shan leaves the national zoo for china. kristin fisher is at the zoo with more on these detailed plans. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. three hours until tai shan is boarded in to a fedex truck, driven to dulles airport and then heading heading he gets on a plane to china. joining me is one of the panda's veterinarians. thanks for joining us. i know this is a bittersweet morning for you guys. how is everyone doing the staff members and zookeepers that have worked with tai shan over the years. >> obviously we are all sad to see tai shan go. he has been here four year and has become a big part of dc and the national zoo. we are sad to see him go but are excited and happy he will be going back to china to help the conservation efforts and be put in to a breeding program. >> a lot of washingtonians are very upset they won't be able to come and see their beloved giant panda. what are the chances of another panda being born at the zoo. >> we are all keeping our fingers crossed. we have may shawn. and she did undergo an artificial insemination procedure in early januar

the u.s. has -- high deficits, but the u.s. has made it before. >> china owns a lot of the debt. how does that affect the relationship here in. >> china does own a tremendous amount of u.s. debt. but there are a lot of other countries in mix here as well. total outstanding debt of the u.s., china owns about a quarter of all of it in the united states. but it's only been purchasing about $76 billion in u.s. treasuries in the past 12 months, actually means that china has been a fractional buyer of late. the risk here ultimately china will say the u.s. no longer locks good to us as a long-term investment and it dumps the debt on the open market. that's bad news for the u.s. economy. but china backing away slowly from the u.s. because of the debt situation, that could be a good thing for us actually. >> really? that's what it means is that it's a good sign? >> ultimately here we have a bad situation and a bad debt situation. but ultimately the economy looks pretty stable and we can make it through this. >>> they are getting an earful on capitol hill about the debate. phone lines and webs
