from the family physician of accused killer george zimmerman, and it could become an important piece of evidence here because the day after martin was shot and killed, zimmerman visited his doctor. according to the records, he had a closed fracture of his nose and two black eyes, two lacerations to the back of his head, and a minor back injury as well. martin savidge is joining us live from the cnn center in atlanta. martin, these developments seem to bolster zimmerman's argument that he killed trayvon martin in self-defense. >> that could be argued in two different directions, zoraida. the attorney that represents the family of trayvon martin is going to say it it doesn't necessarily prove that because what we don't know, despite the medical information that's coming now out of the discovery documents -- and this is all the information that the prosecution is now bringing forward that they have filed and must make available to the defense team. this is why this information is coming out now of the the special prosecutor, angela curry's office filed this information on monday. the me

the murder of his ex-girlfriend. george huguely ultimately convicted of second degree murder in the death of ex-girlfriend yeardley love. the jury recommended a sentence of 26 years in prison. cnn legal contributor paul call an here to talk this one through. it was just this time yesterday, paul, we were talking about the options this jury had. they could have gone all the way, could have gone first degree. ultimately settled for second degree, but it still could mean a lot of time in the prison. so what's the situation? what is he facing and what could this judge ultimately decide to do? >> this is a very, very serious charge. it's called second degree murder, but essentially it's murder with malaise. it's intentional murder. he's facing a stengsing range, it could have been 5 to 40 years. now that the jury has recommended 26 years the judge in virginia can give up to 26 years as the maximum sentence. so that would put him well into his 40s by the time he's out of prison. i should mention that in virginia they've eliminated the parole board so whatever time you're sentenced to you

once. president george w. bush six times. bill clinton, 14 times. president george h.w. bush, just once. and ronald reagan three. so all over the place, but once or twice during the course of an administration, you'll see it. so big question, i guess, what happens next. a vote on contempt in the full house would be next, assuming there's no negotiated settlement, which is typically what happens in these cases. after that, it would be referred to the united states attorney for the district of columbia, which, by the way, is headed by attorney general holder. that's the justice department. so kind of unlikely that the justice department would agree to prosecutor its own attorney general. that, of course, means a thing like this could be thrown into the courts which could go on for years. most of the time what you see in situations like this is some type of negotiated settlement. the question would be whether disclosure of the information the committee is seeking could be arranged by letting just a few people look at it or narrowing the kinds of questions that are asked of a witness,
