china. and sherry ly is joining us live from the zoo in northwest with more on this story. it's kind of a bittersweet story for us, isn't it, sherry? >> reporter: it is. it's hard to face reality. we've known this is coming but yet people are still in disbelief. because as we've watched tai shan grow up, a lot of people in the area consider him one of their own. they come here to see him all of the time and this is the only home tai shan has known since he was born and he'll be headed back to china and will go back early next year so it is time to say goodbye to tai shan. the 4-year-old panda is now more than 200 pounds and all grown up. his name means butter stick in chinese. when he was born he was about the size of a stick of butter. so across the washington area, people have come to love and know the black eyed boy panda cub. they watched him on panda cam and became an attraction. he was supposed to good home after he turned 2 years old but the national zoo got a two-year extension. now that time is up too and tai shan must be returned to china for breeding. we've always known th

here in washington, d.c.'s lease is almost up and he'll be going to china. >> we'll check in with sherry ly now. the news is not a total surprise. a lot of us didn't want to think this day would happen. we've been putting it off. >> it is one of those sad things. you may not like it, but that was always the deal, that tai shan go back to china. and the zoo got to keep him far longer that he we were supposed to. tai shan is for man 200 pounds, and his name means butter stick in chinese. he was supposed to go home when he turned 2 years old. but the zoo negotiated a two- year extension and now that time is up too. from the time he was born, he quickly became the most popular attraction, drawing millions of visitors who watched him grow up. he's been on magazine covers and zoo merchandise and even has a fan club. his parents are here under a 10 year, $10 million deal and are scheduled to go back next year. it has failed to reduce another off spring eight different times. tai shan will be returned for breeding. five other panda cubs were born in the 1980s to a different pair of pandas
