expensive for a slow-growing economy. this is all sparked by fears about china's economy and for the second day in a row, stocks there were pummeled. let's bring in "new york times" correspondent and msnbc contributor josh barrow. also, chief international economist and managing director at mesereau financial. josh, let's start with you. while we have about 30-something minutes before the opening bell, what are we expecting and what is the possibility of a strong start about? >> even when the markets close, market futures close all over the world. you can look at how the dow is doing. what we're seeing is it's way up. the s&p 500, there nasdaq, are up. and we have seen markets all over the world. they're down in china, but almost everywhere else, they're up. the french stock market is up 4.5% today. it's the best day for stocks since 2011. when stocks are being moved by big global effects lie the troubles in china, there markets around the world tend to move in the same direction. the fact it's been such a good day in europe is a good sign it's likely to be a good day in the u.s. >>

china and negotiate with that country? why is it that of all the countries in the world that the united states has relations with you think that having a relationship with cuba is somehow worse than china, russia, soviet union or any other country? >> well i do agree that the human rights violations throughout the world are egregious, and that should not be forgiven. and i am not a china apologist, but one can make the case that what goes on in china is a two-system type of policy. they have economic freedom while they have political repression. but there are many u.s. businesses that are doing business independently of the regime in china. i'm not advocating for that. we should have solidarity with enslaved people and repressed people and we've gotten the international community to say south africa for example, during their apparent time of apartheid, we're not going to do business with you. perhaps if we had more solidarity for oeppressed people, we should have more freedom throughout the world. but we should not be advocateing for a communist regime to have u.s. dollars so close to o

the u.s. markets, they may be responding to the weakness in china which we've seen over the last three weeks. the chinese government has pulled out the stops to halt a 30% decline, and it's not working. last night they froze trading in 20% of all the stocks that trade in china to keep the market from going down further, and it fell. some of the pressure we're seeing in the u.s. today is the uncertainty of the outcome of this greek negotiation, some and maybe even more is the worry about china not only declining so precipitously but maybe even falling further from here. >> interesting to see the backlash from that part of it too. let's talk about the situation in greece and how bad it really is. we know, we've seen the lines at the atms. i talked to you yesterday about prices of olives and olive oil going up here too, and the comparisons to the 1930s depression here. how bad is it really for the average greek? >> for the average greek, they are seeing numbers that are equal to or worse than we saw in 1932 at the depths of our depression when the unemployment rate was 25% across th

recruitment system to develop that. china does. it was clear this could have happened outside north korea, but with north korea involved it is not clear there weren't insiders within sony that helped the north koreans if they were in fact involved so there's some dispute over whether it is north korea, but officials are telling us and my colleague pete williams principally that it was north korea. then the question is what to do about it. a lot of reluctance to be up front about this in a really public way as the u.s. government among some of the obama administration officials because then they have to say what they would do. how to respond is not clear. how do we know it is north korea? we don't want to indicate how we did the same kind of cyber investigating to find out what they were up to. clearly we're doing the same to them that they do to us. and also if we do accuse them we have to take some actions, and the japanese allies are very concerned, sony is an iconic japanese name. that company headquartered there. and the last thing japan does is want to mess up delicate negotiat

maker and personnel from china arrived over an hour ago. we assume the investigation has begun but we haven't been given confirmation of that. as you know, we know the aircraft part in here is from a boeing 777. the experts will try to answer two other questions, is it from mh 370 and can it tell us anything about why and how and where that plane crashed? the first one of those questions is the easier one to answer. they'll be looking at paint and they'll be looking for a serial number on that wing flap. we know there was one number on the wing flap 657 bb but that identified as a part from a boeing 777. they'll look for any other serial numbers or paint that could identify it. each airline uses its own specific paint and numbers. so can we pin this to malaysian airlines? the second big question much much harder to work out, they'll be using a machine that can magnify up to 100,000 times to look at the damage on that aircraft part to see if there are rips and tears that might indicate the speed that was going out and that might tell us is the fuselage largely intact or did the whole t

greece. also disappointing economic data from china. we've watched that. it's the world's second largest economy. yes, you've got the greek debt negotiations. they're actually causing a lot of headaches here in the united states as well. the bottom line is not getting into too many wonky, messy details about the negotiations but if things don't work out, and greece leaves the eurozone the question is who's going to be next? will it be portugal? italy? that certainly is one of the concerns for our markets. also sort of just changing gears a little. have you noticed what's happening at the pump? the low gas prices they were great while they lasted but the average price of a regular gallon of gas jumped 13 cents in the past two weeks to $2.20. that's, of course the average. then that record-long sort of sustained drop every day. we saw a decline in gas prices. now they are ticking back up. >> what happened mandy? >> crude prices are ticking back up. back above $50. i think around $52 and change right now. so of course last week you might remember a number of people were coming on saying may

china to make sure they're taking the steps they can to be an engine of growth for the global economy that would help not just the whole world. it would help our exports, our economy, and our manufacturing sector in particular. >> yeah, jason, let's talk about china. a lot of folks may say, what does what is going on have such a direct, immediately impact on us and our economy? >> there's two strategies for china to grow. one is to expand consumer spending and its domestic economy. another is to try to export more and more and more. the problem with that second strategy for china is it runs eni into a ceiling that can't work forever. the problem for us is that it can mean through the exchange rate, through other mechanisms we're not competing on a level playing field. that's why the secretary of the treasury said he was going to hold china accountable for the promises it's made about transparency, about moving the markets, having a level playing field. i think if they did that, if they took the right macroeconomic steps, it would be good for china and good for the united states. that'

news out of china hundreds are still trapped inside a chinese cruise ship. take a look at these pictures. one survivor says quote, it capsized within a minute. the ship flipped over on the yangtze river overnight. five confirmed dead 14 rescued. bill neely joins me with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. it's not clear, this is china's worst passenger ship disaster in almost 70 years, more than 400 people are still missing. relatives, of course distraught, and they're asking how did this ship sink but also how come the captain left the ship and survived? >> reporter: the search for survivors is a desperate one, rescuers hammering on the overturned hull to try to make contact with passengers still trapped inside. but time is running out on the yangtze river, where the ship, and with more than 450 on board, sank in rough weather. some people have been rescued. this 65-year-old woman was pulled out by divers. a few managed to swim ashore. but after a day of searching, hope is fading for so many more on the eastern star which was carrying 406 chinese tourists, 5 guides, and

seems this we're seeing here in the u.s. was triggered by some actions overseas starting in china, where some new rules were introduced to allow short selling in the chinese markets. the chinese market has been trading recently at a seven-year high so that raised worry. you can see short selling undercut that rally and the markets pulled back. so that triggered some sellouts in china. it's spread to the european markets, as well and, of course there there are concerns over whether or not greece will default on its debt so that's putting pressure on the european markets and leading to u.s. trading, as you can see right now, the dow is off 252 points. here in the u.s. we had some mixed earnings news. we did get decent numbers out of ge and it is bucking the downward trend fractionally higher, but overall, a down session on wall street today. back to you. >> mary thompson thank you so much. >>> developing now, the kickoff to the 2016 season under way in new hampshire. right now they are gathering for the republican leadership summit in nashville. take a look at these speakers today,
