to the year since 1932. the problem in a word, china. take a look at the close. the dow lost 276 points, the if you can believe it, it could have been a lot worse. earlier in the day, the dow dipped below 17,000. check it out. it dropped nearly 470 points before bouncing back. what on earth happened? we saw a dip in manufacturing in china. that was a big deal. that sent the chinese markets into such a tailspin, they halted trade there today. stocks were down 7 percent. they shut it down for the day. u.s. manufacturing numbers this morning also showed weakness and we have tensions between iran and saudi arabia. it has been a rough day all around. what do you take from this? there is an old saying that as january goes, so goes the year. it is right most of the time. we're talking 75 percent of the year. remember, this is just one day. we have a whole month left to set the tone for 2016. what a lousy way to kick things off. it was a bad start to 2016 and 2015 wasn't the greatest on the markets. the dow and s & p had a rough end to the year. it's not the way you want to kick things o

going on? there are major concerns about the global economy, particularly in china. news that factory activity there slowed down big time has everybody worried that china's weak economy could trigger problems everywhere. all of that has people questioning when the feds will raise rates, something we thought would be before the end of the year. that has everyone jittery and selling. another big issue, oil. it dipped below $40 a barrel. that hasn't happened since 2009. oil did close back up above $40, but oil prices have been on a losing streak for the summer. that's something we haven't seen since the mets last won the world series and pacman was cool. >> more uplifting business news, a & p's bankruptcy issues hitting close to home. they gave layoff notices to 4,000 workers in its new jersey stores. they effective thanksgiving day. it affects 45 days in new jersey that they're selling as part of their bankruptcy plan. they have told 900 workers they could face layoffs in september. steve: and contact lens wearers' warning. sharon crowley shows us. >> do you wear them in the sho

not have happened. we had a little stability in china, a nice jobs report. this should have been a very good day, but it wasn't. here's today's close. the dow lost 167 points, a lot happening in the last minutes of trade. we were up 100 at the start. but instead, we're going home for the weekend down a thousand points on the week, just a according to the is index, it over a trillion gone this week. that's a horrible way to kick off the new year, one of the worst ever. if it continues, you will have everybody talking about january setting a bear market tone for 2016. what was the problem today? oil killed us again. u.s. oil closed at 33.16 today. brent crude, global oil, that dropped to prices we haven't seen since 2004. that dragged the markets right into the red. there was a bright spot this morning. the december jobs report. let's totally not ignore that. it should have set us up for a good day. the report was better than expected. we wanted to see 200,000 jobs added. we got 292,000. unemployment held steady at 5 percent in line. you had a nice spike at the open. everybody's happ

and china's professional team and it looks like they are prevailing. the players and coaches from both sides got together to meet. an update. wisdom, what happened? >> the coach and two other georgetown basketball players met with members of the chinese basketball team that they brawled with and that meeting was described as cordial and friendly. this video was taken by a cell phone. pushing and shoving turned into an all-out brawl. players were punching each other. chairs were being thrown. people in the stands were throwing bottles. the coach had to take his players off the floor and into the locker room once things calmed down. at this point, there are no reports of any serious injuries. then you fast forward to today and there is this meeting between both teams, players, and coaches from both teams before leaving that meeting, they were signing autographed basketballs. it looks like everything is okay right now. so after all that, the chair throwing, the punching, the fighting, everything appears to be okay between georgetown and china. >> that's good news. we want a little go
