crop. but there could be a benefit for you. abc 7's heather reports from sonoma county. >> george martinelli is a fourth generation grower. he might have lost between 5 and 20% of his grapes to the heat. for other growers it could be more. the biggest losses will be from the chardonnay grape because of its thin skin. the burned brown fruit is useless, unsalvageable. the weather dealt a cruel hand this summer with months of cold and damp, leaves were cut away to expose the grapes to more light and help them ripen. then when exposed came the extreme heat. growers were helpless. >> you can apply water to them but once they're exposed to the sun, there's nothing you can do with that, especially 110 degree heat. >> on damaged bunches, the surviving grapes will ripen faster and the harvest could begin earlier. the extent of damage depends on the type of trellis system the grape and whether the rows run east/west where they feel the full impact of the sun. >> this is more protected because it's kind of what they call a california sprawl trellis system. so a lot of the fruit is inside the
