safely on her way to china. bao bao will fly out of dulles with her keeper and a handler. her flight will be about 16 hours nonstop. keepers say they'll have a lot of good snacks for that long trip. today panda lovers swarmed the zoo hoping for one last look. >> we came here from jersey last night to come see bao bao. >> i like seeing her on tv, and commercials about them, and when they play around. >> the hope for bao bao is that she'll become a mother in a couple of years. the national zoo also hopes her parents will conceive another cub here as soon as this summer. >>> washington's obseio pandas dates all the way back to the '70s, which china gave the american people a pair of giant pandas as a gift. they arrived stateside in 1972 but they never had a cub that survived more than a few days. nearly three decades passed before bao bao's parents came to the u.s. they're really the ones who grew dc's panda population. in 2005, their first surviving cub went to china to participant in their breeding program. in 2013, bao bao was born. bei bei was born two years later. bei bei will stay

plane. the plane should have been in vietnamese airspace at that point in the flight. china says the flight never entered its space. chinese tv says there are no reports of a crash in chinese waters. but search and rescue teams are launching at this hour. malaysia airlines tells nbc news that its thoughts and prayers are with all the affected passengers and crewmembers and their families members. all told they represent 14 different nationalities. four americans, a malaysia airlines 777 disappear thoing o this flight the red-eye flight saturday morning. rescue teams launching. this would be the second fatal crash involving a 777 in just the last year. we had the 777 crash involving an asian that flight at san francisco last july. investigators belief that was most likely the result of pilot error. we still don't know what happened to this flight, missing out of malaysia. i'm tom costello, back to you you guys. >> as tom said, the boeing 777 is the same type of plane that crashed in san francisco last july, but it's also considered one of the safest planes in the sky. aviation experts
