the senkaku islands in the east china sea. the china/japan friendship association planned the event for this thursday. but the organizers said they wanted to postpone the ceremony for awhile. embassy officials sburinterpret that to mean it was canceled. the japanese government had ruined the atmosphere for the anniversary, the chinese say. china's leaders claimed the islands are chinese territory. chinese officials say former foreign minister and other leaders will still meet with japanese members of the association. the state-run xinhua news agency quoted saying that china remains committed to promoting friendship with japan. a senior japanese embassy official said that chinese want to use the proper meetings to reiterate their position and to urge the japanese to compromise. a japanese government source said the chinese government apparently needs to take a hard line stance. he said chinese leaders are trying to boost public support. the source said it's essential that both sides keep talking. japanese officials are trying to arrange a meeting this woke between foreign minister ge

survey vessels in japan's exclusive economic zone in the east china sea. the two countries are supposed to give prior notice before carrying out surveys in each other's zones. but the chinese side has been ignoring the agreement and continuing its activities. the coast guard used to spot the ships only a few times a year, but recently they're being seen every month. seven cases have been reported since july. the coast guard says it receives notification from china, but many of the vessels are in areas other than those specified. it says the chinese ships insist they're conducting legitimate research, when they reply to warnings from surveillance vessels or planes, but some ships do not respond to the calls. the coast guard adds that more chinese fisheries surveillance vessels are being spotted near the senkaku islands in okinawa prefecture, following the collision incidents in september last year. >> translator: china wants to investigate the seabed and natural resources in the east china sea, partly for military purposes. by entering the zone many times, they are aiming to pro

strong yen, and also weaker than expected data out of china. but having a look at the currency levels this monday morning in japan, and we can see the dollar yen holding pretty steady at the upper 77 levels and euro yen, 103.33 to 39. holding even keeled. as we mentioned, there are going to be some key data out of the u.s. this week, covering the housing, manufacturing, and the all important jobs numbers which are due out friday. those three sectors are three of the most keenly watched by economists, housing manufacturing jobs out of the u.s., and economists want to see if there are signs of optimism for 2012 for the world's biggest economy. recent data, including retail sales tracking shopping over the weekend in the u.s. seemed to show also positive trends. still, while the u.s. figures look a little -- market players are concerned about europe, there are key bond auctions this week in italy, spain, belgium, those will be keenly watched as well. another point of interest, we have the governor of the bank of france in japan and later today in tokyo, he's going to be giving a s

stretched from right now western japan back through southeastern china, and along this front we will see low pressure systems developing and moving from west to east over the next couple days. so it is going to be a little unstable as we head into the middle of the week as well. snow showers, rain showers also for southern parts of the korean peninsula and also back into southeastern china. here it could get a little heavier as we head into tuesday. a few snow showers dash across the northeast china but dry across mongolia. down to the south, indochina is also having a clear start to the week, but the philippines see heavy showers particularly to the north and towards the sout. this will ease off into tuesday morning. by tuesday night, another round of precipitation is likely. here are temperatures. monday we expect 8 degrees for the high in tokyo. and seasonal averages in beijing and seoul, both at 5 degrees. and not bad back into the double digits in shanghai. 11 degrees forecast for the high. warm day in tie pay at 24. heading to north america, we have a couple of winter storm systems

catherine kobayashi. millions of people from the u.s. to china made sure they were in the right place at the right time over the past hour. they used telescopes, protective glasses or pinhole camera to watch a rare celestial phenomenon. an annular solar eclipse. these are images of the eclipse played back at 260 speed. it began in much of japan around 7:30 a.m. it lasted from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on where viewers were. an annular solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and earth are in perfect alignment. the moon appears smaller than the sun so a bright ring forms around the moon. people living in these parts of the planet were able to see the ellipse and for the first time in history, the majority of residents in japan had the opportunity to watch this phenomenon. clouds obscured the view in some areas so some people had to struggle to see the ring. very beautiful, indeed. >>> a group of chinese tourists visited fukushima prefecture on sunday. it's the first time that such a group has visited the area since last year's march disaster. a shanghai-based chinese travel com
