the bay area come from cars. >>> let's check the car situation in the bay area with george. how is it looking out there? >> cars, cars and more cars on interstate 580 in the westbound direction. as we continue to track big delays here, this is our big traffic story this morning as the 580 ride. we have had a pair of accidents and remarkably neither of these crashes blocked any lanes but there was debris kicked up in the lanes on our first crash at grant line. the second one at north flynn taking an awfully long time to clear. pretty clear here, though on the nimitz freeway as you can see. look at that drive time, just 16 minutes from 238 san leandro into downtown oakland. here at the bay bridge inching toward the maze but not into it yet, 18 to 19 minutes your trip time for the westbound ride. and let's give the south bay some love here, green showing on most of the roadway sensors but a little slow on 101 from 280 north to 880. >>> roberta, how is the weather? >> we are going to cool down significantly today. going to feel the difference at the coast and around the bay. good morning,

. it's going to be some fun there. weather watcher time. george hughes in san francisco, i wanted to feature george this morning -- well, primarily because he is a really great guy but because he is reporting clear skies in san francisco. we have a hint of stratus next to the coast and that's about it. otherwise, the winds are breezy in san francisco to 12. calm in pleasanton. calm in fairfield. but these winds later today out of the southwest and rotating to the west, 10 to 20 miles per hour. so not as blustery as yesterday. but again, because of that drier air mass in place, from the passage of that upper level area of low pressure, all the stratus is scouring out except a little hint of clouds at the san mateo coast. so there goes the low after producing three to six inches of snow in the high sierra back through half dome and yosemite. this morning, i have been picking up a flurry or two but that's about it. autumn arrives today. the first day of fall of after 1:02 p.m. warmer weather for the weekend and looking ahead, temperatures spike and fire danger increases. so the low is s

. good morning, george hughes in san francisco. partly cloudy conditions and 46. sure enough, we have some lingering clouds over the city by the bay. those clouds all associated with yesterday's weak impulse that raced through the bay area. dumping anything from a trace to .13-inch of rain. we are in the 30s in san jose. 45 in oakland. a few lingering clouds this morning. it's going to be warmer today than it has been in so many days. we are inching our way back into the low 60s and then we are tracking a brand-new storm. it is a cold front. it will be the first storm of the month of december. and here you can see the leading edge of the clouds with some light precipitation banging up against the northwestern quadrant of the state of california. futurecast, the timing could be off but this is what we are crunching our data together and forecasting as of right now. mostly cloudy wednesday. that's the leading edge of the cold front bringing precipitation to the north bay by the morning commute. quickly sagging to the south into the santa clara valley affecting your thursday morning comm

against george w. bush. their debate is tomorrow night on kpix 5 starting at 6 p.m. right here on kpix 5. >>> monster waves near half moon bay are bringing rock star surfers and excited spectators to the coast. mavericks kicks off in just a few hours. and anne makovec joins us live in half moon bay where the best surfers from around the globe are gathered. hi,anne. >> reporter: yeah, a lot of excitement surrounding this competition. most of the action is going to take place about a half mile offshore from pillar point which is here behind me and the competition starts at 7:30 a.m. it is called the "titans of mavericks" contest. a one-day invitation-only event. 24 surfers came from all over the world to take on waves expected to rise above 20 feet today. now, once it starts, the coast guard will have a perimeter set up around the competition area to keep boaters away. organizers will be filming the surfing action from the waters nearby and, of course, there will be plenty of choppers overhead. surfers had 48 hours to get here to half moon bay. organizers made the call on tuesday. >> you k

looks like they have temperatures in the 40s and in the 50s. 52 degrees right there. that says george hughes, the winds under 5 miles per hour under mostly cloudy skies. we have the clouds and they will continue to thicken across the bay area today because of another storm. it is system number 2. this one is not as strong as the one we experienced yesterday. but nonetheless, it has dozens and dozens of lightning strikes associates with it. can you see them there? the northwest coast in between eureka and the mendocino area right there we have a couple of lightning strikes that are next to the radar site from the national weather service. so far this has been all cloud- to-cloud lightning not cloud-to- ground lightning. so we haven't seen any impact as far as any dangerous conditions are concerned. i just picked up a lightning strike here just about one minute ago. it looks like that one has now since gone away but we do have thunderstorms in the forecast entering the mendocino area. mostly cloudy skies. partly cloudy skies in san jose 48. we have winds up to about 10 miles per hour so
