china, people flocking to the china mobile store to get the first iphones which are now on sale in the country. how big a deal is the launch? big enough that apple's ceo was on hand to autograph iphones for customers in china. cnn's david mckenzie live in beijing. david, why is this launch so important to apple? does it have something to do with, oh, 700 million potential customers? >> reporter: christine, yeah, more than double the entire population of the u.s. that's what could be the new base for customers and apple here. they did a deal with china mobile, the major cell carrier here, and that deal was six years in the making. you just saw how tim cook came here, really putting his face on this deal. it's taken six years and it's taken many trips from the ceo in recent months to ink this deal. what it does mean is it could mean 10 million or 20 million more iphones sold in china this year, and it is a boost for apple in china, which has been struggling a little bit against its competitors. >> apple's still far behind as the biggest provider in china. what about price? that's goi

forthcoming with the details, for leaving the search last week focused for so long on the south china sea, when radar records by the malaysians themselves clearly showed that the plane had left the south china sea on route to the indian ocean. so, all of these things add up. while the search continues to expand, new zealand, australia, south korea, japan, the united states and other countries all offering up aerial resources for reconnaissan reconnaissance, trying to cover much of that southern quadrant there, the countries like india and pakistan saying that we have searched our radar records, we have no trace of this aircraft. we're still waiting to hear from a number of countries as they try to eliminate the possibilities here. we're not in a position to pinpoint the plane, to look for the positive. many times in this investigation, at least at this point, john, they're going to have to settle just to eliminate some of the possibilities that did not happen. >> no, rule things out. that can be crucial in any investigation. jim, there is a new report in "the new strait times" suggest

photos from sunday show large pieces of something floating in the south china sea along the plane's planned route from kuala lumpur to beijing, but overnight, vietnamese planes flew over that area looking for evidence of just what happened to the jet. they found nothing. now, this happens as there's really a stunning, new report from the "wall street journal," suggesting that engine data shows the plane may have flown for four more hours after it disappeared from the radar. just think of the possible implications there. how far could the plane have gone? why would it have kept flying without contact for four more full hours? so many questions raised by this report. we are awaiting a live briefing from malaysian officials about the search efforts as they stand at this hour. let's go now to jim clancy live in kuala lumpur with the latest. a lot to discuss, jim. >> reporter: john, some disappointment there with the vietnamese reports coming back from the scene of where they should have found some debris spotted by a chinese satellite. the chinese aren't dissuaded at all. the premier sa

a battle brewing between ipad here and ipad in china who is going to use the name. >> you always think, you step back and think what's in a name. for apple especially everything is in a name. what's ironic is you think about when the ipad first came out, we all made fun of the ipad, there were all of those spoofs. where did they come up with the name ipad. the world's most valuable company has been locked head to head in the lawsuit with a company in china called pro view, they make these monitor force computers. and at issue here was, who owns the name, ipad. this company pro view or apple and apple said what happened when it bought the ipad trademark from pro view to use in several companies. but chinese authorities said the rights in china weren't transferred. so after two years of back-and-forth, it was settled for $60 million. it isn't about the money. that's not a big deal for apple. for apple, it was about sales, it was hurting sales, sales wise in china. apple has its biggest sales. china is apple, it has a fourth of apple's biggest sales next to the u.s. especially with

china and iran to try to reach a negotiated deal. >> reza one question i think would have to be asked. when amadinejad speaks it's different. do we know where he was during all of this last communication or has he weighed in at all in this kind speak towards our president? >> reporter: well, here's what everyone should know. there's a reason that ayatollah khamenei is named the supreme leader. the final decisions rest with him. any decision that has to do with the nuclear program rests with ayatollah khamenei. it's impossible to get inside his mind and see what he's thinking about the nuclear program and if he has decided to build a bomb. i think that's the problem with this iran debate. there's a lot of speculation, political commentary, bluster and rhetoric that sometimes could distort reality. if you look at the facts, the facts show that there's no evidence made public that iran is actually building a bomb. that doesn't mean many countries aren't very worried that they one day will have the capability. now how to stop that nuclear program, that's the dilemma. many observers

brazil, india, china, they are competing with the u.s. for supplies around the world. you've also got the concerns we've talked about with iran and all of the sort of the rabbling that the iranians are doing. and you've got people talking about going into the springtime and the summertime that you could see prices going up. i want to be very careful about forecasting gas prices because i think it could be unpredictable. i hope you can see this. the darker it is, the more -- the higher the price is. and then when you look at gas prices by a state, when you look at how much you spend on your income, when you put income and gas prices together, you can see that in the south, people spend an awful lot of their income on gas prices. mississippi, 14% of their income is spent on gasoline. the darker, that's gas prices and percent of income, look at where all of these primaries are coming up, guys. you're going to have politics playing out in a place where people spend a lot of their money on gasoline prices. >> is that just gasoline? >> that's just gasoline. because they pay less for heating

? because china. china is showing signs it's slowing down. it kaim in with its economic growth showing that china grew at an annual rate of only 8.1%. sure, that sounds great compared to our economic growth, which is 3%, but we're used to these double-digit figures with china. also china is it one of our biggest trading partners. if china slows down that means it won't buy as much stuff from us. i'm talking about stuff like automobiles, things from cisco and ibm, things from caterpillar, heavy machinery for construction over in china. so you add to those worries europe sloeg down. those are two of our biggest trading partners. that weighs on investors' minds. corporate earnings season continues to really roll in foost and furious this week with banks clocking in with their corporate earnings reports getting retail sales today. there is expected to be more volatility this week unless, of course, we kget some good news that could move the markets higher. >> let's hope for that so you can be the bearer of good news. >> i'm very excited about this next number that you're bringing to us, al

are worried about a lot of things, a slowdown in europe and china, not to mention right here in the u.s. after the dismal jobs report that showed in may we only had 69,000 jobs added to the workforce. the thing is, the economy is growing, but it's not growing fast enough because you see other indications, too. manufacturing slowed down. consumer spending was up in april. it's rising faster than incomes. that's not what you want to see. there's also another thing weighing on the economy, here what's known as the fiscal cliff. that's when you'll see the tax cuts expire, meaning higher rates are going to go into effect. more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts. they'll go into effect as well. lots of cuts at the pentagon. the problem with this is you'll see all this stuff happening all at once. what the congressional budget office says is this will take $500 billion out of the economy. they're predicting if this fiscal cliff happens all at once by early next year, you'll see the economy going into a recession. this is from the cbo. that's the bad stuff. there are a few bright
