morning. a local teenager shot to death late last night. >> it happened at a home in prince george's county. police found the girl's body in that house on chartsey street. that's in the kettering neighborhood of upper marlboro. kristin fisher is there with a live update. chris continue, what more do we know about this kill -- kristin, what more do we know about this killing? >> reporter: this is the home where this 17-yard girl's body was found right around 11:00 last night. right now prince george's county police say they have no suspects, no motive. all they will say is they are investigating this as a possible home invasion. this is still a pretty active police scene here but i tell you what, just moments ago a truly heartbreaking scene to see. this 17-yard girl's body was -- 17-year-old girl's body was brought out, put in the coroner's van and standing watching the whole thing, the girl's mother. just incredibly difficult to watch. you can only imagine what she's going through right now. neighbors tell me the 17-year- old girl was hoping -- she aspired to go to harvard university

road. back to you. >>> prince george's county executive jack johnson is set to return to work this morning after being arrested friday. >> the fbi arrested johnson and his wife on charges in the government corruption investigation. >> this is anything but a normal monday, good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. believe it or not, jack johnson's spokesperson is saying this is going to be just another monday, but that's hard to believe when you take into account how often does a county executive show up to work wearing a court-ordered ankle bracelet? that is exactly what is expected to happen later today, just three days after jack johnson and his wife leslie johnson were arrested by the fbi. sources are saying more arrests are indeed possible later this week as well. this is all part of a massive corruption and bribery investigation, specifically involving allegations that johnson took bribes from a local developer. but as of now, the couple has only been charged with illegally destroying and tampering with evidence. the one element that has everyone talk recognize

learning more about the man prince georges county police say will be remembered as one of the most notorious serial killers in our history. he worked as a part-time employee at the u.p.s. facility. kristin fisher is joining us from prince georges county with more. >> reporter: good morning. police here say they will not release his name until he is formally charged, but one investigator is already calling this person of interest the most intelligent criminal he's ever dealt with. now prince georges county police now believe a 27-year- old upper marlboro man is responsible for last year's mother/daughter murders in largo. the person of interest is accused of killing two mother and daughter and he lived with his parents within a two mile radius of both sets of victims. he worked part time at u.p.s. in landover where he met customers and sold stolen weapons out of the trunk of his car. he was arrested on an array of gun charges and his criminal record includes -- prosecutors are trying to determine if he had access to work in that u.p.s. warehouse to a database that contained the addr

school for students in several systems including the district and prince george's county. 9news now reporter kristin fisher joins us live from temple hills maryland with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. it is a day that students have been dreading all summer long, the first day of school. about 127 students in prince george's county will be back to school. buses are behind people the bus drivers are gearing up getting ready to gone their first bus routes of the school year. a lot of other preparations going on over the weekend. you can see groups of prince george's county teachers spending the weekend getting their classrooms ready and decorated for the students. meanwhile school superintendents spent the final days of summer, sorting out the computer system. making sure they do not have a repeat of what happened last year when 8000 high school students were out of class for days because their schedules were incomplete. last year the superintendent blamed it on a computer glitch. this year he says they're good to go. the problem is fixed. students have received

guys. >>> the prince george's county police department is mourning the loss of a young officer and as they grieve, investigators are looking for two suspects. >> the same to people officer adrian morris was chasing when his patrol car crashed. jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park with the latest on the story. good morning, jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this is a huge loss for the prince george's county police department. they are mourning the loss of one of their own. he is officer adrian morris, just 23 years old, on the police force for just two years. the officer lost his life after a police chase yesterday. two prince george's county police officers were alerted to a car that may have been involved in an attempted car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. they were investigating. they pursued the suspect in their cruiser. but then the police car went off the road on 95 south landing in a ditch. witnesses say the alleged suspect may have tried to run the police officers off the road. officer morris was ejected from the vehicle. he

out in anne arundel county. 3,000 in howard county. just over a thousand in prince george's county. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is live at the last prince george's county school to get its power back. some kids are thankful. others not so much. good morning. >> reporter: i know. good morning. i know some parents will be very excited about this. after four days of no school for students here at glenarden woods elementary, the power is finally back on after hurricane irene. in fact, i just walked up over there. you can actually see some of the lights on inside. so, some great news for parents. but sorry, kids, the hurricane off days are over! it has been a rough start to the school year for prince george's county. keep in mind it was just last week when all 198 county schools were closed on wednesday due to the earthquake. then this week, with the aftermath of hurricane irene to deal with, 19 county schools were closed on tuesday. four were still closed on wednesday. and now friday, glenarden wood is the last school in the county to reopen since hurricane irene. now, there has

breaking news from prince georges county. that's where a maryland state trooper was shot this morning. it happened at forest village park mall and it sparked an area-wide search for the suspect. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher is following developments from the scene in forestville. kristin? >> good morning, andrea. well, right now the search is on for this gunman who shot this maryland state trooper this morning. it happened around 12:40 this morning right outside of this applebees. you can see it right over here, it is the applebees on darnell drive and pennsylvania avenue. all we know at this point in time is that this trooper had been with the force for 3 1/2 years and he was providing security at that applebees when the shooting took place outside in the parking lot. now we don't know what led up to the shooting or how many shots were fired. all we know is the trooper was shot and take on the the prince georges county hospital center in hyattsville. at this point in time, we do not know his condition. all we know is he has been taken to the hospital. as for the gunman, he's on

washington. we're done with it. it's ayos prince george's, anne arundel, charles county quickly pulling away. we'll go across the bay there to annapolis over to chestertown there on the eastern shore. occasionally moderate showers still leftover. as we make our tour down into southern maryland, and parts of southern virginia, this stuff is quickly falling apart there. waldorf, you may get one or two more sprinkles. this thing moves off toward the northeast. the bulk of the rain, the big rains have all gone. as we expand, we still see moderate shower as cross southern st. maries county over to the northern neck now. reedville, give yourself another half hour. if you are watching from the lower eastern shore, you can have another hour or so before this is out of here. one thing this will do is clean out the air for us. the allergy update yesterday, tree pollen for the second day in a row. very high, grasses, weeds and molds very low. we have cleansed it with the rain so there should be a little relief for the allergy sufferers. today breezy, low 60s, tomorrow low to mid-60s, even

residents in prince georges county to boil before drinking it. alex trevino has the latest details. >> reporter: good morning. we are near henson creek, an area where 50,000 residents of prince georges county are under a boil water advisory. a massive water main break is to blame. here's the water main break in henson creek that's causing the mess. the massive burst forced the boil water advisory and paula clinton could change they are morning routine. >> i can't take a cup over the faucet and fix my tea and coffee in the morning. >> frustrated because it could affect my health and i haven't been aware of it at all and have been drinking it. >> reporter: michael says water has been restored to residents with the caveat that it must be boiled for now. >> for a large break like this that affects tens of thousands of people we look to you and the media to get the word out. >> reporter: they are testing to make sure there isn't any contamination of the water in the area. and hopefully the washington area suburban commission will be able to lift the boil water advisory. live from prince

george's county school in maryland. mineral county schools and king george county in virginia. all two hour delay. >> what's going on, howard? >> we had a little bit of snow down south. half-inch, 3/4 of an inch. not a lot but enough to cause slick spots. schools will play it safe and go two hours late. mineral county, they have cold as well up there and some of the wind chills are below zero in far western maryland and west virginia. this morning as we look at the day planner, we could have a sunny day but a cold day. the last really cold day we'll see for awhile. right now, we're starting to clear out. 27 degrees. 30 by noon. by 5:00, 31. highs today only in the low 30s. winds northwest. that means your wind chills will be in the 20s. if you need to be outside. whether you're waiting at the bus or walking the dog, yeah, earmuffs, hats, you know the whole garb there. looking at the storm from last night, it was a glancing blow for us. down toward southeastern virginia, northeastern north carolina, they may see three or four inches of snow. we had a period of light snow, occasional

happened over the weekend at george mason university. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher is live on the campus with the latest. good morning, kristin. >> good morning, andrea. so far, gmu police declined to comment on all of our questions that we have tried to ask them on camera. so far they are not saying much at this point. except they are saying they did confirm that they are investigating han alleged sexual assault which took place over the weekend on campus and would say that fairfax county police are helping with that investigation. now, we do know a few other details. specifically the alleged sexual assault took place 5:00 sunday morning inside of one of the dorm rooms at madison hall and president's park. campus officials say the victim was acquainted with her attacker. for the most part students have been kept in the dark about the incident. >> shocked. i have never heard of anything like that happening on mason. >> awful. i hope that is not true. >> if there are police here, i feel it is more serious. >> reporter: right now no suspects are in custody. they spent sunday int

reports 2900 customers out this morning. 1100 in d.c. 1500 in prince george's county and 250 in montgomery counties. >> smeco has more than 17,000 customers without power. more than 8,000 apiece in st. mary's and calvert counties. >> dominion has 300,000 customers out but only 1,000 are in northern virginia while bge has about 160,000 customers out. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is following one busy crew working in laurel overnight. seems like they have a long ways to go, kristin. >> reporter: they do. but you know, bge certainly has the most outages. they've got the most work ahead of them. they've done a pretty decent job thus far. they were able to restore power to this intersection. take a look at this neighborhood, you can see it is still pitch-black. all of those folks in there, still dealing with absolutely no power. and bge is saying it could be until friday, saturday, possibly even later until they get power back on. so, right now, bge has about 2700 crews currently working to restore power. an additional 1500 are from out of state and that includes a fresh batch w

off tough in southern maryland here in accokeek where prince george's county police tell me they've been on the scene of a fatal accident since about 1:30 this morning. they believe it was a race involved there. driving southbound on 210, one of the cars veered on to the northbound lanes hitting a tractor trailer. they'll be there investigating for awhile. they've got 210 blocked between route 373 and farmington road. you can go ahead and use 373 over into brandywine and use route 5 to head up north to the beltway. here is another problem. this one is in arlington. more like the fort myer area. eastbound route 50 is closed down at north pershing drive. arlington county police tell me they're investigating a death there as well. i would say go ahead and use washington boulevard as your alternate route through there. 66 is ok. let's take you outside live. we'll start off with the southside of town. here's what it looks like at branch avenue. this is a good indication of the entire east side of the beltway. let's go to the other side right now. if you're planning to head over into mary

latest challenges facing the command center. >> the prince georges county snow command center has been working 24/7. some staff members are monitoring 100 cameras throughout the county. those cameras are showing them the kind of conditions. what they are telling us right now is between 85 and 90% of the primary roads in prince georges county are now passable. 85 to 90% of the roads are passible. in the southern part of importants county they have 50% because they have a lot of heavy snow drifts. the challenge they are facing, as they explained it to me, is imagine an ice and snow lasagna on the roadway with layers of compacted snow and ice and they need heavy equipment to break through those layers in order to put the salt down. that's what they are going to do today on the primary roads. breaking up on the ice and salting it so hopefully the sun can melt it later on today. show you the folks that are also working in the command center. those folks are there. they are basically talking to crews in the field. those crews are keeping them up to date on what is going on. all of them

power to the republicans. taking a look at the race, democrat tim kaine and republican george allen are duking it out for this senate seat being 78cateed by jim webb. he's the democrat that beat george allen four years ago. allen was governor from 1994 to 1998 during a time of economic growth in both the state and the nation. kaine was governor of virginia from 2006 to 2010 and guided the commonwealth through a sharp economic downturn. now, here's where both stand on key positions. kaine says he would allow the bush-era tax cuts to expire for incomes above $500,000 a year. that is twice the level proposed by the white house. he also supports taking away subsidizes for big oil companies. now, george allen favors lowering taxes for job-creating businesses. he would also like to simplify the tax code for individuals, possibly even offering a flat tax option for individual taxpayers. now right now the polls give kaine a three-point lead in virginia over allen, but that is within the margin of error, so right now it's looking like anybody's race. we are back at the election wall in 30 mi
