unsettled weather that will come in the days ahead. in the meantime today we were nowhere near temperatures for christmas, 63 degrees at national airport, 66 at dulles and look at this, a balmy 70 degrees at baltimore airport which is some 17 degrees warmer than the seasonal average for the day. that was a real tre

people in college park early yesterday morning. prince george's county police were breaking up a fight in the mcdonald's parking lot on baltimore avenue when someone in an suv opened fire. minutes later a university of maryland police officer spotted the suv and arrested the two men inside. 18-year-old melvin watson jr. and 20-year-old dekimbe david branson are charged with possession of a handgun and reckless endangerment. >>> the public got one last look inside the maryland mouse of correction in jessup today before it's torn down. the prison closed in 2007 after a series of violent attacks. the 130-year-old building will be deconstructed piece by piece and the inmates will learn skills to use after they serve their time. >> our parole is to give inmates a training and a certificate so when they're released, they're more employable and they stay out of jail. >> the final demolition will be done in about two years. inmates will then use bricks from the ole building to help construct a museum on the -- old building to help construct a museum on the grounds. >>> with heavy rains moving

george's county police say an off-duty d.c. cop fired at to men when tre tried to take his car. it happened just before 6:30 this morning on brooks drive in capitol heights. police claim the officer was parking when the suspects approached, pulled out a gun and demanded his keys. that's when the officer drew his police-issued gun. police say one of the men fired at the officer as they took off and he shot back. the officer wasn't hit, but he believes he may have hit one of the men. both suspects managed to get away. >>> a northeast woman devastated tonight after two pit bulls attacked and killed her dog. she was walking her schnauzer poodle mix named raven about 10:15 friday night when the dogs attacked raven. it happened near houston elementary school. jones tried to save her dog but there just wasn't much he could do. >> i tried to hold her to me but she was trying to pull away. i just let her go and told her to run fas but -- [ indiscernible ] they just pulled her and choked her like a rag doll. >> reporter: jones tells fox 5 she doesn't know who the pits belong to one was later

-year-old michael thomas sr. was a long time evening custodian in prince georges county. his wife, 62-year-old mildred freeman had worked for at least 20 years at the thrift store center on indian head highway. >> she was a very loving person. always very helpful. i have never seen her in a bad way. never. in all the years i've worked with her and i worked with her in this store and the george palmer store before that store was closed down. and she is just a very good person. >> since both partners and the couple worked opposite shifts, they tried to spend time together so michael would walk milly to the metro bus stop so she could go to work. on friday morning just before 7:00, the couple tried to cross oxen hill road in the middle of the 6200 block. the center lane is a left turn lane for traffic coming from either direction. many pedestrians use that lane as an island from the main traffic. police believe michael and milly were struck while standing in that middle lane. both pedestrians were gravely injured. the driver kept going. >> and sure, the fact is you took somebody's life.
