, george gascon. and it was a shocker. mayor newsom making the decision on saturday, the swearing in yesterday, and today george gascon becomes san francisco's first latino police chief and perhaps the first district attorney, i should say the first latino d.a. and he also becomes problems the first district attorney who has never prosecuted a criminal case. take a look at the ceremony yesterday at san francisco city hall. mayor newsom doing the swearing in. it really was kind of out of the blue. mayor newsom saying he was talking to gascon on saturday who gascon might like to be d.a. and all of a sudden newsom said there was a realization, hey, the man in front of me, he'd make a good d.a. and now he is the d.a. he has a law degree from western state college of law in fullerton. he practiced civil law about a year and a half back in the ' '90s. never prosecuted a criminal case. no problem says gascon. >> same thing as driving a black and white. different skill sets and i believe i have the organizational skills. >> gascon replaces carmella harris who moves on to be the state attorne

, really busy freeway. this is the capital beltway's inner loop in prince georges county where a large water main break closed all southbound lanes of interstate 95. as you might expect major traffic backups are reported as a result of this break and predawn temperatures were 10 degrees, well below freezing. what's that's doing is causing some of that water to freeze over. that has everything to do with the water main break in the first place. the spilled water now freezing over creating a layer of ice on the highway. no word when that 54-inch distribution line might get repaired and the freeway will be open. >> it's even worse than it was when we checked in a few minutes ago. it wasn't covering the vehicles. now look at it. it's fully covering it. >> right there on the freeway. >> 5:07 now. time for a check on our weather forecast. >> that could be a problem if we don't get rain also. i'm looking out the next 16 days, still nothing really to grab on to as a bona fide chance of rain. aren't i just full of great news. we do need some rain. we will get some eventually but this tends to h

father who had left a girl rolled up in a carpet. police have been looking for george rodriguez for two weeks now. they say he left a 3-year-old girl for dead rolled up in that carpet. >> 35-year-old george rodriguez is still on the loose. campbell police say he fled after beating his former girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter dejah. the little girl was found with a black eye, bruises on her face and stomach in this garage. police now say it was the suspect's son. a 15-year-old boy living in the house who discovered the little girl in rolled up carpet. police say dejah was picked up by a friend and taken to her mother. the 15-year-old troubled by the discovery eventually called police. by then, the girl's mother jane marin had disappeared with the child. two days later, the little girl and her mother were found in this shopping center parking lot near santa theresa boulevard and bernel road in san jose. this is place after finding them. >> it's an area that we have some information she may have had some friends in that area and so they developed some leads she was possibly going to thi

wife eliana lopez. friday story published in the chronicle, district attorney george gascon says he questions mirkarimi's sincerity in his plea because the sheriff said he agreed to avoid mounting legal bills. the judge will have to consider those factors. legal analyst dean johnson says a defendant can plea for any number of reasons. >> mirkarimi himself is not required to admit that he did the crime or describe the crime that he did. >> to remove mirkarimi is not a slam-dunk. there's no guarantee that the board going to vote to remove him if it gets to that final step. >> reporter: university of san francisco political scientist david ladderman says mayor lee faces a complicated decision after today's hearing. domestic violence advocates are calling on the mayor to suspend sheriff mirkarimi and have him removed. the chronicle is reporting this morning that the mayor's office has asked for the video of eliana lopez showing her bruised arm to her neighbor. mayor lee has not yet signaled what he is going to be doing with this case following the sentencing hearing later this morning.
