back when china took one of america's airplanes? they held the airplane hostage? the only thing they demanded to get the airplane back was an apology from the united states. here's the most populous nation on the face of the earth, china. they want to save face. if the most populous nation wants to save face, i mean, everybody wants to save face. it's the human condition. so when you enter into a crisis negotiation like that, the thing is you have to let the other side save face. and you have to really work toward a solution. you have to respect the other side. the president, the white house, and the senate has to respect the fact that the other side represents a large portion of the american voter. >> i think there is respect on the part of the white house for the other side. they're just not sure of what's really in charge. it keeps shifting in terms of who's really in charge. i think it's a little bit hard to figure out to who to convey that respect to. fourth, your last tip, be mag n magnanimous. i've got sound. >> if republicans have specific ideas on how to genuinely improve th

passengers were killed. both teenage girls headed to the united states from china. while many others are in critical condition and some paralyzed. we are awaiting a press conference scheduled to begin at about 4:30 eastern time. for the latest we are joined by noel walker. thanks for joining me. what is the latest at this point in san francisco at the airport there? >> reporter: the plane is still behind me. we are stuck in time. they are going to keep it there right now. this is the ntsb says their first chance to get a look at what is happening by the light of day. they arrived here and got to the plane at about midnight. they combed through that and recovered the black boxes, sent them with with an escort. probably within the next 24 hours we could get our first look at what those black boxes hold, if any kind of information. preliminary reports we could get within the next 24 hours. we have six people still in critical condition in hospitals here in the bay area. among those one child. we are also told that two people in this crash are likely facing paralysis. >> with regard to t

occurred really throughout the last several decades, throughout africa, russia, throughout china. we haven't always got involved with civilians' deaths. >> show the the new and improved rand paul? or is this a new and improved messaging from the republican party? >> well, it is new and improved messaging from rand paul. he is rebranding isolationism as realism, basically. and he is co-opting the old realist wing of the republican party represented by george h.w. bush, he is considerably different from them though because they are actually internationalists. and i think there's a pretty good case that rand paul is the real deal. a real taftian isolationist. and we thought that when eisenhower defeated taft for the 1952 republican nomination, that was sort of the end of republican isolationists for, well, more than half a century. and it has come roaring back. >> you know, how does this, that isolationist stance, position rand paul for 2016. some could argue it might help with younger vote here are very war weary. others would suggest that programs it shows naivete on the world stage.

airlines fly 370 still missing. a massive search operation is under way in the south china sea for any sign of the plane, possible wreckage or its passengers. >> reporter: hi, karen. it's the mid of the night in that part of the world now. rescuers are waiting for dawn in a few hours' time so they can resume the search by air, looking for any trace of this malaysian airlines flight, trying to look for any wreckage. the on reported sightings have been from two vietnamese planes who said they saw two oil sliks around 6 x 9 miles that would be consistent with the iengines an fuel of an airliner of that size. we're not going to get much more until daylight when the search can continue. it's a big multi-national search. we've had airplanes and vessels from countries like singapore, malaysia, china and the united states has been helping, too. >> thank you, duncan, in london. we'll be right back. know, picking him up and holding him against me. it wasn't just about me anymore. i had to quit. couple hours, they'll be joined by these two military planes from china and japan. for the latest, we turn to nbc's tom costello. >> good afternoon. a couple pieces of information we're watching closely from the malaysian authorities today. number one, authorities said something that contradicted information that u.s. authorities have provided to us last week. u.s. authorities last week said they had information that suggested that the plane when it came up here and was headed towards vietnam, that it sent an acars data burst, a burst of transmitted information about the plane, which in that burst said the plane had already had a preprogrammed flight path to do a u-turn and come back. that's what u.s. authorities said last week. a preprogrammed u-turn. today malaysian authorities said they've looked at the acars data and that's not true. they contradicted what u.s. authorities said in terms of whether this u-turn coming back over the strait of malacca and malaysia, whether that was, in fact, preprogrammed. the malaysian authorities say there's no evidence to suggest that whatsoever. s
