explain why some markets are down. >> china, china and china. >> that's a good banner. china today, wen jiabao, the premier of china, the first time in eight years speaking to the national congress there saying to the peoples national congress saying we'll lower our growth target to 7.5%. that's still a lot. but that shows you china is trying to focus on quality in its economy, not speed. chinese growth has been gang busters for 30 years. at least double digit, mostly double digit growth in china's economy over the past 30 years. they're trying to slow it down just a little bit, reign it in, focus on quality over just speed there. this pertains to commodities, metals, stocks, anything you can think of in financial markets will be affect by this. i want to show you quickly how china compares to the rest of the world. china is the driver. eu growth is forecast at 0%. nothing. nothing. that's painful. zero is painful. europe still has a lot of work to do. china, even with a slower growth target if they can manage to slow it down, 7.5%. i want to real quickly focus on another thing, too. mi

typically the top nerd on the desk. there's been a battle brewing between ipad here and ipad in china who is going to use the name. >> you always think, you step back and think what's in a name. for apple especially everything is in a name. what's ironic is you think about when the ipad first came out, we all made fun of the ipad, there were all of those spoofs. where did they come up with the name ipad. the world's most valuable company has been locked head to head in the lawsuit with a company in china called pro view, they make these monitor force computers. and at issue here was, who owns the name, ipad. this company pro view or apple and apple said what happened when it bought the ipad trademark from pro view to use in several companies. but chinese authorities said the rights in china weren't transferred. so after two years of back-and-forth, it was settled for $60 million. it isn't about the money. that's not a big deal for apple. for apple, it was about sales, it was hurting sales, sales wise in china. apple has its biggest sales. china is apple, it has a fourth of apple's big

brazil, india, china, they are competing with the u.s. for supplies around the world. you've also got the concerns we've talked about with iran and all of the sort of the rabbling that the iranians are doing. and you've got people talking about going into the springtime and the summertime that you could see prices going up. i want to be very careful about forecasting gas prices because i think it could be unpredictable. i hope you can see this. the darker it is, the more -- the higher the price is. and then when you look at gas prices by a state, when you look at how much you spend on your income, when you put income and gas prices together, you can see that in the south, people spend an awful lot of their income on gas prices. mississippi, 14% of their income is spent on gasoline. the darker, that's gas prices and percent of income, look at where all of these primaries are coming up, guys. you're going to have politics playing out in a place where people spend a lot of their money on gasoline prices. >> is that just gasoline? >> that's just gasoline. because they pay less for heating

? because china. china is showing signs it's slowing down. it kaim in with its economic growth showing that china grew at an annual rate of only 8.1%. sure, that sounds great compared to our economic growth, which is 3%, but we're used to these double-digit figures with china. also china is it one of our biggest trading partners. if china slows down that means it won't buy as much stuff from us. i'm talking about stuff like automobiles, things from cisco and ibm, things from caterpillar, heavy machinery for construction over in china. so you add to those worries europe sloeg down. those are two of our biggest trading partners. that weighs on investors' minds. corporate earnings season continues to really roll in foost and furious this week with banks clocking in with their corporate earnings reports getting retail sales today. there is expected to be more volatility this week unless, of course, we kget some good news that could move the markets higher. >> let's hope for that so you can be the bearer of good news. >> i'm very excited about this next number that you're bringing to us, al

are worried about a lot of things, a slowdown in europe and china, not to mention right here in the u.s. after the dismal jobs report that showed in may we only had 69,000 jobs added to the workforce. the thing is, the economy is growing, but it's not growing fast enough because you see other indications, too. manufacturing slowed down. consumer spending was up in april. it's rising faster than incomes. that's not what you want to see. there's also another thing weighing on the economy, here what's known as the fiscal cliff. that's when you'll see the tax cuts expire, meaning higher rates are going to go into effect. more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts. they'll go into effect as well. lots of cuts at the pentagon. the problem with this is you'll see all this stuff happening all at once. what the congressional budget office says is this will take $500 billion out of the economy. they're predicting if this fiscal cliff happens all at once by early next year, you'll see the economy going into a recession. this is from the cbo. that's the bad stuff. there are a few bright

syria. we talked to you yesterday. we mentioned this nonbinding resolution. china and russia are on board with it. but will it have an impact? >> at this point, it's very hard to see exactly how it will change things on the ground certainly. as you point out this u.n. resolution is nonbinding. as not a security council resolution which would have some kind of legal impact. it's effectively just a big piece of people in which people say officially together through the u.n. what they've been saying beforehand together at the same time after this lengthy diplomatic car fufle over the past week or so. on the ground we hear from arwa damon that's in homs that shelling began at 7:00 a.m. and it's continuing intensely. as i think you just heard from danny early on, that diplomacy of the past few months, specifically the veto by russia and china which prevented the last security council resolution from getting through, that will be judged very harshly by history. let's hear what he had to say. >> how do you think history will judge the diplomacy of the past few months? >> for the last few m

concern about a slowdown in china, germany and the u.s., weak manufacturing data, the data if all of these countries a little bit weak yesterday, plus goldman sachs put out a report saying investors should sell s&p 500 stocks. meaning sell them and let the prices drop and buy them later at a cheaper price. the s&p 500 dropped 30 points yesterday or 2% and the buzz about the bank downgrades pushed stocks lower. futures are up. whatever happened yesterday happened you're going to feel it in your 401(k), but right now futures are up a little bit, which we could see a bounce in the open, which tends to happen. >> by market open we could be sailing in the clear? >> i don't think we're going to regain almost 250 points. the other thing that's important for everyone to know, look we've seen these little signs for several months that the world is slowing and when europe is slowing and world demand is slowing, that means jobs in this country are not going to grow. all of this goes back to your 401(k), your ability to get a job and there's also an election. >> i still can't believe you said

subcontractors in china. ships it all over the world. and they're making things that we never knew we needed. but can't live without. apple is up 40%, 50% every year. look at the stocks. you see the shares of apple computer, just this year, are up almost 45%. we crossed $500 a share about a month ago. and then, crossed $600 a share four weeks later. sitting on this cash, in just the fiscal quarter of the annual year, $16 billion. in cash. money that goes right into the bank. a lot of analysts are saying they think this company is going to get a dividend. shareholders of the company will get a little money back. maybe 2%. maybe 2.5%. a lot of tech companies give money back to their investors, to their shareholders. that's what folks are hoping will happen here. it will make apple more valuable. you have the mutual funds and all the value investors and investors who want to get a return back for holding their apple shares, instead of the stock going up and up. >> i wonder where the top is, although, right? >> that's such a good question. there's two adages on wall street. one is the tre
