think of how many presidents have said they trusted vladimir putin going back to george w. bush, of course president obama, wisper ring little favors to vladimir putin in his ears and others ears and now, president trump. what do you make of all of this? >> well i don't make too much of it. i mean, here is what i think where the president is coming from. he believes that if he has a relationship, a personal relationship with another head of state, that that gives him some leverage to work tough issues. it doesn't mean that he's making any accommodations to that leader on management policy. i know for a fact that that team that surrounds him on national security to a person is very clear eyed about russia. they know that russia sees the united states as their strategic enemy. russia is an an adversary of the united states. they're tram alling on our allies interest in europe. they're trampling on our interest in the middle east and they are aligned politically with iran and helping north korea as we come to find out now , so yes, we have to go in and talk to the russians to be sure.

administration whether you look at the george bush administration. bill clinton was impeached. the last two years of bush the father, he was defeated. before that -- the last two years are -- >> no doubt, no doubt. on the economy, the president wants to reestablish, modify, he keeps referring to the fact we are off the map now as far as jobs are concerned. many in the administration pointed to the record close and the dow and the markets more than doubled, yet, he is not benefiting. do you think this is something of more lasting concern to democrats that no matter what happens, and even if the pick up continues, you are not going to get credit and people aren't going to buy it? >> look, i think that's exactly what they are afraid of. now, i think we have had improvement. it's hard to say we haven't had improvement. i think it's equally fair to say it hasn't been that great. it doesn't feel gang busters. that's why you haven't had more enthusiasm, let's call it, for embracing how the economy is doing. i think it's going to be a tough per yo period. the demographics of who votes is different.

statue of george washington praying right in front of the pope as i recall. so i think this continues that tradition, certainly prayer has a way of healing. there's a lot of brokenness, as you say, a lot of division in the country. what i find remarkable is how much prayer. i mean, he has set now a record for six prayers on the day of the inauguration. and now of course continuing the tradition and the cathedral there, the national cathedral. so i think it's encouraging. if people can direct their attention to the transcendent, i think we get a better perfect expectancy what's going on. neil: do you think the president gets to pick what religions are represented? i only ask that because there's a member of the muslim church there. so all key religions, at least nine by my account are represented in that cathedral. >> well, i'm sure the president had a great deal to say about it. certainly, the people he appointed. and i think it would be unconscionable had he left a muslim -- muslims out of it. you had representatives there, mormon an, catholic, a whole array of groups. it's really de
