reported on a group of maryland high school students who were quarantined in china when many of them were stricken. the university of maryland school of medicine is looking for volunteers, healthy adults and seniors first. if they tolerate it well, then they'll test the vaccine on children. maryland is looking to recruit a thousand volunteers for its clinical trials, the goal to see if the vaccine currently produced by two manufacturers is safe to try and stay a step ahead of the disease. >> we have 766 confirmed cases in the state and three flu- related deaths. we know there are many, many times that many cases that are in the community at large. >> reporter: scientists acknowledge there could be adverse reactions to the vaccine as with other seasonal flu vaccines. >> the most common reactions are a flu-like illness where you can get some fever and aches, not feel very well. >> reporter: dr. cutloff is the lead investigator in maryland's clinical trials. she's hoping any reaction will be minor and well worth the results: a successful vaccine. the plan is to give volunteers two doses
