this week, trading has been halted in china's stock markets, after a steep sell-off. it fell 7% in the first 13 minutes of trading. then circuit breakers kicked in, and trading was halting for the day. that sent shock waves to markets in japan, and south korea. u.s. markets also got hammered today. the dow fell 250 points. nasdaq dropped 55, and the s & p lost 26. macy's says it is cutting about 3,000 jobs after disappointing holiday sales, and it is moving forward with the closing of 36 stores this spring. none of the macy's stores in the bay area will be affected. the retail giant says the move will cut expenses and save about $400 million a year. >>> tonight's powerball jackpot topped $500 million. just within the past hour, we've learned there are no winners tonight. heather holmes here now with the numbers and what's next. >> reporter: get your tickets out folks. 2, 11, 47, 62, 63, and the powerball number of 17. yeah, i'll be showing up for work tomorrow. i'm not a winner either. with more than $500 million up for grabs, a lot of people certainly hoping to start off 2016 with a b

starting to be pushed out. this couple from china lives in one small room. mrs. hughes says she and her husband immigrated to the united states eight years ago hoping for a better life. since they arrived, the couple has lived in this six by 10 room. so tiny i had to stand in the doorway to speak with them. still, the couple says it's better than their life in china where he was a farmer. historians tell us chinatown rose from the ashes after the 1906 earthquake to become a major tourist attraction and commerce hub, she says the many immigrants who live here are vital to the existence of this historic area. advocates say the increasing lofts could push this vulnerable population out of san francisco or worse yet, cause them to become homeless. >> sro rents are going through the roof. >> reporter: they make up to 45% of housing in chinatown. the nonprofit chinatown community development center surveyed tenants in single room occupancy hotels. they found in 2013, the average rent for a room in an sro was about $600. by 2015, it went up to almost $1000 a month. an increase of 60% in two ye
