this morning in prince george's county. the search for his killer is ongoing at this time. good morning and welcome to news 4 midday, i'm eun yang, in for barbara harrison, today, friday, june 11th, 2010. we begin with breaking news out of prince george's county where the manhunt continues this midday for the man who shot and killed an off-duty maryland state trooper. trooper first class wesley brown was killed overnight outside of an applebee's in forestville. he was working there as a security guard. news 4's megan mcgrath has been on the scene all morning long. she joins with us the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. police say it was like an ambush. trooper wesley brown was providing security here at the applebee's, right around midnight he escorted a disorderly patron, customer out of the restaurant. but things seemed to calm down after that. about 30 minutes passed and trooper brown was talking on his cell phone when investigators say that angry patron returned with a gun and opened fire. the shots were fired without warning and that trooper brown didn't

outages officials are just beginning to assess the damage in prince george's county. it is not just the countless downed trees they are dealing with. flood sing causing headaches. yesterday water street was inundated with water from a nearby creek. it has since started to recede but water street is still closed. news4's megan mcgrath is joining us now from temple hills with the survey of the damage out there. megan, good morning. what do you see today? >> reporter: good morning. we began our day on water street. it was covered. it was closed making it difficult for folks who work in upper marlboro to get to their offices. that's a popular route and closed to both directions because of the high water. we are here in temple hills where we are still seeing widespread power outages. now you can see behind me here a lot of folks have generators. this one on this carport but there are many people who do not. that means that they have been in the dark now for days. >> you can see the water is up to the doorknob roup when the electricity went out, so did chris wells' pumps and the basement

george's county, you could be in for a rough couple of days. wssc is asking all of it's customers to restrict their water use for at least the next four days after the crews found a failing section of a massive 96-inch water main in potomac. that main is near tuckerman lane at gains borrow road near winston churchill high school. megan mcgrath is live in potomac and has the latest. >> reporter: this is a massive water main. 96 inches. to put it in perspective, the river road water main that caused so many problems when it ruptured, that was a 66-inch main. so this is much, much larger. you can see here the scene that we have, wssc crews are beginning their work, emergency repairs on this water main. it is at the intercession or near the intercession of gains borrow and tuckerman road. that fiber optic system detected a problem. a failing section inside this large pipe. emergency repairs are going to be necessary. until those repairs are complete and they haven't gun yet, they are saying that people are going to have to cut their use of water by a third. these are mandatory water rest

police department, also prince george's county police department, all of the police department here at the church. 31-year-old montgomery county police officer sergeant hector ayala lass was brought in just a little while ago. he died in the line of duty on sunday after his cruiser left the roadway striking a tree. he was on his way to assist another officer. he served with the montgomery department since 2003. fluent in spanish, he was considered a major part of the montgomery county police department, working the midnight shift, often serving as an interpreter and decorated for the work he's done here on the job. he leaves behind his wife, who was pregnant with triplets and also their young son. is he spoke with colleagues here today who say that they are here with heavy heart. >> it's a sad day for all of us here at the department. to lose an officer, such a tragic event is very sad for us all. you can see support this brings, it gets you in the heart. very heartfelt. very warming to see the response we get. >> that response is absolutely breathtaking. anytime we will attend these f
