decades. rose pak was born in china but she burst onto the san francisco scene first is a reporter and then as a community activist. she helped many immigrants resettle and was known as the godmother who work to bring better living conditions and help people get to the polls to gain political power. friends and family gathered yesterday near rose pak's way to honor the namesake of the street. she was discovered deceased yesterday morning at the age of 68. she had heart problems and had recently we feet -- received a transplanted candy over seas. city leaders manner at the airport when she returned in may , the testament to her power in city hall. >> she was of -- she was a friend and enemy of the mayors and board of supervisors. at the end of the day she was a lovely person and i will miss her. >>> the sunday afternoon a small crowd held up blankets and umbrellas to shield the view as rose pak's body was removed from her home. city hall is fine flags at half staff in funeral being planned for saturday morning at old st. mary's concede -- cathedral on california. in the newsroom, an

, cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger. okay, jill. well, the market in china has been up big time recently and now the big sell-off. what's behind the climb and how come the descent? >> reporter: you know, chinese stocks started that massive move higher after the government urged small investors to enter the market last year. they even allowed the use of borrowed money to purchase stocks. at its height in june the shanghai index was up over, get this, 150% from the prior year. okay. then regulators got nervous. they step in they try to prick the bubble. that prompted a more than 30% drop over the first couple of weeks of july. then the government stepped in again because they are worried that oh, my gosh it's too bill a meltdown. they conducted a big intervention. the market recovered. but the actions not enough to prevent yesterday's rout. this morning, the index was down another 5%, climbs back up closed down about 1.7%. so the main index now off about 30% from its high in june. but you know what? it's still up over 70% why a year ago. >> how's the sell-off affecting u.s. i
